Style: English India Pale Ale (IPA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Named after one of the famous ’front four’ trails on Mt. Mansfield, this I.P.A. is brewed in the English tradition of pale ales shipped from Britain, around Africa, to India. Those ales contained extra hops and a higher alcohol percentage, which both served as natural preservatives. This ale holds true to those original, defining characteristics. Formerly known as "National IPA" at The Shed Restaurant & Brewery.

Pours a light copper color with some sediment. The nose is nicely hoppy. The flavor profile is well balanced between malt and hops. This is a solid example of an classic English IPA.

Great start but the finish leaves something to be desired.

Pours a three finger off-white head that fades slowly leaving a good lace. Hazy amber color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Light grapefruit hop nose, flavor is grapefruit hops and some caramel malt starts to balance. Not nearly as hoppy as their Profanity ale. Gift.

Even before you see the beer, just the sound of the pour tells you that it's head is the result of carbonation rather than the texture of the beer, and sure enough, the head dissipates quickly.

It smells sort of the way all (decent) beers smelled many years ago, before IPAs started to smell like citrus and pine and what-not. You wouldn't guess it's an IPA from the smell.

It tastes a little better than you'd expect. Bitter hops and English-style malts.

It doesn't feel as overcarbonated as I was expecting. Light in texture, leaving your mouth coated in bitterness.

Not for me, but it does a good job tasting just like the better beers in a typical London pub.

This is intended to be an English-style IPA, and I'm more of a west coast/floral/citrus IPA kind of person (at least at the moment), so I've tried to adjust accordingly.

Considering the genre of the beer, it is excellent in terms of engaging the American palate. It definitely has the sharp bitterness required of an English-style IPA, but it has just enough citrusy hops in the smell and flavor to make it a crossover of sorts. This also, however, puts it dangerously in no-man's land. If I want a citrusy IPA, I would not buy this; I would buy Rebel IPA, Jack's Abby's Hoponius Union, or something else in that domain. I guess if I was looking for something more on the English side I might be inclined to this as a compromise.

The bitter is very tasty, though it may coat the mouth, almost with an oily feel, a little too much. There is also a large amount of carbonation, though it is more notable in the appearance than the mouth-feel.
