DATE: February 10, 2017... OCCASION: playing the second game of Monopoly with the family after seeing Mom in the hospital... GLASSWARE: Celebrator doppelbock... dark amber, almost mahogany body with diminutive bubbles... head is off-white, marshy, with swirls of dark spots and bubble pockets.. chocolate, caramel malts, some small citrus hints, and peat at its end... a creamy, smooth body burns with phenol at the throat... chocolate, yes, with the caramel and dough that is also toasted and bold in its assertiveness... a solid, unspectacular offering that could use more--chocolate, caramel, strength, smoothness, etc.--to solidify itself in my memory... I do like the name and the brewery, so I will try other styles of theirs; this one is a safe version of the style...

Poured into a narrow glass: color is brown, clearer on the edges, head is light tan with fine bubbles and presents about 1/2 inch thick then dissipates ring.
Smell is subtley fruity, grape like, touches of cocoa and munich malts.
Taste is similarly lightly fruity, then munich malt, soft feel, to sweeter chocolate malt and cocoa. I would characterize it as as sweet doppelbock flavor, extra chocolate malt and the cocoa addition. The higher strength is really hidden well with the moderate sweetness.
Mouthfeel starts a bit sharp and crisp when cold, but the warmth really helps it soften up with some fuller flavor on the tongue but a dry finish, possibly from the hidden strength of this brew.
This brew started a bit disjointed, but the warmth softened the flavors and allowed me to notice the subtler attributes - softer mouthfeel, hidden strenghth and light cocoa. Great strong lager with a hint of sweetness.

Susquehanna Brewing Company "Toboggan"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, no apparent freshness dating but marked "051116"
There is no alcohol content listed on the label although their website lists it as 8.7% with 25 IBUs
Appearance: Clear, mahogany brown body. Finger-thick head of creamy yellowed off-white foam. Both the head retention and the lacing are very good.
Aroma: Soft fruit. A hint of nuttiness, caramel, and toastiness.
Flavor: As the aroma suggests. There's some mild chocolate to it, but if you didn't already know that cocoa had been added I'd doubt you'd note it as particularly "chocolatey". As it warms however, it does become more apparent, and it takes on a kind of chocolate covered raisin character. Faint herbal hops back it, and it finishes soft and smooth with just a mild bit of sweetish malt and dark-skinned fruit lingering.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and silky smooth.
Overall: Really quite charming. It's a bit sweetish and fruity, and thus a bit of a sipper, but at 8.7% ABV perhaps that's not a bad thing. I see it as a great beer to sit back and relax with rather than something you'd order at the bar when out with the guys. It's really quite unique, and although it's not that complex I find it intriguing. I keep a running list of fall and winter beers to pull out after holiday celebrations and get-togethers, and this will certainly be on my list for next year.
