Notes: New Zealand isn’t just famous for its Maori culture, rugby team, and a cute little flightless bird. To beer lovers – it’s revered for its unique hop varieties. This beer is a marriage between the fruitiness of the New Zealand hops, and the floral character of the saison yeast strain.

Bottle: Poured a hazy yellow color ale with a nice pure white foamy head with good retention and light lacing notes. Aroma of light tropical fruit notes with dry hoppy notes is quite interesting. Taste is a nice mix of light rustic malt notes with some floral hoppy notes with light white wine/tropical fruit notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Very well brewed and quite enjoyable overall even though hops oil notes could be more pronounced.

Bottle smuggled back from the country of Quebec.
Lively deep golden color with a huge stream of carbonation bubbles below a huge tightly bubbled white head. Earthy light funk with citrus and tropical fruitiness. Hints of pepper and a touch of alcohol round us out. Lingering spicy bitterness. Tasty brew, but somewhat heavy on the peppery spice or maybe thats hop bitterness its kind of blurry.

660ml bottle (what is it with these non-standard packaging sizes lately?), made with unspecified New Zealand hops (except for in the title, I guess!).

This beer pours a slightly hazy, pale golden yellow colour, with a teeming tower of puffy, rocky, and chunky off-white head, which leaves some sudsy neural net lace around the glass as it very slowly sinks away.

It smells of muffled tropical fruit (musty pineapple, mango, and kiwi), kind of funky Saison yeast, a gritty hard water flintiness, simple breakfast cereal malts, and further leafy, weedy, and floral green hop bitters. The taste is bready and crackery pale malt, a mixed bag of other graininess, kind of astringent and mildly phenolic yeast, very hard to parse domestic citrus and more exotic fruity notes, a hint of white chalk, and more plain leafy, herbal, and dead floral verdant hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly active in its palate-enveloping frothiness, the body a solid medium weight, and more or less smooth, once that yeasty character is obviated by my handy-dandy cognitive dissonance generator. It finishes off-dry, but not by much, as the fruitiness re-emerges, to go along with the lingering yeasty and bitter hop essences.

Overall, this is an agreeable enough hopped-up Saison, with the south-seas hop flavours perhaps getting just a bit too muddled to really give the native yeast a run for its money. At any rate, an interesting brew, and easy to drink, once the proper adjustments are made, as noted.

A clear-golden color with some carbonation and a nice white head. Smells of hops, citrus, earthy yeast. Really smooth taste with a nice bitterness. Kinda spicy too, with a nice carbonation in the mouth. Really a nice saison!

Quite good. Lots of tropical fruit, mild bitterness, wheat and lemon. The hops are tropical as expected from something populated by New Zealand varietals, although I don't get a tonne of Nelson. Yeast gives it a slightly dry flavour. Nice.

Appearance - Pours a cloudy pale straw with three fingers of foamy white head.

Smell - belgian (spicy, floral) yeast, hint of tropical hops, and biscuity malts.

Taste - Hit with the spicy and floral yeast character upfront, then the tropical Rakau hops sweep in and linger into the aftertaste. Biscuity malts provide a solid backbone to support these strong flavours.

Mouthfeel - Medium body with moderate-to-high carbonation. Finishes crisp and dry with lingering hop bitterness.

Overall - This beer does a great job at balancing two very prominent flavour profiles: spicy/floral saison yeast and tropical Rakau hops. It would be easy for one to dominate over the other, but in this case, they are extremely well played. I've missed those NZ hops, so it's wonderful to see a Canadian brewery using them.

A: slightly hazy dark yellow to light amber. Head is moderate, retention is fair, with just traces of lace. S: some bread, light traces of pepper, some kiwi. T: some lychee and tropical fruit, star fruit with a substantially dry finish. M: pretty light bodied and medium low carbonation. O: very solid. A nice fruity well hopped saison.

Service: Bottle
Bottled on: Mid-May 2015

A:
Pours a cloudy white-gold with a fluffy bright white head that is pretty effervescent and lingers at a film. Okay retention; some lacing. (3.75)

S:
Saison yeast and pez. Warm doughiness, wet grass, smarties, a rising tartness, tropical fruits. (3.75)

T:
White tea and hard lemon water. Simple, wet-feeling, dough, chalk, unripe mango, hard candy, tea-like astringency(?)--or something it had a definite tea drying/puckering quality to it (not to a fault though IMO), clover. (3.75)

M:
Tingly and light+ bodied with a smooth finish, medium or lower carbonation. (3.75)

O:
A decent beer on the whole.
A pretty tasty saison, the beer is not as dry as some, doughier than some, and sweeter than more than a few. It pours nice enough and has a really bright nose. Lots of candi sugar and citrus oil/tropical scents and flavors. It is sweet but not overly so, very clean. There is a little green/herbalish hoppiness in it, but it isn't at the front. I assume that a bit of the pez comes from the hops, too, but I don't know.
I's only real problem is that it just tastes a little hollow to me. Like it could just use a nudge in some direction to be great. That is certainly not to say that it is bad, though. Overall it is a fine beer.
I might have it again; take it or leave it but don't turn it down if offered to you. (3.75)
