[Original rating 2014-08-15] Bottle. Pours clear reddish brown with a small tan head. Aroma is pretty weak but I get a little toffee, earth, bread. Taste is sweet malt, a little peat if I use my imagination. Sweet caramel in the finish. A decent Scottish ale.

From notes taken 01/22/17:

Mostly clear ruby to look at, with some hues of orange or copper. Rocky head, a toasty shade of tan, of good retention, light and fluffy at first but densifies as it dissipates. Smells of molasses, brown sugar, a musty tartness, toast, some alcohol. Fairly sweet to taste, starting at plumbs and apples and berries, ending more towards toffee and maple sap and oak. Toasty in the background, semi-dry and peaty around the edges and in finish. Good flavor and balance. Each first sip after a few minutes is more bitter, while subsequent sips are sweeter as palate is saturated. Medium-bodied, sloshy, not quite syrupy, with fine and delicate but tingly carbonation. Mildly astringent.

Poured into a pint glass at 47 degrees. A hard pour produced a pathetic white head that has absolutely no retention. The color of the beer is a deep rust color with mahogany hues. The clarity of the beer is slightly opaque.

The nose has toasted malt caramel, oranges, some smoke and a light fruitiness.

The beer is not as strong as a scotch ale as I have tried. Some smoke, caramel, oranges, fruity note, toasted male, grainy, and some peat.

The mouthfeel is dry and slightly carbonated.

This is an average beer, the flavor are there for a scottish ale, but they seem muted, would have to like to seen more flavor and a chewier body.

Smoke, Marmalade, Smooth, Creamy

Think of this brew as a Scotch Ale with half strength, the body is there and so is a subtle smokiness. Fresh grass, faint caramel, & toasted bread come to mind. Incredibly smooth with a tiny bubbled lace that shows off some great stickage. Hint of orange peel, more toasty grain, & lingering peat in the finish. Three to four sips in and it starts to really grow on us.

Appearance: Pours a clear mahogany with a respectable head; quite a smattering of lace

Smell: Toffee and peat

Taste: A balance between the toffee and peat, up front, with the dryer peaty flavors moving to the forefront in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A pretty darn decent Scottish Ale; nicely done

Thanks, benkuhns, for the opportunity

Pours an effervescent brown/hazel with 2 fingers of sandy colored head. Great lacing & good head retention

S: Cakey, peaty, not much else

T: Follows the nose, dryness a well, just a kiss of leafy hops as well up front. Cakeyness & peatyness as this warms, some toastyness & toffee as this warms. Finishes cakey with a little bit of peat & leafy hops layered in dryness

MF: Medium bodied, moderate carbonation

Drinks pretty easy, this one of the better takes on the style, most times these seem to remind me of a water down wee heavy, not the case here. More one line with some 80 shilling ales I had in Scotland
