The beer pours a beautiful gold color with a thick frothy white head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a light, crisp malt scent that boasts mostly of pale malts. It provides an adequate base, but not much complexity. The hop aroma is mild at best. It has a tame bitter aroma, especially for an American IPA. The taste is decent as well. It's easy drinking with just a mild hop character. It's bitter up front with a solid pale malt balance. It's bone dry and balanced. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a medium bodied beer with adequate/good carbonation. This is a good drinker, but not a very interesting IPA.

DATE: July 13, 2017... OCCASION: first (and last) episode of "Will"... GLASSWARE: Howard's Pub pint... pours a tawny, straw-colored body with sparse bubbles discernible through haziness... head is off-white, creamy, and thin, with enough arcs to intrigue the eye... straight-up lemon, soft grapefruit, pepper, biscuit malts, and pine... rather subtle for strength of five hops... slightly creamy, crisp at the lips, with a smooth finish... drinkable, yes, and speedily so... orange peel, lemon, grapefruit, bitter herbs, slight pine, and a bit of cracker makes for an easy-drinking, piney finish... a beer that offers a bit of bitterness with its fruitiness... a bit distant in its impact, but I would not fault it for its drinkability...

Susquehanna Brewing Co. "Hopfive IPA"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle without freshness dating
$2 @ Wegmans, State College, PA

Look: Hazy golden body beneath a finger-thick head of bright white foam that holds quite well and leaves some very nice lacing behind.

Smell: Brightly floral, gently spicy, and lightly piney over a delicately sweetish malt base.

Taste: As the nose suggests but more peppery, and somewhat fruity, perhaps a little berry-like - with the spiciness it seems almost like Juniper berry. The biscuity malt is just lightly caramelish but offers enough depth to balance the hops. A very firm bitterness of around 50 IBUs balances it, and along with the spiciness of the hops it finishes dry, spicy, earthy, piney, and woody.

Feel: Medium-light in body and delicately bristling with a fine-bubbled, seemingly natural, median carbonation.

Overall: At the very least it's unique with spicy hops rather than citrusy or tropical and/or whatever's hot at the moment. It's also not that 'spicy and piney with a bite' kind of IPA that generally relies heavily on Chinook, no this is really quite different, it's much more refined. It's also really well balanced, and quite drinkable - at 6.0% ABV it's not that strong, just .4 above Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and towards the bottom of the range for American IPAs, but it's about the malt and hop flavors and it works. Really well done! Worth trying.

3/20....pours dark bronze with high while foam. Fizzes and sticks. Sediment. Malty with a hint of citrus/soapy grasses. Sweet yeasty bitter taste, lemon flavor. Malt backed. Short, sweet, simple. Average IPA.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a dark golden color with a 1 inch head. Lots of lacing here. Smell is kind of mild, some hops. Taste is is hops, some pine, bitterness, but not a great deal of it, a bit subdued. Feels light in the mouth and overall, whie not bad, just seems to be lacking for the style.
