Named after one of the famous ’front four’ trails on Mt. Mansfield, this I.P.A. is brewed in the English tradition of pale ales shipped from Britain, around Africa, to India. Those ales contained extra hops and a higher alcohol percentage, which both served as natural preservatives. This ale holds true to those original, defining characteristics. Formerly known as "National IPA" at The Shed Restaurant & Brewery.

DATE: July 22, 2020... OCCASION: the boys roll out Marvel Munchkin in the Poconos--I will need a drink for this!... GLASSWARE: nondescript shaker... pours a dark, hazy, burnt orange brown body... clumpy, off-whitehead clusters into banks of snow along the glass's edge... handsome and appropriate for its style... as the can states, its aroma brings the forest and the orchard--pine and resin abound, slightly dank and sharp, while its citrus kicks with orange, lemon and grapefruit... thick, full-bodied fuzziness, dry at the finish, viscous throughout--pulpy like orange juice... a chewy meal in itself, juicy and robust, buzzing with intention... wreaths of lacing adorn the glass... this strikes a nice balance between the pine/resin and the citrus, with a heaviness that mutes a lot of the citrus immediately... the malt base is firm and bready, which makes this a worthwhile sipper and the best Shed in the Mountain mix...

An average pour from a 12-oz. bottle yielded a fat finger of soapy (many large bubbles) white foam with short retention and sliding spots of lace. Hazy, almost cloudy, light amber in color.
Hops greet the nose; citrus, pine and floral. Toasted and pale malt bring up the rear.
Bright taste of hops, the malt taste is bigger than the smell. Semi-dry and high on bitterness, grainy and grassy with some apple and pear. Toasted bread and cracker compete as alcohol becomes noticeable. The finish is Lager-like, crisp quick and clean. Bitter hops linger on the palate as the once malty richness fades.
Medium light body with just the right amount of lasting carbonation. I think this IPA is on the border of American and English, an enjoyable hybrid anyway.

I recently returned to this brew - they ship in glass, as cans change the contents - and was amazed at whar I consider to be (for me) the perfect IPA. Unfltered cloudiness and a wonderful warm golden glow set the stage for a tangy, fruity come-on. I'm no sophisticate, but as one who likes a citrusy, cloudy, full-bodied IPA, this one was just winderful. And in glass...

This was poured into a nonic pint glass. The appearance was a hazy golden orange with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a good minute. Light stringy lacing sticks and slides into the beer. The smell takes a lemon zest to cross over a delicate grassy sweetness. Light caramel maltiness balances nicely. The taste has a good balance of sweet to bitter to zest. There’s a nice sweet to zesty citrus aftertaste but no finish. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a good sessionability about it. Carbonation runs moderately with a good bitterness pounding appropriately. Overall, as an EIPA, its a bit different as the English side of the aroma doesn’t really show, but hey, I’m thinking more AIPA fans might like this one.
