A 500ml bottle with a BB of May 2013. Picked up recently from the York Wine & Beer shop. York's newest brewery has a few offerings, of which this is one. A 'contemporary fine ale'....

Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A golden-amber hue with faint haze and very low carbonation. Forms a decent head of white foam that lasts for a couple of minutes before collapsing. Aroma of fruity aromatic hops; grapefruit, citrus and tropical fruits abound. Underpinned by grainy caramel malt and earthy yeast. A superb blend.

Tastes of grainy malt with an aromatic hop character and a crisp bitter finish. Notes of grapefruit, citrus, tropical fruit, grain, dry yeast and mild stewed hops. A restrained bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is light, dry and spicy. Quite astringent. Aftertaste of fruity aromatic hops and subtle bitterness.

Nice. A well-balanced ale; the malt, yeast and hop flavours all make themselves known without drowning each other out. Delicious aromatic hop notes. This is what every English bitter should aspire to be. I'd say that it bodes well for such a young brewery - if they can keep producing beers that punch above their weight then success will surely follow. Grab one if you have the chance.
