Notes: Welcome to the biggest beer Squatters Pub Brewery has ever made! A Russian Imperial Stout is one of the most intensely flavored beers a brewer can create. The combination of rich roasted barley, oak, molasses and licorice root combine to create an utterly unique and complex imperial stout experience.

We had to mash in twice to get our starting gravity of 27 plato (1.108 specific gravity). We boiled 3.5 hrs to enhance caramelization and used molasses and licorice root at the end of boil. Outer Darkness is aged with oak, has 65 IBUs and bottle conditioned. We hope you have as much fun drinking it as we did making it. Please share with another and drink wisely.

Finally picked up this beer, after walking past it for months, and I was very pleased with this.
Pours a pitch black with copious brown head, resolving with minimal lacing and scant effervescence. Tastes is sweet toasted malts and molasses/caramel with transition to coffee, dark semi sweet chocolate and hints of smoke, leather and some bitter notes leading to a rather clean finish. Mouthfeel is creamy and effervescent, almost full bodied.
Overall, this is a thoroughly enjoyable RIP, reasonably priced. Similar to Clown Shoes Blaecorn Unidragon – I wouldn’t hesitate to pick this stout up again.

Acquired long ago from Wasatch so a big “Thank you” goes out to him. Born on date of 2/22/11, poured from 16.9oz bottle into a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep black color, with a short dark brown head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains strong chocolate, licorice, molasses and roasted malts.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of chocolate, coffee, molasses and licorice. Then a hearty roasted malt character comes in along with a mild alcohol sting. The hops presence is extremely mild as expected for a beer of this style and age. There’s a very good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly bready.

M: Smooth and quite viscous, medium-to-heavy body, light-to-medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Very tasty, goes down dangerously easy, slightly filling, strong kick, very good representation of style, this is a very good big stout to sip on for a long time and it seems to have aged quite nicely.

L: A rich deep opaque mahagony pour with a 1” light tan foam collar. S: Rich fruit with roast and a suspicion of smoke. T: Dark fruit, oily, chocolate, muted prune, and a dark chocolate bitter finish. F: Creamy and chewy with medium low carbonation O: A hefty Russian Imperial Stout with big flavors and alcohol that is easy to savor and enjoy.

From a can at bar in Salt Lake airport.

Pours jet black without a decent head. Pretty nice looking stout

The smell is a tin like nose. Not very appealing. Also get some prune smell upfront.

The taste is just not that great. Kind of like it smells. Metallic taste and almost a bitter cherry taste to go along with it.

The feel isn’t one you’d expect from a stout. It feels more like it carbonated like an ale.

Overall not that that good. Certainly not worth the abv. Would not have this one again.

750 mL bottle tried 18 Oct 2011. Served in the 0.4 L Steiner Pils snifter.

Large brown foamy head. Medium carbonation. Clear dark brown in color. Aromas of ethanol, dried fruit, lightly charred malts. Lots of roasty malt, almost burnt. Alcohol. Some very dark chocolate and cocoa. Burnt wood. Heavy body, lots of alcohol. Licorice and cough syrup in the finish and aftertaste.

It's boozy and hot in the outer darkness.

Appearance: Pours an obsidian black, crowned by a moderate, dense dark tan cloud-top head, which retains quite well. The lacing is quite thick and glass-coating.

Aroma: Strong hop notes, dominate the aroma, as well as earthy, smoky, and black bread notes. Amost all this complexity, there are also sweet alcohol notes, although they are overshadowed by the hops and malt.

Taste: Opens with a strong wave of hops, atop a massive dark malt presence. The malts are wonderfully complex, offering up charcoal, dark bread, bitter cocoa, coffee, earth, and smoke. The hop presence plays a supporting role, although superbly well, with the moderate presence providing a graceful balance to the stunning palate conjured up by the malts. Beneath all this, there is sweet, slightly vinous alcohol, although it is subtle and graceful. Finishes with lingering notes of charcoal and herbal hops.

Mouth feel: Smooth, soft and velvety.

Drinkability/notes: Very well-done, graceful and superbly complex without being over-the-top. Recommended.

Presentation: Packaged in a custom twenty-two ounce brown glass bomber with a pop-off crown, served in a Belgian chalice.

From a twelve ounce can, this brew is utterly black. The head is tan and soapy. The aroma is intense...smokey, coffee, licorice, The taste is balanced slightly sweet, with roasted malt and spicy hops. Alcohol warming. The body is exceptionally thick and luxurious. Excellent beer.
