Complex notes of toffee and vanilla lure you in, with a roasty-toasty, malt-forward body burly enough to un-shiver those timbers. Smooth, assertive, and nearly ‘Navy strength,’ this seaworthy and spirited brew is a bold character to be reckoned with.

Served from a 750mL bottle into a snifter.

Viscous and oily in color and appearance, a chewy cappuccino-frothy head forms. It's substantial in height and mass and lingers for quite some time over the oil slick body. Beautiful. 5

Barrel-heavy aroma offers oak, fresh tobacco, sweet vanilla and caramel. Light bourbon notes and faint booze and chocolate. Maybe too much barrel aroma and not enough base beer but it smells great. 4.25

The barrel presence is pronounced on the palate, giving the tobacco, oak and bourbon-y spice the nose had. There's also a noticeable sweet and sugary flavor that is in fact subtler than the booze and barrels. The finish especially lingers with the earthy taste of barrels and cane sugar. The deeper I get into this beer the more it starts tasting if coconut. 4.25

Smooth, creamy and medium- to heavy-bodied mouthfeel with a slightly residual sweetness feel. The booze can feel potent or mellow from sip to sip but never becomes offensive. 4.25

Just a day earlier I ran through a number of BA beers with friends, many which had big-time hype or world-class reputations, and this tastes on par with the best of those.

This opaque and dark brown beer has a rich creamy head that stays for quite a while and leaves an impressive sheet of lacing behind. Scents of chocolate, coffee, rum, wet oak, vanilla and roasted malt fill the air above the beer. The thick, viscous, creamy and carbonated liquid tastes like sweet char with with rum, oak, dark chocolate and vanilla as it makes its way to the throat. Once gone it leaves a chocolatey sweetness and some bitter char. The bitterness overtakes the sweet and a nice warming from the rum finishes the experience. Gotta say this is a damn good beer that makes me wish for more rum barrel aged brews.

L - Opaque silky black, with a tan half inch head that lingers
S - Smells of dark chocolate and vanilla
T - Taste is a touch of sweet chocolate and a gentle heat from the rum barrel
F - Large bodied with a slight chalky feel
O - Very interesting and enjoyable take on an imperial stout. The rum barrels add a sweet heat that offsets the sweet chocolate taste.

Seems like they tweaked the recipe in 2014, and the results are pretty amazing. Don't think there was a better imperial stout produced in Minnesota last year, including Darkness and Silhouette. The rum this stout picked up really just adds an intense, deliciousness.

Appearance: incredibly dark coloring, richly roasted brown head, lasting long, leaving lace, looking beautiful.

Aroma: screams out of the glass, all manner of dark, delicious aromatics, and that's from looming over it, not getting in close for a sniff. Very tempting…here I go…maple, charcoal, anise, and, hey, how about some rum, too? Deep stuff, dark and rich and definitely decadent. We're still just smelling, here.

Taste: Ah! Oh, yeah, I meant to say it, …AH! It's got it all, and so much more. Really rich, dense and deep, just so sweet. Fullness of body, longness of length, finish with no finality. Intense is a word, and it's apt and then some. Bee-yoo-tiful.

Whiskey and bourbon-barrel-aged imperial stouts are well known and legendary, but rum barrel-aged? Not quite so much. This is kind of amazing. It's ridiculously intense, incredible, rich and rewarding. Love. It.

This is easily one of the best smelling rum barrel aged imperial stouts I have ever had, I just wish the taste followed the smell. The taste was a little lacking in mouthfeel and even had a slight metallic taste. This was a good beer overall

Great beer, tons and tons of rum. A bit light on the mouthfeel and mixed with the rum flavors and the heat from the alcohol definitely didn't finish the bottle on my own. But with a couple friends it was a joy and different enough to make it exciting. If you like rum BA beers definitely seek this out.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Snifter.

Appearance: Black with billowing brown head that lingers.

Smell: Molasses, semi-sweet chocolate, vanilla and oak. Definitely can smell the rum barrel aging.

Taste: Lots of molasses and oak, with lighter notes of chocolate, char and vanilla. There was a harsh, burnt and charred aftertaste at first, and then which I noticed again after pouring the second half. It seems to be due to the colder temperature, even though it was cellar temp (55). Once it got closer to room temperature, it improved.

Feel: Full body with carbonation in check. Semi-dry finish. Smooth and silky and oddly easy drinking.

Overall: Great beer overall, and the use of rum barrels is different and noticeable.

Can poured into stout glass. Rich, dark viscous look with a nice creamy head. Rum, dark malts, chocolate and hint of vanilla greet the nose. Full, thick feel with rum, dark chocolate coating the palate. Bitterness slightly overtakes the sweet, but this is a very nice winter beer.

Had on tap at the Pig & Fiddle L: It pours deep bright dark brown with a thin, quickly dissipating foam cap.

S: Smells like rum, dark dried fruit with traces of molasses.

T: Has a big malty, rummy palate with figs, dark fruit, traces of molasses, and hints of chocolate and coffee and a mild bitterness. The rum and malt are high, the fruit flavors are medium high, the hop flavors are low and the hop bitterness is medium low.

F: Very smooth and creamy with much less alcohol heat than you would expect. Has a big full body and medium low carbonation.

O: One of the nicer things done with a rum barrel in a very long time.

Poured from a waxed 750 ml bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice.

Appearance: Pours pitch black with a moderate amount of bubbles. Big two finger tan head which slowly fades into a thinner creamy layer. Leaves some good lacing.

Smell: A rich, roasty, and sweet dark malt driven aroma with good hints of chocolate, coffee, and rum. Dark roasted barley malt with big hints of dark chocolate, coffee, cream, vanilla, toast, biscuit, caramel, toffee, oats, and yeast. Sweet hints of molasses and cane sugar. Solid barrel presence with fairly boozy hints of rum, wood, and oak. Spice hints of anise, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Dark fruit hints of raisin, prune, and fig. Hops are pretty light. A very good smell.

Taste: Like the smell hints at, a nicely rich, roasty, and sweet dark malt forward taste with notes of chocolate, coffee, rum, and fruit. Dark roasted barley malt with good notes of dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, cream, toasted bread, biscuit, toffee, caramel, oats, and yeast. Good barrel notes of rum, oak, and wood. Sweet taste of cane sugar and molasses. Notes of anise licorice along with some light nutmeg and cinnamon. Dark fruit undertones with notes of fig, raisin, cherry, and prune. Subtle earthy hops in the background. A very good taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy, slick, and somewhat syrupy. Some booze heat is felt but it feels smoother than expected.

Overall: A great spin on a barrel aged stout. The rum barrel and sugar add a good kick without making things a boozy, overly sweet mess. Rich and nicely refined.
