I'm not a fan of bitter beers, but this to me wasn't too bitter. I was actually pleasantly surprised about it. It reminds me of those grapefruit like IPA's (Hop Nosh and A Little Sumpin' Sumpin'.. both of which are HIGHLY rated here on BA) but Evil Genius establishes that flavor without the harsh bitterness. Evil Genius says it has an IBU rating of 50 which isn't nearly that bad compared to other IPA/APA beers. A pretty decent beer imo! I foresee the ratings of this beer increasing when more people try it. Especially if Hop Nosh and A Little Sumpin' Sumpin' have ratings in their mid 90's. I see this very comparable to those. Just a pleasant beer and easy to drink. A beer should taste good! The malts balance out the citra hops very well. Good stuff!

I wish EG would put the ABV percentage on the bottle. I can't find it anywhere. Although the "born on date" is included. Nice!

Maybe I'm just a bit too much white trash.I compare anything claiming to be grapefruit against Shiner Bock Ruby Redbird. Tasting on tap at BJ'S Brewhouse at the bartenders recommendation after I commented on the lack of grapefruit flavor in the Ballast Point Sculpin Grapefruit IPA. Aroma is certainly grapefruit and taste starts out that way though it fades fast. As another reviewer pointed out this is a pale ale not an IPA so none of that wonderful bitterness but still a solid summer brew I would serve at a BBQ or pool party.

Evil Genius Beer Company "Turtle Power Grapefruit Pale Ale"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, coded "031.17" and sampled on 24 April 2017
$2.29 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Well it's certainly grapefruity, I can smell it from a foot away. There's also some maltiness to it and it suggests sweetness. The label states "natural flavor added" so that makes sense, and before even tasting it I'm guessing it's not going to be sharp and acidic like real grapefruit. What about bitterness? It's listed at 50 IBUs, that's not bad - I have to keep in mind this is a pale ale, not an IPA. Hazy golden body that appears amber in a full pint unless raised to the light. Frothy then creamy white head. Pretty good head retention so far. Off we go... great sweet and almost candyish grapefruit aroma. More malt in the flavor, coming across as beer rather than something else, although I kind of miss the grapefruity goodness that the aroma promises. Ahh, that would be too sweet overall, and not that drinkable; and there is some grapefruit to the flavor so... The bitterness balances it nicely. It's a little sweetish upfront, but then it balances as the bitterness comes through midway, and then it fades a bit in the finish leaving some of that sweetness behind. Ahh, I have to remember, again, that this is a pale ale and not an IPA. As a pale ale it works, as an IPA it would be too sweet. The lacing is OK; average across the board in appearance I'd say. I'm picking up a little more resin in the aroma as it warms, and a touch of pine in the flavor, but there's also even more tangerine/melon/papaya coming through as well. I should have waited for it to warm up a bit rather than just taking it from the fridge, opening and pouring it, and then walking over to the computer; it's really become a different beer at this point, much more tropical and full than the very focused grapefruit that I was initially finding. Medium-bodied and moderately crisp. Some residual malt does linger in the finish. Overall it's pretty damned tasty and easy to drink even if it is a touch sweet. As a summer beer I'll definitely give it a thumbs-up.

6/17/17...pours clear gold, very still, no foam. Strong grapefruit nose. Pale fruity malt taste. Modest grapefruit, but not fully integrated. Creamy mouthfeel, light bodied. Grapefruit rind eventually drifts in. So so.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a dark golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of grapefruit, little else. Taste is grapefruit, balanced malts and hops, a touch of juicyness. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is an easy drinking beer.

-Grapefruit pale ale with natural flavors added. consumed from a spiegelau ipa glass.

A: Soft orange coloring, moderate clarity with a soft, lazy rise of carbonation, medium density. Dirty white creamy head is slight of size as well stamina but laces well with a respectable coating.

S: Floral orange and grapefruit first up, soft and perfumy, backed by a sweet kick of tropical sweetness. Accents of fresh lime with a nice awareness adds a little citrus kick to the aroma with a decent lasting impression.

T: Tropical fruit, spicy pineapple-orange, bright tangerine twang, crisp pale malts with hints of melon and lime following. A soft citrusy hopping, semi-wet, dry orange moves in before closing with a soft helping of grapefruit pulp, lightly dry, with some light tart lemon. Hopping is well respected per style.

M: Decent crispness, medium bodied, slightly sticky tropical and hop resins on the tongue with a slight tartness off the tongue. Feels crisp and sharp like a good summer time pale should.

O: Overall adequately hopped, semi-dry tropical notes brings a refreshing crisp feel for a hot summer day without being overly drying and obnoxious about it. A very good beach and poolside beverage, with a crisp feel and pale malting that is very clean and sharp in flavor. The natural flavor aspect always scares me on a label but this felt naturally, like it was contributed by the hops instead of forced on the drink, and made this a tropical delight with tart grapefruit and lemonade notes. Refreshing 6 pack worthy purchase.
