Mostly clear orange color, somewhat bubbly, with a finger and a half of off-white head that leaves heavy rings of lacing.

Oddest aroma of clementine-like citrus and chocolatey coffee. Not something I expected would work, but it smells great -- like orange-flavored chocolate.

The taste is more muted, with dull citrus, moderate bitterness and nice creamed-coffee flavors. Definitely more straight-up coffee than chocolate here. Quality coffee, too.

The mouthfeel is a little on the thin side, but I guess to style, and also fairly well carbonated.

Can't imagine this would age well, and disappointed there's no canned on date, but other than that, I'm loving it. Definitely the best hop-forward or light-colored coffee beer I've ever had.

Poured into a small chalice: color is slightly hazy copper to light amber, head is light tan with froth thick head of at least 1 inch, head lingers very well with froth top of at least 1/2 inch for many minutes afterwards.

Smell is quite pleasant with a blend of hops, malt, and lightly roasted coffee; notes are floral, grassy, slightly fruity and some toast and light/medium roast coffee.

Taste is similar with nice mix of malt, coffee, and hops: flavors are light roasted coffee, grapefruit/piney hops, light caramel and toasted malts.

Mouthfeel is on the bitter side of pale ales with an added tinge aged bitterness and moderate carbonation.

Overall a good coffee pale ale with a great blend of coffee seeping through a very good pale ale base.

The beer pours from the can into a Duvel glass a nice dark amber color with an almost brown tinge and with a slight haze. The 1/2" thick off white head is nice and foamy but soon begins to recede to a ring, a thin layer on the surface of the liquid and some leggy patches of lacing. Sipping creates speckles and small patches of lacing that cling to the glass.

The aroma is mostly dark roast coffee with some touches of pine and tropical fruit.

The flavors are a bit more complex than the nose. The focus is on the dark roast coffee, which rides over a background of caramel malt sweetness that is also mingled together with hints of citric grapefruit tang, some tropical fruit and some touches of pine. As with the base APA, the bitterness is most noticeable towards the back of the mouth but this one also includes a strong coffee component.

The mouth feel is medium bodied and smooth with persistent gentle carbonation. The medium length finish is clean, dry, lightly bitter and persists for a moderately long time, inviting another sip. The dark roast black coffee and the dry hop bitterness take a long time to completely disappear. However, it is not unpleasant to have them hanging around for a while.

This is an interesting variation on the base APA from this same brewery. As with the original version, this beer is drinkable and I’ll definitely be having it again in the next week or so. (Unlike the base APA, which is available year round, this one is a seasonal offering.) Since this is a local beer it should be relatively easy to find it fresh both now and when they release it again next year. That all said, I’ll not be drinking as much of this beer as I do the base beer. The coffee variant is tasty and interesting, but I prefer the base APA which seems to me to display more aroma/flavor complexity.

-Spiegelau ipa glass from can.

A: Bright orange has a medium rate of clarity, small haziness, with a medium density of quick paced carbonation. Creamy, frothy milk head is sticky and thick in consistency, and well holding, addressing the vessel nicely with thick bands of lace.

S: Lemony fruity coffee scent first on the nose, followed by a fresh roastiness of grounded beans. Some freshly grated chocolate along with some fruity notes from the nugget hops. Really digging the fresh coffee nature on this one. What the eyes don't see, the nose observes.

T: Strange first impression, a rather hearty roastiness from the fresh coffee has a medium dry intensity, despite the brightly colored orange body, which throws off the senses a bit with conflict. Some funky orange peels, sticky hop resins of dry fruit and pine add bitterness and a long lingering after effect.

M: Sticky hop resins on the medium full body. A mid-range amount of carbonation texture and dry bitterness fills the mouthful.

O: A strange experience indeed. Not expecting such a fresh coffee nature from a brightly lit drink. The coffee presence is proud and loud, perhaps overtaking at times the original intentions of the nugget hops. Sticky dry fruit and fresh coffee grounds add for a unique experience worthy a try. Not sure how i would feel about multiples here, but definitely one worth checking out for something unique. Still not sure how well the hoppy coffee style will end up, but its a new fad it seems that adds a new twist in hybrid styling.

Pours a light amber color with less than a half finger of head. The nose has bold notes of coffee.

As for the flavor profile, there are notes of coffee, malt and hops. Unfortunately, these flavors don't seem to blend well together. The combination of hops and roasted coffee do, however, seem to produce a nicely bitter finish.

12oz can into a pint glass, no freshness dating.

slightly hazy yellow body. small white head. decent lacing.

aroma is of coffee. nothing else. good coffee, to be sure.

flavor is of good coffee, with a bit of a hop bite.

close to medium on the mouth. finish is a bit odd. seems somewhat watery at times, decent hop bite, with the ever present coffee.

Overall, and i really like original JAWN, and coffee, and pale ales, this one just seems a bit unbalanced to this palate. the coffee is good, but to me at least, a bit less coffee and a bit more JAWN would have been better.

On tap in a pint glass at Tenessee Beer Hall in AC.

See through dark orange color with a finger’s worth of soft white cap. Lots of sticky lacing.

The citrus and coffee combine for a very pleasant aroma. It’s a bit fruity and true to the brewer’s form, slightly dank and earthy.

Fresh coffee flavor with pale malt, fresh citrus, pine, and a touch of chocolate.

Medium body, well carbonated. Coffee and hop bitterness.

Hoppy with coffee flavor and favorable abc make a good drinker.
