Utah Brewers Cooperative

Style: Hefeweizen

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This medium-bodied, American style, unfiltered wheat beer is brewed with a special Alt Bier yeast. That creates subtle citrus flavors that balance perfectly with the aroma and bitterness of Tettnanger hops and the delicate flavor of the malted wheat. Serve Squatters American Wheat with a lemon wedge for a refreshing treat.

The American Wheat Hefeweizen from Squatters was not too shabby. I thought the color was a bit strange...it was a very pale yellow almost like white grapefruit juice color. Very cloudy and had a thin white head. The scent had some banana and slight hints of clove. The taste started real nice, lil sweet, but the finish was a bit grainy. The mouthfeel was very light and refreshing and fairly easy drinking. Worth a taste.

Presentation: 12oz brown bottle with a twist-off cap.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy orange-amber coloured beer with a healthy white creamy foam head. This is an unfiltered beer and contains yeast that you should pour into the glass.

Smell: Clean smelling. Too clean. Some musty aromas, but that's it.

Taste: Smooth with a semi-soda-pop fizz and seltzer/mineral flavour in the background. Light-bodied. Yeast flavour is pronounced. Too pronounced and distracts your tastebuds from other flavours. It's musty and becomes bitty on the palate. Sweetness is almost artificial with a lot of dextrin character, the smallest dose of fruity character and a drop of caramel. Wheat flavours are pretty dominant in the form of tannins. Hops are slightly spicy with a shy amount of lemon flavour. Finish has some dryness, tannins, musty flavours and more fake tasting sweetness -- very unpleasant.

Notes: What a horrible beer. None of the distinct characters that you'd expect from a Hefeweizen. Where's the clove? Banana? Even as an Americanized version ... it still lacks. A very weak and unpalatable beer. Don't bother ...

It sits a slightly hazed oranged yellow under a small ceiling of gray-beige skim.
Some small lemon aromatics, but mostly it smell of wet grain, oatmeal, and musty yeast.
Maltiness hits the tongue with grain and hay, hinting towards banana bread, but falling well short. Apple cores and lemon rinds- also faint and ill-defined- come into play as it settles into a misty, characterless, floury yeastiness. Hops add some dryness late, but bring little flavor into the fold.
Thin and generally lifeless in the mouth. The yeast fails to bolster the already flaccid feel.
It's by no mean offensive, and gulpable if you're thirsty, but much more an American Wheat than a true hefeweizen. And on the bland and weak side even by those standards and factoring in the Utah ABV cap.

Some Squatter's beers aren't bad for being only 4% abv, but this one doesn't make th cut. There are both wheat malt flavors and fruity/spicy yeast character, but everything seems watered down and it all comes out as an almost unpleasant mess. As in, there's a pleasant flavors, but they're not mixing right. Send this one back to the drawing board.

Cloudy orange with a small white colored head.

Smells semi-sweet with some banana scent. No clove detected.

Starts out with a neutral soda cracker taste. Mineral water and over carbonated feel actually stings a little. Overall it tastes pretty bland.

Mouthfeel is good.

Overall a nearly tasteless beer but I can't say it is offensive.

Pours a hazy golden yellow with a white head that leaves little lacing.

Smell is very faint wheat & fruit

Taste is very bland, slightly sour lemon/banana.

Not a very good representation of the style. Does not have that heffe smell and taste. Pass on this one if you see it.

Had at the brewpub in Salt Lake City. Beer was part of a sample tray. Served from the tap into 4 oz sample glasses.

A-golden hazy body and a white ring head

S-faint fruit smell, nothing else

T-little flavor at all, standard malt and hop balance with some bannana at the end.

D-No thanks. this style screams for something to be done with it. It just seemed flavorless to me.

Acquired via trade from Wasatch, so a big “Thank you” goes out to him.
Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a weizen glass.

A: The beer is a pale gold color with a thin white head that fades quickly and leaves a very thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is full of wheat, grain and some yeast. There are hints of lemon and hops.

T: A very hearty and bready wheat flavor bursts out when you sip it, followed by flavors of banana and lemon. There’s a just a touch of hops and very little sweetness, but still a very flavorful beer.

M: Very crisp and very smooth, light-to-medium body, medium-to-heavy carbonation, finish is dry and very clean.

D: Very tasty, goes down very easily, not filling at all, excellent representation of style, I could stick with this beer for a long time, even though I would prefer a little bit more of a kick. Overall, I thought this was a very good beer.

This was a cloudy yellow beer that looked very much like a wheat beer should. By the time it got to the table, though, there was no head to speak of.

There was almost no aroma... there was a hint of clean wheat wafting through the nose, but that was it.

The taste was of clean very smooth what malt. Highly drinkable. Highly recommended.

"American" and "Hefeweizen" should not really be used in the same sentence, unless you're saying, "I'm an American enjoying a Hefeweizen". It's like Chinese Tacos, or Italian Sushi, or a Corvette with a governor on it. They do not bode well for each other. Now that I'm looking at the scores it's possible I could have left well enough alone and skipped this one, but I'll try to be as open as I can.

The pour is a golden honey amber, with a tall fluffy head. Nice haze in the body, no sediment, 80% opaque. Looking right on, so far.

The aroma is clove and banana, with touches of coriander and spice. Certainly smells like a winner.

...........Where is the flavor??? It tastes like a Miller Lite with a banana hunked in it. There is so much of nothing here that I don't even know what I'm reviewing. Am I reviewing the consistency? It's water. Am I reviewing the smell? It was deceiving! As far as flavor...it's pretty much nothing, but a hint of bread finishes it, which actually adds a micrometer of depth, but not enough to actually boost itself to reach my taste buds...

The feel is water, and then carbonated water.

Overall, what the hell? This is a terrible excuse for a Hefeweizen. It's an okay beer, but label it as an American Light Wheat beer - and yeah, not really a recognized style, but they may have invented it here.

A- Pale hazy gold in color. Minimal white head that disipates to nothing

S- Wheat. A little citrusy.

T- Some wheaty sweetness upfront then finishes with a bitter unpleasantness

M- Thin bodied with a bit too much carbonation

D- Ummm. I reviewed it & hopefully the grass will grow better where the remainder was poured out.

Subtle would be a kind way to describe this. I don't think the word "hefeweizen" can be used around this stuff. It's clearly an American Wheat and a prime example of my lack of respect for that style. Perhaps the most watery wheat beer I've had. So light that it would give Corona a run. If you can get a big enough gulp there is some beery flavor as it goes down. Taste evaporates fast. Slight beeriness in the nose. Quite sharp without any malt to mellow the stuff.

And to think I dissed the Unita Hefeweizen for being anemic. This one is on life support. The label calls this "American Wheat Hefeweizen" and it's a product of the Utah Brewing Cooperative.
