Appearance - This beer poured from a 660 ml into a tulip glass, pours jet black with 3 fingers foamy off white head, the head lasts for quite some time creating an amazing black IPA look.

Aroma - Fresh earthy hops, some pine, light toffee and caramel malts, coffee.

Taste - Earthy hops and caramel, toffee, coffee, some fruityness from the hops, pine and a bitter earthy finish.

Feel - Medium full body, Creamy carbonation. bitter finish.

Overall - This is a decent rendition of the style. The flavors come together well and it looks fantastic, I still love it when two brewers collaborate and show the world that competition doesnt have to be there fierce and that the market is big enough to be friends. We make better beer this way,

660ml (that's what the label sez) bottle, a thoughtful gift from stand-up dude rogerdandy, via his stellar Québécois connections. This one indicates that it's actually brewed at Pit Caribou, but screw it, I'm not gonna add to the BA clutter-sphere.

This beer pours a near solid, mahogany highlighted black, with a teeming tower of puffy, finely foamy, and somewhat creamy beige head, which leaves some stellar chunky mountain stream lace around the glass as it lazily recedes.

It smells of lightly roasted caramel malt, creamed toffee, zippy fresh fruit hoppy esters - white grapefruit, orange, and pineapple rind - some laid-back pine forest floor astringencies, a twinge of free-agent wet ash, and further muted tropical fruit notes. The taste is grainy, almost doughy caramel/toffee malt, bitter cafe-au-lait, peppy domestic fruit (grapefruit, orange, and peach), some gentle flinty chalkiness, an increasingly acrid piney, leafy, and herbal hoppiness, and maybe a suggestion of a hint of a wisp of metallic booze.

The carbonation is adequate in its duly supportive and sometimes frolicking frothiness, the body a stoic medium-heavy weight, and mostly smooth, just some of those awakened piney hops traipsing a little too heavily through Grandma's roses, as it were. It finishes off-dry, the base roasted malt reminding everyone that there's two (or maybe three) sides to the equation here.

Credit where credit is due, is the first summary thought that comes to me in regards to 30¢ (other than it is less fun to say with an Ebonics accent than 50¢). Very well made, and particularly targeted to this doubter of the validity of the style - the roast is there, sure, but it knows enough to keep in the background, and let the base IPA run rampant. Je l'aime beaucoup!

Pitch black with a big creamy head. Smells of fresh hops, oranges citrus, pineapples, grapefruits, quite surprising for a black IPA. Nice hoppy taste in the mouth also with a nice espresso and dark chocolate aftertaste. Nice bitterness that stays with you for a while. Probably one of the most hoppy Black IPA I've taste, really fantastic.

A-nice black colour with an off white head
S-there is a 'fresh' hop aroma, perhaps Cascade...it's almost soapy
M-a little thick for my liking, although the black IPA GENRE is somewhat of a mystery for me
T-it seems to be battling with the identity of an IPA and a porter of some sort, I don't like this confusion as it makes me want both
O-I wanted to like this more than I did, I was not overly impressed and to be honest expected more from Le Castor which I am a huge fan! Forget this and drink a Yakima IPA

A: Damn this one looks good. Pours clear dark brown color with a light beige head. Tons of lacing and retention is very very good too.

S: Lots of citruses, mangoes, very ripe pineapples and anises. It surprisingly all blends together very well. There is a soft malt base with sweet notes of candi sugar and light roasted notes.

T: That's where the beer really falls apart. In the nose, everything made sense and there was a kind of synergy. Now it's all over the place. You get real bitter chalky notes with strong anise. There is a light amount of citruses, but not enough to balance the chalkiness of the beer. There are roasted notes, but again, they don't feel right with the rest of the beer.

M: Medium body, quite sticky. Ok for the style but I would have preferred something rounder.

O: This is a decent beer. It's a nice experience from these breweries, but they will need to work on their recipes.

EDIT: Maybe this beer would be much better if it would be aged.
