Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
At the time of its inception, this was a very unique beer for Bellwoods to brew. Though we were earning a reputation for making a lot of high ABV, full-flavoured brews, we still couldn’t deny the appeal of something easy drinking and sessionable. Not really wanting to go the route of the lager, and inspired by the hop-forward low alcohol pale ales emerging from the states, we devised the Wizard Wolf. Weighing in at 4.8% this deceivingly flavourful session ale is easy to drink, and doesn’t knock you off your feet after just one.

This was quit an enjoyable session IPA. I'm not typically a "session" drinker because I prefer the fuller taste of IPAs & DIPAs, but right away the smell of this one after opening the bottle was impressive. A ton of grapefruit and lemon dominate the aroma. Poured, it is a beautiful nice cloudy light straw colour, but the head is smaller, more active, and dissipates more quickly than I'd expect. Lacing is non-existent. Taste follows the aroma with a solid hit of grapefruit dominating up front with milder pine, flower & bready malt notes as the sip fades. Well balanced, virtually no astringent bitterness as the sip ends. Mouthfeel is just a touch more watery than I'd like and the carbonation a little "lighter' / more active than I'd prefer. All in all, quite a nice Session IPA with enough flavour to be enjoyable for a hop head.

Bottle purchased at Bellwoods Brewery in Toronto, ON.

This one pours a mostly clear dull orange, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

Smells a bit like Zombie Dust, actually- there might be some Citra here for sure. There's grapefruit, orange peel, melon, and pineapple, with lots of grassy hops on the nose as well.

This is certainy one of the better tasting session IPAs out there. It does suffer from tasting a smidge watery, but there's a really nice crisp and clean hop flavor to it- like a less bold Zombie Dust. All of the fruits mentioned above are here, with a nice moderate grassy bitterness on the finish.

There's a pretty crisp but slightly empty mouthfeel here, as it gets a bit watery. It's super drinkable, though.

This isn't my absolute favorite Bellwoods, but it's still well constructed for sure.

Tastes like a lemon drop, refreshing and sessionable. Tad over carbonated.

Serving: Bottle
No date (for shame....)

Pours an almost-clear straw with two-ish fingers of puffy white head that ends up as a patchy film. Little lasting lacing (say that three times fast), but a little. Aroma is bright, juicy fruit. Orange, mango, lemon zest, guava, with some stanky, green hop funk underneath. Flat, dry, bitter taste with a slight aromatic tint of lemon rind and juniper at the end. It is light bodied with active carbonation, dry; faintly resinous finish with a lingering tingle.

Really good beer. Solid example of the style, a little pop to it, drinkable. Light enough to be an easy-drinker with a big hop profile, fruity but some spicy forest character as well and a slight cracker malt middle. Very good, drinkable, thirst-quenching, sessionable APA. I see on the picture that at one point this was called a "session" beer. Honestly, if it was still labeled that I would have maybe bumped it up a notch on the overall score. It is very substantial and "beer-like" compared to most session beers I have tried; nonetheless, it would need to be still more substantial to be a really great APA in my eyes, but now I'm just splitting hairs.

Hope to have it again.

The last of the bottles purchased from Bucky’s first foray into Bellwoods’ retail store, Wizard Wolf Pale Ale came in Bellwoods’ standard brown 500 ml bottle. The beer was 4.8% alcohol by volume with no production or ‘best before’ date, but with a warning to “drink fresh, do not age” on the label.

The first glass of Wizard Wolf poured a relatively clear golden colour with plenty of visible carbonation bubbles, but there had obviously been some settling going on because the beer from the bottom of the bottle was very cloudy. Pouring produced about 1” of white head that faded to a collar and film after roughly 3 minutes, with these remnants leaving a continuous sheet of lacing down the glass. Its aroma was mainly grapefruit, but with notes of light malt and pine. The taste included all of the elements in the aroma plus a bonus of tangerine and lemon, and although the bitter grapefruit still dominated, there was a respectable balance between the bitter and sweet that held the grapefruit in check. The grapefruit bitterness lingered for a while as an aftertaste, but was neither unpleasant nor overwhelming. Wizard Wolf had a dry mouthfeel with a body on the light side of light-medium, and a suitably active carbonation. Wish I could remember what I paid for this beer, but alas the bill was not itemized. Overall I prefer Bellwoods’ Boogie Monster, but Wizard Wolf is refreshing and worth a try.
