Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Farmhouse Classic is one of the first beers we ever brewed, and a popular one at that. A golden Belgian ale fermented with a traditional Saison yeast strain and Brettanomyces. This ale is very refreshing, perfectly balanced, and full of flavour despite its light appearance. With this specific version we opted for authenticity, and as many Belgian breweries do, we bottle conditioned the final product, producing a lively effervescence. The resulting brew is really something special.

Enjoyed on tap at the brewpub. Very much in the style although not exceptional, I enjoyed the corriander punch. Pale yellow and lots of lace. Mild funk and lots of leather in the aroma. Smooth mouthfeel. Yeasty, easy drinking. Not complex spicyness so farmhouse more than saison in my book. A bit better in the bottle, aged a bit.

500ml bottle, the 2017 vintage (@6.2% ABV) - always nice to see more Bellwoods come out West, even if they brought Brett along for the ride.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, pale golden yellow colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and fizzy off-white head, which leaves a bit of low-lying sudsy island profile lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.

It smells of musty barnyard funk, grainy and gritty pale malt, a lesser wheat cracker thing, a sense of muddled tropical fruitiness, rainbow peppercorn dust, and a mild leafy, grassy, and herbal green hoppiness. The taste is bready and crackery pale malt, damp wheat cereal, a more restrained dry funkiness than that in the nose, still mixed-up exotic fruity notes, ethereal earthy spice, and more understated herbal, floral, and wet grassy hop bitterness.

The carbonation is quite active in its palate-coating frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and yeah, not all that smooth, not with HIM lurking about. It finishes trending dry, the funk and compliant graininess calling the shots.

Overall - well, they really dove deep into the funk pool here, it would seem. Not overly offensive, but it is indeed there every step of the way. I wish I could say that I am coming around to beers made in this manner, especially from a brewery like this, but, nah.

Bottle: Poured a hazy light yellow color ale with a super large white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of floral and light grassy notes with deep rustic malt flavours. Taste is also dominated by deep rustic malt flavours with limited sweetness and some grainy notes. Light dry and floral hoppy notes are also discernable. Body is quite full with limited filtration and good carbonation. Well brewed done maybe a tad too much grainy malt notes for my liking.

On tap at C'est What in Toronto, ON.

This one pours a lightly hazy yellow, with a solid fluffy head, and a good amount of lacing.

This smells like a sharp, bitter, and herbal strain of Brett was used, as this smells dry, dry, dry- there's blades of grass, there's lemon rind, there's clove, and spicy herbal aromas.

This is pretty cool. I dig how dry it is- it's basically bone dry, with bitter lemongrass or crabgrass type flavors, pear, lemon, and lots of very floral type flavors. It's simple, pleasant, and reminds me of some vague countryside I haven't been to yet.

This is light bodied, and quite crisp, with a good level of carbonation, billowy and pillowy.

Bellwoods is bae.

On tap at the brewery, into a tulip.

Opaque orange with huge lacing and a good bit of lacing. Nose is a bit stinky (can't quite pin it down), funky, wheat, lemon citrus and some drying character. Taste has wheat, drying grain flavours, pepper, pale malts and some citrus. Heavier medium body that I appreciate in the style, and higher medium carbonation. Something I'd definitely revisit.

Called "Farmhouse Saison" on my bottle and listed at 6.5% ABV.
Bottle conditioned 750 bottle poured in to tulip.

A - Slight gush before the pour. Poured a slightly cloudy pale straw yellow. Despite a slow pour, half of the glass filled with thick bright white head; good retention.

S - Yeast esters and clove up front. Some fruitiness, lemon, bready malts and spice.

T - Dryness up front accompanies Belgian yeast and clove flavours up front. Mid-palate adds sweet bready malts and lemon. The finish is peppery spice.

M - Medium body. Dry. Moderate carbonation.

2017 version at 6.2%.

Pours a nice head, which just keeps going. Nice carbonation.

