Appearance is a reddish brown with practically no head. The nose has muted notes of malt with some seasonal spices. The flavor profile tastes like a watered-down version of a Belgian Strong Dark. The finish has the same watery quality.

This is the third offering that I have had from Evil Genius and my reviews of them all are similar – thin weak and bland.

12 ounce bottle, poured into a pint glass

Appearance: Pours a very pretty, clear, deep, dark brown color with a quarter of a finger of white head that dissolved into a thin halo of foam that gripped the sides of the glass and formed wispy clouds that partially covered the top of the beer.

Aroma: Very roasty and malty up front, with strong notes of freshly baked dark bread, coffee, molasses and licorice.

Taste: A lot like the aroma. It has lots of roasted malt and coffee flavors, balanced with some brown sugar or dark molasses-like sweetness. The beer finishes with some very assertive spices of star anise or wormwood, imparting a very strong licorice flavor that I don’t like.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied to slightly chewy. The beer has hardly any carbonation what-so-ever, and with an ABV of 5.7%, there is no presence of alcohol on the palate.

Overall: This is an interesting beer, with some nice roasted flavors, but there’s too much licorice flavor in it that actually turns me off. If you like licorice, you’ll like this beer, but if you don’t, like I don’t, I recommend that you pass on it.

Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. Has a plain silver bottle cap for beer cap aficionados. The appearance is a translucent, deep, dark brown color with a small white. The aroma is full of roasted malt and yeast. The flavor follows the aroma and has a nice roasted malt flavor. A fairly good spiced herb beer.

2/26...tested in a mix a six. Pours dark brown, deep reddish hints with white foam layers. Cinnamon/nutmeg smell, some cherries. Cloves. Taste is light, almost watery, malty sweet spiced back. Light mouthfeel. A touch too sweet though.

I have enjoyed many Evil Genius beers before. I have to say though that this is not one of their best ones. For the first time in a long time I struggled to finish this beer. I said to myself Ill stick it out and see if it gets better like most beers do. The more I drank the less I liked it. I can taste the chocolate and coffee at the beginning and the end. It has a slight boozy taste and is a surprise for the amt of alcohol in this beer. It has a good mouth feel and is spicy for the style. I guess I expected more and was turned off by the alcohol taste and the dryness. If they can balance this out and make it more malty and less alcohol then it will be perfect.

- Born on 10-16-13. Consumed 2-15-14.

A: Soft cola pour produces a weakly holding and quickly dissipating khaki head. No apparent lacing. Ordinary in appearence.

S: Nose was spicy rootbeer, cola, cinnamon, with a lightly dry munich and worty sweetness balanced with an earthy soft coffee ground roast fade.

T: Flavor was fresh roasty coffee grounds, cola-cinnamon spicing, with an earthy bitterness on the close. Fleshy dark fruit skin, chocolate with a spicy bite of dark sweet fruit (plums). Things conclude with a dark malty coffee touch with a slight hint of evergreen adn barrel woodiness. Some piney needles and black licorice accents.

M: spicy with a bite of of tingling carbonation. Good malty depth.

O: Overall earthy flavor with a sweet nose, mid-range appeal, decent drinkability for a winter warmer, alcohol is well tamed with a variety of spices that are well balanced without being obnoxious.
