Microbrouwerij Rooie Dop

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. Be prepared for crazy volcanic action when you pop the cap! The appearance is a murky orange color with a thick white head. The aroma is full of fruit and some grass in the background. The taste is nice and full flavored of hops and grass with some smooth citrus tossed in. Overall, a really good beer, my first one from Rooie Dop.

Pretty simple APA. Hazy amber, not too attractive. Boiled malts and Caramel in the nose and little else. Sweet and bitter taste, with caramel and a tinge of undistinguishable hop bitterness. Not drinkable.

I was luckily outside when I opened it, because the beer went all over the place when I removed the cap, much like biboergosum noticed. It had been sitting in the fridge for a week at least, so it should have been relatively quiet.

 

Hazy, dark orange body with a towering head, several inches tall even with a slow and careful pour. Aromas of yeast, hops, baked bread, earth. Saaz hops dominate the cascade and citra. Light to medium bodied with a prickly finish. Perhaps a touch of peppery spice with earthy hops and yeast. Decent.

 

330ml bottle. Wow, what would drinking anything 24/7 be like? I guess one would have to ask Bukowski, or the like.

This beer spews like a just un-capped oil well the second I release pressure on the cap, let alone pry it off entirely, covering me and my desk, so fuck you very much for that, Rooie Dop and de Molen. No, really, FUCK you. Anyways, it eventually appears a hazy, pale golden amber hue, with a teeming tower of extremely puffy, broadly foamy, and mostly just loosely sudsy dirty white head, which leaves some dusty snow rime lace around the glass as it slowly recedes.

It smells of sugary bready caramel malt, earthy, kind of acrid yeast, sharp orange, red grapefruit, and lime rind, a wet pine needle astringency, and an incredulous metallic alcohol warmth. The taste is grainy, gritty caramel malt, wet Wonderbread, mixed and muddled citrus pith, a bit of dried melon fruitiness, earthy, musty yeast, and further grassy, leafy hops.

The carbonation is obviously lackadaisical from being spent after blowing its gruesome load waaaaay too quickly, the body medium-light in weight, and more or less smooth, the yeast and hops' attention apparently focused elsewhere. It finishes off-dry, the various fruitiness outlasting the wan malt for runner-up in an overall losing race.

For this, I cleaned up my various knickknacks and sundry, all because of an incompetent carbonation or unnamed bottle conditioning schedule? It's not gone off, that I can attest to, but what is there is nothing worth recommending or returning to - a plain, Euro-tinted pale ale, the intended drinkability laughably low.

Amber color with a two fingers aired head with great retention and leaving laces.
Nice citrusy aroma with notes of tangerines, cantaloupe, grapefruit, roses, American yeast, pine and caramels.
Bitter flavor with citrus and grassy hops, orange peel, grapefruit, toasted malts, caramels, American yeast, spices and fresh tea leaves. Dry aftertaste with a long lasting bitterness.
Light body with good carbonation.
An IPA that has the American strength and good complexity, but it is biased to noble hops.

From a bottle into a snifter

Hops: cascade, saaz and citra

APPEARANCE: Pours a one finger, medium looking, fluffy white head with good retention. Cloudy gamboge orange with lower levels of carbonation. A splotchy wisp and ring remain leaving some lacing down the glass. Good looking beer.

SMELL: Grapefruit, honeydew melon and pineapple. Hints of lemon as well. Bold enough.

TASTE: Quite grassy, which wasn't really expected. Grassy hops, bitterness and hints of melon and grapefruit after the swallow. Bitter and grassy, very bitter in fact, floral finish is bold and lingering. Hints of grapefruit too. The saaz has stolen the show a bit here; more so than the nose. Solid and flavorful, though a little too saazy for my tastes and it is perhaps overly bitter.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down smooth and finishes rather dry. Good feel for sure.

OVERALL: A good brew and a nice second running from Ot the Explorer, but the addition of saaz hops kind of made this one less enjoyable for me. I would have preferred if they had simply used the same hop bill as Ot. A little too grassy for me, and the bitterness makes it unbalanced, though a solid session beer for sure.
