Poured from a brown 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a dark brown color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of dark fruits, malts. Taste is the same as the aroma, some citrus and alcohol are present. Feels medium/full bodied in the mouth and overall is an enjoyable beer.

Look: It pours dark copper with a tan head. Head retention is moderate.

Smell: It has strong malty aromas feature caramel. There are some floral and pine hops with a bit of citrus in the background.

Taste: It has strong caramel malt with some toffee. There are pine and floral notes with cherry and alcohol.

Feel: It's slightly syrupy with a full body. There is alcohol warming.

Overall, it drinks more like a weak American barleywine. For an American strong ale I felt it should have had more of a hoppy punch to it.

Poured into english pint.
Copper/amber beer with thin ring of beige head.
Complex aroma of toasted malts, caramel, citrusy tones.
The beer is similar to DIPA, but with own intrinsic ASA characters.
A bit boozy, soft carbonation.

Sampling right now on 11/23/15. Bottled on "31/03/14" and really doesn't have a shelf life like a Bud or similar brew here. Comes in a single 330ml (11.2 ounce) bottle. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a vintage 0,2L 'KIRN PILS" tulip glass.

Brew pours a hazy deep-copper orange in color with a good 1-2 finger creamy off-white head. LOTS of lacing is seen when sipped that sticks to the sides of the glass when sipped. Aroma is of sweet dark fruits soaked in alcohol, roasted malts and some citrus zest. More going on with the taste as there is a hint of toffee, caramel also with the citrus zest more towards the finish. No bitter or harsh finish is noted. Medium-bodied with perfect carbonation. Actually a very decent brew.

From zombier. In duvel glass. Playing KB Dark Side. Maybe my palatte isnt trained well.enough, but ive been unablr to enjoy this. Ive found it too sweet and alcoholic to my taste, in some way similar to anarchis alchemist but a bit better, a bit less strong, but still not enjoyable.

Pours into a small tulip glass a hazed amber/brown with a minimal head atop.Sweet cakey notes in the nose along with alcohol dipped fruit and a hint of leafy-minty hops lingering.A mix of of sweet alcohol and dark fruits on the palate with a lightly drying nuttiness, again the cake-like element is noticeable.Maybe a little sweeter than most American strong ales but it's a well made beer.

Bottle pour at Shelton Brothers The Festival 2014 held at Crafted in San Pedro, CA.

Pours a murky orange-brown with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, toffee, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with caramel and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty, but I prefer the Hair Of The Dog version much better.

Serving type: bottle.

Review based on the BJCP2008 guidelines (style 19B adapted). Bottle 33 cl - Batch unknown - Bottled on 30-OCT-2012. AROMA: very rich and sweet malt aroma with dried fruits and caramel notes. smooth vinous and port like alcohol notes. low hop aromas and no diacetyl. some cardboard aroma is present. APPEARANCE: deep Brown color and almost opaque. good moussy light brown head with good retention. some viscosity derived from alcohol without pronunced "legging" TASTE: very nice range of sweet malt flavours (toasted, caramel, toffe) and some dried fruits (dried figs). balanced bitterness lingering into a medium-dry finish. very low hop flavours. faint presence of alcohol flavours. PALATE: medium smooth body with medium-low carbonation. faint alcohol warmth. OVERALL: a good strong and barleywine-like ale with good aromas and a plethora of malt flavours.

330ml bottle. What makes Utrecht the market cornering experts at making/drinking strong ales?

This beer pours a murky, dark orange brick amber colour, with two fingers of bubbly, loosely foamy tan head, which leaves a bunch of random European peninsular (is that Denmark?) lace around the glass as things quickly sink away.

It smells of pungent orange marmalade, candied grapefruit, caramel malt, sticky toffee, pine resin, a further bit of honeydew and cantaloupe fruitiness, and some distinct warming alcohol. The taste is equally heady - orange, mango, and grapefruit concentrate, biscuity, somewhat musty caramel and toffee malt, floral, piney hops, and a well integrated booziness. Simple, and damned good at it.

The bubbles are pretty tight and controlling, the body a stocky medium weight, and rather smooth, with the odd hop tic, but that's alright for now. It finishes off-dry, the gooey malt still well tempered by the stellar citrus, pine, and floral hops.

One well-wrought Yankee strong ale, an almost slavish ode to Arrogant Bastard and the like. Hoppy, malty, all in a barely restrained over-the-top manner, with some duly bristling alcohol. All is contained, but it feels like something just has to give, yet doesn't. Awesome stuff.

Thanks to Jeffo for hooking me up with this one! Slightly cloudy amber-orange pour with a one finger+ creamy white head with decent retention and great lacing. Malt forward nose with hints of pine sap, caramel, maple, and tea, along with some subtle mango and brown bread. The taste is malt dominated as well with huge notes of resiny pine along with hints of toffee, orange zest, butterscotch, and mango. The mouthfeel is somewhat thick and syrupy with very little carbonation and a smooth, bitter, slightly boozey finish. Overall, this is a solid interpretation of the style and another great offering from Rooie Dop.

Hazy red-brown colour with a smooth, light tan head. Fair head retention.

Big fruity aroma. Lots of malt which then flows into a sharp hoppy aroma. Citrussy and crisp. Nice.

Big malty flavour that bags up with bitterness, yeast esters and hop flavour. Lovely balance. The citrus works well here. The bitterness is lingering.

Medium body with moderately-high carbonation. Good.

A really solid beer. Nice balance of malt and hop that is intense, balanced and delicious.

Jeffo gave me this. Thanks man.

Poured into my snifter. Great looking dark amber beer. Nice 1.5 finger head.

Smells like an overripe mango that's hanging from a pine tree. It's that nice.

Bitter hops with a nice balance between what the nose promised and the sturdy malt profile

A medium body with a good amount of carbonation

This is a strong ale that wants to be a double ipa. It's awesome and I want more.

Jeffo, you are pretty much the bomb.

Got this one at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam. A local brewery that is defintely making some noise around here.

From a bottle into a snifter
Bottled at De Molen on 30 October 2012

APPEARANCE: Pours a one finger, thicker looking, cream-white head with good retention. Head fades to a thin wisp and bubbly ring, sticking to the sides of the glass. Maroon red, opaque, with no carbonation evident. Splotchy wisp and some decent lacing is left down the glass. Good looking beer.

SMELL: Hoppy nose with floral notes, light orange peel, mango, and some pine. Caramel and pale malts in there as well. Bold and hoppy nose for sure, with notes of fruity cantelope and honeydew melon. Good stuff.

TASTE: Piney and floral hops up front, with caramel toffee and some booze through the middle into the swallow. Bold and lingering aftertaste of floral bitterness, pine, as well as some orange peel and mango sweetness. Some piney and grassy hop bitterness and a touch of alcohol lingers. Solid again.

PALATE: Medium body and carbonation. Very creamy smooth on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes slightly sticky. Oily body with some lingering bitterness. Good feel.

OVERALL: These guys have done a great job so far. This is a flavorful, hoppy, and well executed beer. There is not much of this stuff around and some of it is being cellared, but I'd beg to have it drunk now, as the hop presence works great in this one right now. Very impressed with the beer and with Rooie Dop in general so far. A welcome addition to Dutch beer culture.
