I somehow segued into Imperial/Sweet/Milk/Chocolate Stouts towards the end of New Beer Sunday (Week 687), which was yesterday. I had this one ready to go to add to The CANQuest (tm), but a 9.1% ABV beer suddenly seemed a bit daunting. I decided to hold off until I got home today to pick up where I had left off, if you CAN dig it!

From the CAN: "Brewed with copious amounts of Chocolate malt and caramelized chocolate from Pierre's New Hope added to the boil, Imperial Chocolate Mudbank is a tuned up version of our Winter seasonal with all the chocolate bang for your buck. This jet black brew is chock full of bready 2-row barley, biscuity Victory, and enough Caramel malt, and Flaked Oats for a bold, rich, big mouthfeel and taste. Hopped with Fuggles and coming in at 9.1% ABV this hefty brew is sure to keep you warm on a cold Winter's night as well. Too bad Winter is only three months long! This limited brew is only available once every two [even numbered] years, so be sure to keep a few bottles in the basement, as this beer will age and grow in character with time."

I Crack!ed open the vent on this Pint of foolishness & beCAN a slow, gentle Glug. A vigorous in-glass swirl raised just under two fingers of dense, foamy, light-tan head with good retention that left behind some nice lacing as a calling card. Color was Very Dark Brown to Black/Opaque (SRM = > 34, < 44), allowing cola highlights at the edges. Nose was quite sweet & quite chocolaty. Mmm. I am not generally crazy about sweet anything, but some of these Stouts have been quite enjoyable. Mouthfeel was big, full & creamy, like a dollop on my tongue. This was unabatingly sweet, really chocolaty & true to their advertising. It was kind of making me sweat a little as I am not that big a fan of sweet. It was beCANming clear that for me this was a novelty, not one that I would want on a regular basis. Finish was sweet chocolaty & I was ready for a slug of water to wash it down. Phew!

Can from my brother. Pours out kind of thin, small ring of head. Sweet chocolate in the aroma, lacto notes. Taste also is sweet, a bit of heat, bur mostly lacto sweetness. Some of the roast grains, and body is thin.

A - Black colored pour with frothy and dense tan colored lacing that's very sticky.

S - Sweet chocolate, cream, cocoa, dark roasted chocolate.

T - Roasted, cocoa, earthiness, cream, and alcohol presence.

M - Thick and frothy with a silky mouthfeel.

O - A heavy hitting Milk Stout that still retains all the qualities without being overly boozy. Recommended.

Poured from bottle into a snifter

Appearance – The beer pours an almost pitch black color with a one finger of tan colored head. The head has a fantastic level of retention, slowly fading to leave a moderate level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is actually heavies to of a roasted malt smell and not chocolate as I would have anticipated. It does however also have a milk chocolate smell that carries with it a lactose and vanilla sweetness. A little bit of a caramel smell and a hint of a darker fruit is there as well.

Taste – Unlike the nose, the taste begins with a huge and smooth milk chocolate bar like taste with tons of milky lactose flavors and a big vanilla presence. This chocolate flavor remains massive throughout the entire taste creating a fantastically smooth milk chocolate flavor throughout. There is a moderate roastiness upfront that gains just a hint of intensity toward the end. Some flavors of cherry and plum also develop on the tongue throughout the taste mixing with the milk chocolate and the roasted flavors to leave a delicious lightly fruited sweet milk chocolate bar flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is super thicker and creamy with a carbonation level that is low. The feel is amazing for the rich milk chocolate flavor so the brew coating the tongue in all the rich flavors and creating a very smooth and lush feel.

Overall – This is a delicious and decadent chocolate brew. The mix of big sweet chocolate with the fantastically smooth feel make for one very nice sipping dessert beer.

22 oz bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance
Pours dark brown approaching black with 2 fingers of fluffy, light tan head. Excellent retention along with some very subtle light penetration along the edges.

Nose
Semi-sweet chocolate, raisin, licorice, cocoa and molasses.

Taste
Raisin and prune mingled with semi-sweet chocolate and powdered cocoa. Creamy milk along with notes of licorice and molasses. Finishes with a light earthy bitterness that never overrides the sweetness.

Mouthfeel
Full bodied, silky, creamy and smooth.

Overall
Chocolates and dark fruits mixed with a beautifully creamy and milky body. Impeccably smooth and easy drinking for 9.1%.
