First review for this beer in almost a year! I hope it's not too terribly outdated. Pulled from a friend's fridge after swapping him for some fresher brews. Curiosity got the best of me and I nabbed the rest of his project 12.

The "Deep Gold" beta tester pours exactly that, with 90% transparency and a 2 finger head that dissipates quickly like a typical budweiser beer.

Aroma is bready, sweet with bourbon whiskey and rum-like aromas, with corn and straw. A louder bouquet would have been nice but this isn't bad.

It's got this nasty sweetness to it after an initial hop bite that reminds me of dipping bread into maple syrup or pancake batter. It's actually a lot like a bottom shelf sweet malt liquor. The aftertaste is of brown sugar, bread crumbs, and hints of breathy alcohol.

Feel is light bodied, bordering on medium, tons of carbonation, a syrupy finish.

Overall I don't know whether to blame the age on this beer or just the fact that it sucked from the start. I've aged beers and they hold up much better so I think this is more to do with a bad attempt at a craft lager. It's about like a Bud Ice mixed with a little craft quality. Dump.

Appearance: Clear, deep golden in color, with a large, dense white head, with outstanding retention. Scattered, alien hieroglyph lacing adorns the glass walls, the carbonation is moderate and slow-rising.

Aroma: Light biscuit malt aroma with pleasant floral hops.

Taste: Begins with cracker malt, soon followed by substantial bread notes, grassy hops are present as well, as the taste progresses, there is a faint light fruit note. Finishes clean with mainly grassy, but also slightly spicy hops.

Mouth feel: Soft, pleasant, and rather full, with a touch of sharp carbonation.

Drinkability/notes: Nicely done, a refreshing Pilsener.

Presentation: Packaged in a standard twelve-ounce brown glass long-neck bottle with a twist-off crown, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice. This example has been refrigerated since purchase.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #72 (Jan 2013):

Going for sort of a pre-Prohibition or “original” Bud angle with this one. As expected, too clean for its own good. Some spikes of flavor here and there, we were expecting a little more out of this one. Comparatively there are some retro lagers that hold more character to this beer. Decent at best.

STYLE: Pre-Prohibition Lager
ABV: 6.0%
AVAILABILITY: Limited

LOOK: Golden, perfect clarity, tightly bubble head

SMELL: Floral, mild hop spice, dried hay, slightly herbal, very clean

TASTE: Dry, very crisp, clean, dried grass, faint cooked cereal, slightly bitter, light herbal hop, balanced, mild slickness, alcohol, floury crackers, dry finish
