Overall, quite unimpressive for the money ($10.99 six pack) when put up against other offerings in that price range.
Good full aromas of a typical porter, but lacks a lot on the palate. A touch thin with a lack luster finish compared to other beers in the same category and price point.
Someone looking for a dark beer without the overly malty finish will enjoy this, however I will pass on this one next time.

From the 355 ml. bottle marked DRN-05/07/13. Sampled on July 29, 2013.

It pours dark brown with ruby red hues glistening in the light and a long lasting silky tan head.

On the nose I get dark toasted malts, butter, and a low hop presence. Maybe there are a few coffee grinds in the mix.

The body falls into the thin to medium range but creamy.

The taste tends to have a sweeter sensation than the aroma may imply with dark malts and butter in there too. Clean but mellow hop finish.

I do find it ironic that this only gets an "okay" rating on BA even though this has won a few silver medals over the years. I guess it all depends on who they are competing with.

Nearly no head. Quickly settles to rim bubbles only. Interestingly, it does leave a bit of spotty lace. The color is deep, dark brown where a modicum of light passes through.

Smells of chocolate and of milk, but not like chocolate milk. How can that be? Not chalky like some porters.

Lighter body than most porters. This is accentuated by a higher carbonation. Beyond that, the flavor is decent: some chocolate, some vanilla. Short aftertaste. No notable hop or alcohol. The beer is a good introduction to the world of Porters.

Appearance: Pours a jet black from a 12 oz bottle into a standard pint glass. Two fingers of light brown head that disappears quicker than expected.

Smell: Some chocolate and smoke, roasted barley and maybe some dark sweet fruit.

Taste: Sweetness from the malt and a bit of roastiness typical of the style. A little bit of chocolate and coffee but not a ton there.

Mouthfeel: On the light side of porter but still smooth with light carbonation. Goes down easily and not a sipper by any means.

Overall: A pretty solid porter from Wasatch that I just had to try because of the name. At 4%, this is a nice session beer and something I'd try again. Not bad at all.
