It starts with a big fruity nose with dark sugars, a hint of cola, spice, a faint hint of sherry and traces of alcohol. It pours kind of a hazy tea color with a 1" off-white foam cap that fairly quickly dissipates. The palate is rich and creamy, cherry, dried fruit, fig, and sweet suggesting toffee especially in the finish with a touch of bitterness. The fruit flavors have stronger prune notes as it warms. It is chewy, with medium to medium low carbonation. While it has a lot going on it needs more depth and perhaps ages to really come together.

Pours a red caramel color with a slight head that dissipates quickly. Smells like straight malt syrup. Tastes like cola and caramel. Slight carbonation. Not bad not great.

L: pours a light brown rusty water color with no head. Very dark brown in the glass.
S: rich and smooth but mellow bourbon. It has that awesome babw aroma I look for; bourbon soaked caramel covered raisins!
T: Huge flavors! All in balance and not overly sweet or barrel dominate. Awesome bourbon soaked caramel covered raisins.
F: ultra smooth and drinkable. I love the zero carbonation, thick and coating.

2013 bottle, properly cellared. Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a medium to dark reddish orange with a thin, light khaki head that dissipates to patches with light lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, plums, dates and aged hops. Flavor is caramel malt, dates, hints of cherry and orange, mild pine resin and a little grassy hop bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied with light creaminess. Another hopped barleywine I should have tried fresh as well as aging, but here it is in my cellar and I can't unage it. Once again, although I have found I don't enjoy aged hops, this has held up surprisingly well. The base is definitely American style with bright fruit and some citrus notes, but it has good dark dried fruit character as well. Not a complex as some other big barleywines, but is quite drinkable. A bit hot still, but has enough body to support the big ABV. This aged five years quite well and I'm now more interested in my 2017 BBA Massive that is still waiting. A worthy barleywine that I will get again if it's brewed, but I will drink it fresher to see the hop character.
