The concept of a milk stout with coffee and orange as the primary flavors was very intriguing to me. Upon opening the bottle there was a noticeable hiss, almost like soda. Poured nicely with dark mocha foam to accept jet black body. Smell was pretty dull however. Coffee and not much else. Taste led with coffee but then gave way to a fleeting zap of citrus sweetness on the finish. Different and charming.

Drank from 1 pint, 6 fl. oz. bottle purchased at Fort Point Market, Boston, MA
Served in a tulip

The beer poured a medium bodied, dark chestnut brown. Oily and viscous in the glass. A minuscule, saddle brown film topped the liquid but it quickly dissolved. No lacing whatsoever.

The nose was very simplistic. Dry roasted malts dominated. Somewhat grainy and husky. This smelled a lot more like an Irish dry stout than a milk stout. Subtle dark roast coffee notes appeared later. Bit of sweetness. Some dark chocolate too. Hint of lactose as well.

The flavor profile was even more basic than the nose. Roasted malts again dominated. Husky and grainy. Bit of char and ashiness. Some bitter espresso and bakers chocolate notes were apparent in the center. Touch of sweet cream. More deep roasted malts and graininess on the finish. Subtle earthy hop notes lingered after the swallow.

The mouthfeel was definitely the most impressive aspect of the beer. It was super creamy, slick and smooth. Fuller bodied for the style. The liquid contained a fine, frothy, tongue blanketing effervescence.

Orange peel? Nope. Coffee? Barely any. Either I bought a very old bottle or this beer really lacks nuance. Guessing by the shop at which I purchased this, I am guessing the latter.

Taste: semi sweet chocolate malt, coffee, citrus, lactose, smooth with some boozy bite. Bold deep roasted coffee aroma. Black, opaque, tan refined head and delicate lace in taster glass. Medium/full body. Clean well rounded finish. 40 IBUs.

Pours a deep brown color. Nose is very good with a lot of coffee, taste has more bitter h o plate and burnt and roasted malts. Medium body and moderate carbonation.

A nice beer with a pretty good nose.

I had this then barrel-aged version right after and liked this one a bit better. Cool idea with the orange peel, but I've had that executed poorly before. Not the case here. It's very coffee forward, on both the smell and the taste. There's a bit of sweetness at the back end from the orange. Kind of similar to a maple coffee stout, but you can tell it's orange. Overall, this was really nicely done.

Tasted in a snifter from draft at Kuma's Corner on February 17, 2017. Look is brown with a thin beige head and lingering lacing. Smell and taste is coffee with dark roasted malt flavors and aromas. Feel is medium to full in body with a creamy finish.

A buddy pulled this out of his cellar to share....it poured an opaque black with big tan head that eventually settled and left a spotty lace. The scent was mostly coffee...faint orange peel. The taste was also dominated by coffee and touches of citrus. The mouthfeel was fuller in body with smooth carbonation. Overall...very grateful to have tried it...I see that it is no longer brewed.

22oz bomber shared by TATURBO.

Appearance: Black body with medium brown head. Head pours two fingers tall.

Smell: Lots of bold coffee and nice orange note! Chocolate stout base. Smells awesome. Very unique nose.

Taste: This is a coffee bomb with a substantial taste of orange flesh and orange zest. Chocolaty stout base with a nice dose of lactose sugar. Big bold flavors that all play nicely together. Oranges taste authentic. Coffee is of moderate strength and tastes fresh.

Mouthfeel: medium body stout with low almost moderate carbonation. Undetectable ABV. Creamy carbonation.

Overall: Easily the best Solemn Oath beer that I have drank. This is a unique milk stout as well. Oranges and coffee in a milk stout...I am officially a fan.

An excellent coffee milk stout base is brightened by the perfect amount of orange peel. The natural bitterness of the coffee, hops and orange is balanced by a sweet lactose and chocolate backbone. A terrific beer.

Draft served in a snifter at Bangers & Lace, quick review from notes.

Black orb topped with a thin layer of creamy mocha tinged foam. Spotty lace, webby surface skim in the glass.

Big coffee aroma, rich dark roast. Taste is similar coffee forward, very smooth feel with a lingering residual bitterness. Chewy body, the coffee has depth as well to keep things interesting. At room temp some bitter citrus peel comes out. Probably the best beer I've had from these guys so far.

Bottle from brewery, April 2016.
