Notes / Commercial Description:
Leon is a big beer. So big, it has twice as much malt as any other beer we brew.. On top of the copious amounts of two row barley, Munich, Victory, Chocolate, Black Patent, and Caramel 80 malt in this beer each 15 barrel brew has 50 pounds of freshly in-house handmade marshmallow fluff as well as 16 pounds of bittersweet bakers chocolate, and 30 pounds of crumbled graham crackers. Leon clocks in at just over 80 IBUs and 11.6% ABV. Does it taste like a Smore’s? That’s for you to decide, but either way this is one fun beer to make, not to mention drink.

Neshaminy Creek Brewing Co. "Leon Russian Imperial Stout"
on tap

Look: Typical R.I.S. appearance. Average head retention. Limited lacing.

Smell: Very chocolatey. Dark chocolate with some roast and a hint of dark sugar.

Taste: Again, very chocolatey with dark bittersweet chocolate. Some roastiness like cold black coffee, caramel, toast, and fruit (apple, soft pear). It hints at coconut but never really gives it to you full out. A solid bitterness balances it. The alcohol has a presence but never really shows until the lingering finish which is dry, roasty and chocolatey with a snap of alcohol.

Feel: Medium leaning medium-full in body with a delicately crisp carbonation that foams up in the mouth as it warms becoming "pillowy' or "airy".

Overall: Not a bad take on the style at all but somehow missing a little bit of the magic that makes some others stand out. Oddly, this is made with additional, and expensive, ingredients (marshmallow, chocolate, and graham crackers) but they haven't helped; nor do the really stand out and make it unique.

1/27...bomber pours all out black. Thick as midnight, light rings of brown foam. Thick coffee nose, picks up the graham crackers too. Rich robust flavor, as kinds of tastes. Dark chocolate, coffee, milk, and the smore tastes are there too (but only b/c I am looking for it). The depth of flavor masks the alcohol, but it is in there. The result is outstanding.

- with Marshmellow, chocolate and graham crackers.

A: A viscose inky, black pour exits the bottle producing a firm, bready textured hazelnut colored head of one finger standing. Retention was above average, leaving a fine whispy line of lacing on the vessel. A good sense of micro-beads creep up along the vessel walls rather quickly with the pitch dark background, like shooting stars to the surface.

S: Dry bakers chocolate can be had on the nose, with a deep and roasted nature balanced by a sweetness of burnt marshmellow. A small charred wood presence and campfire ash is detected, along with dry roasted barley and oats giving this a good standing.

T: The flavor was thick and viscose, milky chocolate base malts and no doubt oats thicken this up like porridge soup or oatmeal. Oily bittering roast brings a dark and vibrant nature to the flavor balanced with the burnt sense of marshmellow as with the nose. Roasted hop flowers and pine leave a nice tender chardness and coating on the tongue. Rich chocolate and marshmellow and malt sweetness mask the massive 11.2% abv without a second thought. Smoked pine and a beautiful silty touch of roasted malts an chocolate licorice and dark fruit of plums rounds things out.

M: Thick and chewy base malts, no doubt some oats here, give this a heavy chew factor and milky thickness. Bittering sense of roasted malts on inner cheeks, again no real detection of alcohol here, even when warmed beyond proper serving temperature.

O: A huge flavor and roasted appeal, with an exceptional mouthful provides a silky roasted treat, smooth bitterness and deceptive alcohol appeal with a very smooth drinkability factor. Love the burnt sweetness of marshmellow, cant say i picked up on the emphasis of the graham crackers unless it contributed to the mouthful rather flavor. Very smooth and underated imho.