There's some Brett character, but I'm not loving this funk, it's a bit sweaty and goaty. There is some tropical fruit and leather too.

It's alright, but I was hoping for more.

Brett Saison. So much funk! Tons of Brett funk up front, honey, horse blanket, white peach and wheat. Medium bodied. Nice level of carb, although it's on the lower end. Lower sweetness. Funky and complex.

Farmhouse Classic has indeed that classic farmhouse ale look: bright golden with a great big pillow of cottony white head. Bubbles are live and well. Once condensation settles on the glass it really starts to resemble the ideal accompaniment to a nice spring afternoon.

A fragrant bouquet of white pepper, lemon zest, rose petal and grapefruit are the olfactory equivalent of being waken up by a bright morning sun. They are eye-opening literally (and eyebrow raising). It smells like an enchanted garden of some kind. Serving it in too a small a glass should be considered a crime.

Farmhouse Classic is a beer to be tasted as much as smelled. It is a product of what Belgian yeast can accomplish when left to its own devices: apple, pear, roses, grass clippings, white pepper, sage and lemon. The taste is ethereal and perfumed, roped together by a crisp maltiness flavoured like a warm loaf of honey-oat bread.

Coriander spice and orange zest billow in on the finish like surging rain clouds. They shade in much of the aftertaste, leaving some room also for a dry, almost straw-like grassiness. The beer tastes about the 6.5% alcohol it is - stronger than the typical beer its colour but not so strong as to affect drinkability much - and continues to hold shape even once warming.

Some beer styles require a detailed knowledge of its history, ingredients or brewing methods, without which true appreciation of the beer is unintelligible. Not saisons! You know these perfumed and peppered, fruity and floral ales are summer classics. They are instantly impressive and irresistible to even novice palates and Bellwoods' is no exception.

500ml bottle poured into tulip 2/6/14 cheers liamt07 for sending me a bottle

A hazed golden orange with enough clarity to see bubbles going up the center and I quickly end up with half a glass of soapy foam, good retention ending up as a thick film that leaves random lace

S peppery farmhouse yeast, a hint of citrus, lots of cereals, some bubblegum, not quite funk but I'm liking the yeasty notes, smells strong

T some orange marmalade, added to what I smell, wheat and spice with lots of yeast, tastes like a Saison

M a little foamy but the style often is, lighter side of medium, very faint booze on the way down, leaves the palate slick, spicy finish

O this one didn't last long and you could get your ass kicked smashing this one on a hot sunny day, one of those beers I'd like to try at different ages

Bellwoods continues to impress me, I've had few styles from them now and all have been solid. I'd trade Bellwoods for pretty much any of my hometown breweries and I doubt I'd regret it.

Thanks Liamt07!

Overall. Very nice stuff and indeed "classic".

On tap at Grand Electric.

Beer is a cloudy blonde/golden, with a nice white head and lots of lacing.

Smells quite dry, with a bit of funk. Some floral notes and muted fruit scents.

Taste, like the nose, is quite dry. Some funk, yeast and a lemon flavour, along with some spices and other light fruit.

Highly carbonated with a medium body.

Overall, very nice. Enjoyed two of these and look forward to having more of them.

Purchased directly at the brewery.

Bit of a peppery flavor, very refreshing with some citrus. Awesome lacing with huge, billowy head atop a light gold body. An excellent saison.

Hazy bright blonde colour, one finger of dense white head, good amount of lace left behind. Smell is lemony and yeasty, some other citrus notes come across as well, spicy with some clove like scents as well, corriander, some tangy almost funky yeast scents. Taste is yeasty and quite dry, orange and lemon flavours mixed with some spicy notes, ever so subtle hop bitterness, long drying finish. Medium-high dry carbonation, medium body. Nice drinking saison that I thought was a bit too dry for me at first but halfway through came to the conclusion that this is quite well put together, good stuff here.
