Shock Top Wheat IPAShock Top Wheat IPA

Brewed by:
Missouri, United States

Style: American Pale Wheat Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Shock Top Wheat IPA is no traditional beer. It’s a unique hybrid that combines the fresh flavor and smoothness of wheat beer with the crisp hop bitterness of an IPA. The result is a beer that is truly like no other.

To serve, pour down the side of the glass until a half inch is left in the bottle. Swirl the remaining brew and pour to produce a rich, thick collar of foam that releases the citrusy Cascade hop aroma.

12oz twist-top with no date.

Look is a great, cloudy, amber-orange with plenty of fine suspended sediment. Great looking brew. Smell is lemon, orange, coriander, wheat, and an earthy grass smell that may be the hops. Weak for an IPA, pleasant otherwise. Taste is similar: wheat, grass, orange peel, coriander, sweet rotten bread. Overly sweet, lackluster taste otherwise. Alcohol burn in the finish, along with a cloying dullness.

This isn't an awful beer, but it doesn't do a whole lot right. The hops are non-existant and there isn't a malt presence either. Very sweet with alcohol in the finish, I feel like this should be in a 40oz bottle.

Shock Top Wheat IPA pours to an orange/gold color with a nose that is faint, featuring the aroma of wheat and some fruit. The head of foam is also faint, but it at least maintains a thin layer as you consume.

This beer attempts to combine the qualities of an IPA with a wheat beer but from an IPA perspective, it fails to impress. The taste is one of sweet malts, bread, a very small amount of coriander, and orange. The finish is grainy and sweet, with only a dash of hop bitterness that quickly switches back to a sweet malt flavor in the aftertaste.

Shock Top Wheat IPA attempts to marry the qualities of a wheat beer and an India Pale Ale, but if this beer is any indication, the two would be better off divorced. The combination sounds interesting, but this beer simply doesn’t pull off the feat. The wheat flavor is most dominate, but there is really nothing here that would lead you to believe that IPA was part of the product’s inspiration. Even the wheat character is lame and it isn’t robust in any way. The citrus taste is present, in the form of oranges, but it is also sorely lacking. The coriander is barely detectable and I think it is safe to say that most drinkers wouldn’t even realize that coriander was present unless they read the words on the label.

If you want an IPA, I strongly suggest looking elsewhere because there is little to nothing present in this flavor combination from Shock Top that will satisfy your IPA hop cravings. The combination of wheat and IPA sounds intriguing, but it just doesn’t work very well with this product.

Pours a dark amber with some light haze throughout. 3cm of off-white head that dissapates with no lacing to speak of. Even with a deep whiff I get almost nothing except a very faint citrus hop. The hop disappear on the palate and it’s just an underwhelming light sweetness, like maybe honeysuckle, and then a tang of bitterness somewhere in there. Very watery, finishes with a whimper.

Poured from a 12oz bottle to a pint glass, Color is an amber/orange with a 1/8" white head that leaves good lacing. Aroma is that of wheat and faint munich malt. Tase is the same as aroma, zero hop flavor or aroma, and maybe 30 IBUs. Not bitter enough. Mouthfeel is too sweet, and not enough carbonation. This is not an IPA.

I poured this beer into a pint glass. It has a nice dark golden color body with not head or lace. The smell of wheat. The taste is of wheat with a faint taste of hops. The mouthfeel is ok and overall i don't like this beer and i don't know why it says it is a wheat IPA, when there are no characters of a ipa in it.

Poured a hazy copper hue with a two finger frothy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a muddled wheat malt with a light cascade hop and fleeting esters.

The taste was a mishmash of flavors. The hops were overpowered by the wheat malt. There was no eaters to speak of.

The mouthfeel was slightly chewy.

Overall a good idea that lacked identity in practice.

A: Lots of head, hazy, a dull bronze tint. Some sticky lacing. Nice.

S: Some weak wheat tang, soft fruit. Nothing else really.

T: Light oranges, apricot, bread, coriander. I'm not sure how they can get away calling this an IPA.

M: Gets almost cloyingly sweet due to the malts. Mild hop citrus aftertaste comes out more while warming up.

O: Another faux craft beer from the macros to avoid. Not good at all.

The beer pours a hazy golden-orange color with a white head. The aroma is fairly faint, with a hint of perfume and a little bit of wheat. The flavor is also fairly faint. There is some light fruit and some perfume, as well as a little bit of grass and some wheat. The flavor is fairly muddled, with nothing really standing out. Thin mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
