Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 7.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
A special edition of our classic Farmhouse Saison, this version is aged in Brett barrels for 4-6 months. Because we're such a micro operation, each batch of Farmageddon varies slightly, reflecting the small blends we do, never combining more than 8-10 barrels. In some barrels we use more Brett Brux, in others Brett Lambicus. If this all sounds confusing, fear not — all you need to know is that the refined, effervescent beer that hibernates in these bottles is a dynamic labour of love, changing and improving with time.

Overall okay beer, nothing too special, minimal hop flavours, taste like an orval that has been aged for six months, almost no sour beer taste (which makes this rather bland), drinkable I guess

The body is a rich apricot yellow that looks like the flesh of the fruit with its haziness. Its carbonation looks very active, giving the finger's worth of meringue-like paper white head some serious staying power. A very nice looking Saison.

A dry breadiness with twists of tart lemon peel and green apple is what I get first. I think the Brett manifests itself in this tart fruity quality because I'm not getting much funk. It's got that chalkiness that I get in a lot of Saisons which fleshes out the nose. There's some phenols in there as well, being a little perfumy and medicinal with a few drops of honey that give it some sweetness. This leans to being more subtle than pronounced but a good smelling beer nonetheless.

The Brett is more upfront in the taste, imparting a tart dryness across the palate. There's a flash of green grape skins but that quickly changes to a more astringent quality. A medicinal sweetness comes right after. Pricks of bread and honey peak through. The finish is dry with its candied medicinal quality capping things off. As it warms, I find its dryness a bit off-putting, cutting through the flavours near the finish. Its alcohol content shows itself only in the warming quality it gives off.

The weight of the body is great being medium bodied, creamy, and round. If it wasn't for that cutting dryness, I would have found this to be more drinkable.

Bellwoods had a good take on this style and they ended up with a good Saison but nothing more. I didn't get any barrel quality and its dryness paired with the medicinal character took away from the enjoyment for me. I love what they're doing down at Bellwoods but for the price, I wouldn't buy this again.

Purchased at the brewery bottle shop for around $8.00 for a peel me out of 4oz's 500ml bottle instead of a regular 650ml bottle at 6deg C in a tulip glass. Batch #9 bottled on November 2015. Says 6.5% alcohol on the label

A- Opens well and pours a 1" high white head that is gone in seconds. Very light gold colour and unfiltered.

S- Lots of brett here.

T- Missing so much flavor. Lots of brett but little else. Has a hint of a lot of good things going for it but nothing great. Orval is a better brew from this respect. Other than the heavy brett this has little else going for it. Might just be my preferences but it's thin and weak on flavor.

M- VERY watery

O- Not my cup of tea. It's a fraction of an Orval but still ok. Will not buy again unless some body and depth comes into this brew. Really disliking the 500ml bottle format. It's just an excuse to make more profit. At 500ml this brew is worth $6.00 max. I'd only pay $4.00 if I had to buy it again.

Food Pairing

This ok brew went well with...... Spicy tuna roll sushi! The soy sauce just opens this one up. A touch of salt worked to bring this brew a little more palatable.

Enjoy

Thanks to Frank for the share.

Golden-straw color, moderately hazy, with a finger or so of fluffy white head, decent retention and lacing. Aroma of fruity esters and light barnyard funk, notes of pepper/clove spice and bready malts. The taste reflected the aroma, bringing a good, basic saison to the palate, peach and pear, grape, clove, wet hay, light bretty funk, with a solid bready malt malt lending a light sweetness. Light-medium body, easy drinkability. Nothing too memorable, but good overall.

December 2015 release.

Huge fluffy white head. Flavor is very smooth with Brett and also some pears are noticeable. It's good but lacked a some of the saison flavors i like.

Batch 11 from 2016.

Rusty yellow, no head.

Aroma is slightly tart and funky, but it comes through a lot more in the flavour.

Fairly dry, not too acidic, could use more bubbles.

Pours a cloudy pale straw with a Brobdingnagian, bubbly head that lasts forever and drapes the glass in foam. Cidery tartness in the nose. Tartness and soft lemony brett notes mix with some Saccharomyces saison esters and a leafy, citrusy hop character in the taste. With warmth brett funk and some cheese shows in the back. The mouthfeel is medium to light bodied with a brisk carbonation. Apple cider tartness, spicy hops and a balancing dough maltiness linger in the finish.

This is a decent brett 'infused' Saison, but lacks brett flavor complexity and has a bit too much tartness, not sourness by any means, but an apple cider acidity. Still its a good beer worth trying. I'll try it again, it didn't meet my expectations this time around.

Thanks to TheSevenDuffs for the bottle dated Oct 10 2014

Less Brett than I was expecting with a muted noise and mouth. Interestingly we picked up notes of fennel or anise that we were not expecting.

Good, but not an excellent saison.

Batch #10 from Dec 18 2015 release. Hints of lemon, grass, and apricot. Refreshing taste. Extremely complex and a really interesting beer. Stands up to some of the NW/PDX farmhouse leaders.
