DATE TASTED: December 26, 2015... GLASSWARE: la Fin du Monde tulip...OCCASION: the 2015 Christmas experience has concluded, and I know feel a ho-ho-ho-themed beer is appropriate for review... APPEARANCE: first--great beer name, though a mouthful to order in a crowded bar...swiftly dispelled foamy, fizzy head becomes a weak ring that ultimately flattens; the body itself holds a scotch-like consistency, with few bubbles to speak of and a translucent orange-brown hue... AROMA: cinnamon, light flowers--rose isn't a stretch--more definite black currants, and some dusty, musky astringency ...PALATE: more effervescent than the body suggests; warming, dry and sippable... oily, medium-bodied, with a reasonably resilient aftertaste... TASTE: the first impression is flower, but the rose is syrupy, with suggestions of raisin, oak, and cough drop form an unholy alliance of odd holiday cheer; malts are bready and blunting; the syrupy sweetness is tough to overlook...tough to find much more in this...OVERALL: SO wanted to celebrate this offering, but the experience would only be winning if drunk (not the beer, but me) while watching its namesake... what could be a light, assertive saison is actually a medicinal, manufactured character-lacking beer with an awesome name....

Evil Genius Beer Company "Santa!! I Know Him!"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, "BORN ON 2015/ 10 / 15"

Apparently someone at Evil Genius has a thing for Will Ferrel movies! I guess it's a pretty good name though; and I'm happy that they took my advice and decided to do interesting beers rather than just trying to market a Yuengling Lager knock-off.

This particular beer, however, is not their best. At it's base it's a malty, ready, and honeyish Belgian ale with spicy and gently clove-like yeast characteristics. There's a pleasant note of fruitiness that's probably coming partially from the yeast (plum-like), and partially from the black currants they've added. It doesn't feel thoroughly fermented to me though, and it's a little sweetish. Probably because of that, or at least partially because of that, the fruit and the botanicals (rose hips, chamomile) don't quite gel - they seem to kind of float outside of the malt rather than becoming woven in. Or perhaps the cause is even simpler than that: it's got a full body along with a limited carbonation level, leaving it flabby, and then sticky in the mouth with just some residual spice and low level bitterness to balance it. Perhaps a bit more carbonic acidity would help to liven the tongue and cut through the maltiness. Beyond that it's not a bad beer, it's just not as balanced and polished as it could be. Perhaps next year's batch will offer a little more finesse.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle brewed in Connecticut. There is a smudged date stamp that looks a little like Btld on 25/11/15. Hard to tell.

Attractive looking copper-amber pour with nice clarity and a short-lasting off-white head.

The aroma is all over the map with Belgian roasted malts, light spice, light fruit, and a floral hop note in the background. Also seems like there is a cellar mustiness to it.

Medium and smooth body.

The taste tends to focus on the overripe fruit and Belgian sweetness but there is a slight sour/tart thing going on that is not offensive but definitely makes you think Farmhouse. Not bad.

A- copper color with gold tints. Little to no head and minimal lacing.

S- flower aroma with hints of tea and black pepper. Strong on the booze as well.

F- strong flavor of flowery hop and honey/tea malt.

M- chewy and medium bodied. Like drinking a flower with honey drizzled on it.

O- not bad..have had worse and have had better. it gets harder to finish as i go deeper into the bottle.

Glad to be the first one to review this beer. Kind of strange to have a farmhouse beer as their winter release but I pour it into my goblet.

A - Looks to be good carbonation a lot of breweries tend to have too much giving it a seltzer water kind of consistency. Much darker than I expected for the style a very deep shade of orange yellow.
S - Smells somewhat sweet mostly funky with a strong yeast presence.
T - Kind of flat in the taste I guess it needed that extra carbonation to liven the taste up a bit. Getting some sweet black currant and a somewhat laid back yeasty body with a bready kind of finish.
M - Out of place for the style it doesn't have that crisp zippy body one would expect for a saison but in the same breath its easy to drink because the yeast isn't cloying.

Overall taste is decent but the body is kind of muddled. Not one of the better beers I had from this company.

The beer pours out into a Duvel glass a dark amber with a 1/4" ivory head that soon recedes to a ring and thin layer of foam on the surface. Sipping leaves patches and legs of lacing.

The aromas include some Belgian yeast character and hints of floral and dark fruits in the background.

The flavors are much more complex than the nose. There's a lot of sweetness here along the yeast, some floral and fruity flavors.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly prickly with light but persistent carbonation. The finish begins as the sweetness slowly fades and the floral fruitiness is temporarily replaced by some earthy dry bitterness which then disappears as the floral fruitiness re-emerges to finish the show.

On the whole this is a reasonably beer but one that needs a bit of tuning up to control the sweetness and enhance the other flavor elements. It will be interesting to see if next year's batch is an improvement.

On tap at Morris Tap and Grill in Randolph. Pours a golden effervescent hue with moderate frothing. Candied aroma replete with hints of sugar and citrus. Similar overall flavor profile.
