Pours a completely clear gold with a white head. Smells of sweet malt. Tastes of very sweet malts and bread. Medium-light and crisp body with medium high carbonation. Overall one of the best Japanese lagers that I've had, but still nothing incredible.

22 oz bottle @ Shogun 22 in Green Brook, NJ.

Pale gold color with good clarity and a tiny white head. Corny and grainy aroma, even though the bottle says "100% Malt" on the front. Sweet pilsner malt flavor but overall it's very dull and unexciting. Light bodied and fizzy. Good for washing down hibachi with.

This beer pours a typical amber color for a lager. A nice white finger of head, very little lacing on the glass. It is a very easy drinking beer, however it is just as bland as many others.

25 oz. can poured into a narrow goblet at a Japanese Steakhouse.

Clear and yellow with almost one inch of white foam that is a little sticky. The nose and flavor are super malty.
The first sip finished with a ton of corn which was a bit off putting. This wasn't the case on any of the following drinks allowing me to enjoy the sweet but clean malty goodness. Crisp and refreshing the finish is somewhat dry.

This was way better than expected.

Pours a clear yellow with short lived head, resolving to faint lacing.
Smell is sweet corn malt.
Taste is grassy and sweet.
Quite smooth and refreshing.

L: brilliant straw gold with rapidly rising bubbles blanketed by 1" of foam with fair to moderate retention

S: medium low aromas start with a light scent of sulfur which passes quickly followed by faint fruit and light cracker

T: flavors start slightly sweet with light apple, a trace of spice, some cracker and a clean bitterness just before the swallow.

F: body is light and the carbonation is medium high

O: drinkable with a trace of flavor and a hint of character

In some ways I don't get the low ratings this beer gets. Sure in The States we get a AB version and I'm pretty certain it looses something in the translation. But, this is kind of a benchmark taste beer for what I deem a pilsner. It isn't to ready or, worse, corn tasting. It might benefit if it had just a bit of hoppy bite for many, but then it wouldn't be the benchmark of a very clean yet still fairly full-tasting brew. It's got a sweetness up front and it finishes dry and clean and in the middle is about the most classic beer taste I can distill from almost 40-years of drinking beer. I'll qualify this by saying I'd rather most of the times be drinking a Guiness Stout or an Anchor Steam Porter. That said these beers have diminishing returns quite early on due to their extreme sweet, dark, and bitter profiles (sounds pretty good doesn't it). This one is a clean light yet flavorful brew that drinking a sixer on a hot southern evening just is far too easy. Yeah, I'd like to compare it to the real Japanese version, but since I can't I'll just say this beer doesn't get the joy it deserves. I absolutely love the clean finish which makes the next sip that much easier. For me it's a refreshing brew after a hot day and in that simple task it fulfills it well.

Pretty basic stuff here. Has a decent smell but has an unnatural bittterness on the finish. Wouldn't buy again.
