A weaponized quantity of freshly roasted whole bean coffee from Dark Matter Coffee Roasters imbues our Deth’s Tar Barrel-Aged Imperial Oatmeal Stout with assertive coffee aromatics without overshadowing the base beer on the palate. Pair with rich food or enjoy on its own. Keep cold. Enjoy now. We mean it.

L: Pours a thick oily black color with a small tan head and no lacing on the glass

T: Stronger bourbon and vanilla mix with chocolate and coffee, sweet but not overly sweet. Makes a very nice dessert

My original review was deleted in 2025 by accident.
My first try at this. Mixed reviews on BA. Right off the front lots of fudge and bourbon aromas. Minimal coffee. Then on the flavor lots of chocolate and fudge sweetness while the bourbon doesn't overpower and sits back. Again, minimal coffee roast. Creamy oat malt and sweetness. Thick, rich, and heavy.
I'm still learning BBA stouts, but these thick and rich supra 13%ers seem to all drink so heavy, rich, and sweet. Hard to appreciate much past the sweetness here. Not trying to be harsh, but I do think the sweetness overpowers.

12-ounce can purchased at Noble Hop Bierhaus in Hillsboro, OR. Date stamp reads "FILLED: 09/17/25". Enjoyed in a Fort George Lupulin Ecstasy Festival tasting glass.
Look:
Light-destroying black body with a fluffy head of fawn colored foam. Strong backlighting from my phone flashlight reveals no details in these inky depths. The edges grudgingly allow that the beer is brown-black with burnt orange highlights.
Smell:
The nose is more milk and dark chocolate than coffee, although more coffee comes through as the beer warms. Plenty of bourbon in there too, along with dark chocolate-covered cherries, wet earth, caramel, vanilla, and alcohol.
Taste:
The flavor starts off brown sugar sweet, with a few dark chocolate sprinkles for interest. Fortunately, it gets more interesting right after that. There's coffee, with bright and somewhat fruity notes above a nice roasty base. There's dark chocolate, toffee, vanilla, a whiff of smoke, and a trace of dark red chile powder. There are cherries, a bit of raisin, and a few fragments of dates. And there is plenty of bourbon.
Feel:
The body is medium-full with a plush texture and appealing carbonation. There's some alcohol warmth but less than you might expect from a beer that's nearly 15%.
Overall:
Cafe Deth is a tasty barrel-aged coffee imperial stout with marvelous texture, good depth of flavor, and a satisfying amount of bourbon barrel character. Unfortunately, all of these attributes are not quite enough to distract from the immense sweetness. It is a good BA coffee stout but not a great one.

(review from Jan. 2024) Javaheads rejoice! Canned 10/23 & still has great mouthfeel; a well balanced bourbony/coffee/malty/roasty/slightly burnt flavor; a lovely lingering aftertaste & a strong but smooth fooler of a 14.8%er! Must've been phenomenal when fresh!

A: opaque; very dark brown - almost black; finger finely pored medium brown head that receded to a very thin collar; light lacing;
S: bittersweet chocolate is predominant with coffee and vanilla clearly in the background;
T: bittersweet chocolate and vanilla from start to finish; coffee in the background; nicely balanced moderate bitterness at the end;
M: full bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish that continues drying out through the aftertaste; alcohol is warming, but not hot;
O: a really nice sipper;

L - pitch black with no real head to speak of
S - tons of charred oak, roasted coffee, dark chocolate. Rich bourbon
T - follows the nose - rich dark chocolate and charred oak up front and throughout intermixed well with rich, roasted coffee. Caramel, toffee, molasses. The bourbon notes are rich and woody. The wood notes and very deep and definitely set this BBA stout apart. Some vanilla as well.
F - full bodied with light carbonation. Smooth
O - Pretty well done BBA stout with a ton of coffee flavor

Pour revealed an awesome foaming cocoa head that dissipated leaving a thinner than expected beer in its wake. Flavors were strongly inspired by RIS style notes with much more dark fruit than I'd have thought would be there for a coffee stout. Speaking of coffee, I did not detect much while bourbon blended well with the RIS nature of this beer. Overall good but flawed in multiple areas

Another amazing barrel-aged beer from Revolution. Black color, one finger thick, beige head. Coffee, roasted malt, and mild bourbon in the aroma. Coffee in taste. Warming alcohol at the end.

2022 12 Oz can. Beautiful black chocolaty smooth silky bourbon laced mocha goodness. Very drinkable considering high abv. Totally justifies $8 per can price.
