Orange-like citrus, juicy grapefruit, lime, and a subtle presence of melon sets the aromatic backdrop for this brew. In typically West Coast fashion, the hefty C-hop foundation is accentuated by the more tropical flavors of passion fruit, papaya, and a slight bit of mango. Hints of a floral character surface toward the back end alongside some malty notes of biscuit and grains.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The palate is probably where this becomes more decidedly LA than anything else; where West Coast IPAs of yore used to captivate imaginations with gargantuan and bold bitter flavors, Hello, LA takes a step back to "chill" and opts for a more balanced approach.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The nose is well-matched on the palate with generous servings of citrus, grapefruit peels, and melon taking center stage. The tropical fruits make a brief cameo before making way for a resinous, dry pine punch -- not quite dank, but there's just enough bitterness to make you want to take a step back and just kick it for a bit.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The mouthfeel starts off a little creamy, but gives way to an almost Pale Ale-like medium body with gentle, simmering carbonation. I'd dare say this is quite perfect for the often-unforgiving but perpetually bright and sunny Los Angeles weather.

Another great IPA from these guys. I prefer this one over the Neon and Bonkers IPA.
An excellent balance between the Citra & Mosaic hops without two much malt. Hop forward, yet easy drinking, with a dry and crisp finish.

Straight pour from a 16oz can to a tall, narrow pint (Green Cheek nucleated flute). This was, according to a small paper tag on the four-pack holder, canned on May 4, 2016, which would make this beer 14 days old at the time of consumption. It’s been refrigerated since picking it up at the brewery. Psyched!

Appearance (4.0): This pours out four fingers of fairly eager foam, custard colored, capping a crystal clear, rich golden colored body. The head starts off pretty crackly, but somehow doesn’t dissipate as fast as I was expecting. It dies down eventually to leave a bizarre scaffolding of meringue-like cobwebs and clumps, a mixture of fine and fat, crackly bubbles. The body is gorgeous, the head is attractive if a bit enigmatic, and overall it’s quite pretty.

Smell (4.0): In the nose, this beer is clean and bright, redolent with berry and navel orange aromas, along with subtle grass and cannabis notes. As it opens up, the hops are dominated by bright citrus zest—and a light floral note. The malt comes through with crisp, lightly toasted country bread and a touch of light toffee. No booze. It’s very nice set up here.

Taste (4.0): Once again, it’s clean and crisp and West Coast and lovely. The hops are dominated mostly by bright, floral bitterness and soft citrus sweetness in the background, which mingles with the malt. And, that malt: rustic multigrain toasted just lightly, Ryvita, and whole wheat biscuits. The malt component is clean, but fairly soft—not as firm and crisp as I was expecting. But, it still acts as a nice counterpart to the bright, floral, citrusy hop bitterness and flavor. That said, there’s a very nice, soft hop flavor component here that’s juicy, showing a hint of orange marmalade, apricot flesh, and edible flowers. No booze.

Mouthfeel (4.25): Not to sound like a broken record, but it’s simultaneously clean and crisp, but also soft and swishy. The body is just a bit shy of medium-weight, coming in with a carbonation that spreads itself over your tongue very evenly , with a moderately coarse texture. It foams up softly as it washes out. No booze. Not too bitter, it dries out the palate well enough, while leaving a soft, dry carbonation that begs for the next sip.

Overall (3.75): Everything going on here is pretty solid, but it’s missing the “oomph” that you should be able to expect from a Mosaic- and Citra- driven West Coast (D)IPA. Still, it’s quite tasty. Compare this to, say, Beachwood’s Amalgamator. Except Amalgamator is much better, in my opinion. And regularly released. And cheaper. Still, I like everything that’s going on here, and it is different from your run of the mill West Coast IPA. It’s like a soft, floral- and citrus-driven, super clean IPA. I’m glad I tried it. Still, I can’t help but feel like Highland Park is capable of quite a bit more.
