July 16th, 2015 - Moving down the tasters at Society Brewing, the next installment is the Gleaner. A curious name, but a curious style, too. It's a saison but clocks in at an intense 7.1% ABV. Soft and pale in color, it looks like elderflower juice, and has a soft and buttery touch on the nose. It's so soft that it is almost unsniffable, The flavor is notably herbal, with a sticky licorice character, lemongrass, cardamom and a sticky mouthfeel to boot. The aftertaste ends with a loud ethanol note, which burns down the palate for the next sip. It's a loud saison and feels like to violates the spirit of the style, but it also works as a tasty beer.

Tulip on tap at THG.
A: Pours clear golden yellow with a a foamy off white head.
S: I get huge notes of sage with undertones of peppery spice, herbal hops, and fruity esters.
T: Taste is sweeter than the nose let on and thick with golden fruits, pear, and residual sugar. Sage is in your face and prominent, but I get a ton of pear, banana, golden delicious apple and white grape. Very sweet but a ton of spice balances. Almost cloying finish, with a ton of esters and lingering spice. Leafy and sage aftertaste. Lightly bitter but mostly sweet.
M: Full body, thick and heavy mouth, almost syrupy with sweetness. Fuzzy and lightly tingly carbonation helps the mouthfeel.
O: I liked it and thought it had a unique flavor, but the second half of the glass became a chore. Too sweet to drink a lot of.

Saison with wild sage. On tap at Waypoint Public in North Park. Slightly hazy in the 16 oz tulip. Color is light amber with an exemplary white, creamy head. Plenty of spritz on the tongue.
This is a seriously funky affair. It has that sweet spoiled fruit taste with a whiff of the barnyard. The sage is just an interesting herbal sidelight. It adds a slight bitterness to the yeasty scratch.
This is a whacky brew, but intriguing and full of the Belgian flavors.
