Complex notes of toffee and vanilla lure you in, with a roasty-toasty, malt-forward body burly enough to un-shiver those timbers. Smooth, assertive, and nearly ‘Navy strength,’ this seaworthy and spirited brew is a bold character to be reckoned with.

This opaque and dark brown beer has a rich creamy head that stays for quite a while and leaves an impressive sheet of lacing behind. Scents of chocolate, coffee, rum, wet oak, vanilla and roasted malt fill the air above the beer. The thick, viscous, creamy and carbonated liquid tastes like sweet char with with rum, oak, dark chocolate and vanilla as it makes its way to the throat. Once gone it leaves a chocolatey sweetness and some bitter char. The bitterness overtakes the sweet and a nice warming from the rum finishes the experience. Gotta say this is a damn good beer that makes me wish for more rum barrel aged brews.

Served from a 750mL bottle into a snifter.

Viscous and oily in color and appearance, a chewy cappuccino-frothy head forms. It's substantial in height and mass and lingers for quite some time over the oil slick body. Beautiful. 5

Barrel-heavy aroma offers oak, fresh tobacco, sweet vanilla and caramel. Light bourbon notes and faint booze and chocolate. Maybe too much barrel aroma and not enough base beer but it smells great. 4.25

The barrel presence is pronounced on the palate, giving the tobacco, oak and bourbon-y spice the nose had. There's also a noticeable sweet and sugary flavor that is in fact subtler than the booze and barrels. The finish especially lingers with the earthy taste of barrels and cane sugar. The deeper I get into this beer the more it starts tasting if coconut. 4.25

Smooth, creamy and medium- to heavy-bodied mouthfeel with a slightly residual sweetness feel. The booze can feel potent or mellow from sip to sip but never becomes offensive. 4.25

Just a day earlier I ran through a number of BA beers with friends, many which had big-time hype or world-class reputations, and this tastes on par with the best of those.

L - Opaque silky black, with a tan half inch head that lingers
S - Smells of dark chocolate and vanilla
T - Taste is a touch of sweet chocolate and a gentle heat from the rum barrel
F - Large bodied with a slight chalky feel
O - Very interesting and enjoyable take on an imperial stout. The rum barrels add a sweet heat that offsets the sweet chocolate taste.

Poured from 12oz can into glass. Bottom of can is stamped for canning date as '09/06/16 CELLAR UP TO 2 YRS'.
Very nearly opaque black body. Frothy tan head. Strings of lacing left behind.
Lots of rum notes in the aroma, along with dark, roasty malts.
Also lots of rum notes in the taste, along with toffee, chocolate, vanilla, and chalky roasted malts. Has a red wine vibe.
Smooth, silky, coating mouth feel.
There is current discussion that 'Rum King' does not age well, and is showing signs of infection, both for the 2016 and 2017 production. To me this can is more subdued than what I have had from taps at the tap room, but it is still drinkable. The vanilla seems to have smoothed out some of the harsher rum barrel notes. Certainly is not a real barrel aged powerhouse of an imperial stout.

I drank another of the '09/06/16' (for canning date) beers today. All of the aroma and taste components are still there but the rum barrel has mellowed out some, making for a very smooth sipper. The taste is quite sweet, but this does not make the beer undrinkable.

Appearance: incredibly dark coloring, richly roasted brown head, lasting long, leaving lace, looking beautiful.

Aroma: screams out of the glass, all manner of dark, delicious aromatics, and that's from looming over it, not getting in close for a sniff. Very tempting…here I go…maple, charcoal, anise, and, hey, how about some rum, too? Deep stuff, dark and rich and definitely decadent. We're still just smelling, here.

Taste: Ah! Oh, yeah, I meant to say it, …AH! It's got it all, and so much more. Really rich, dense and deep, just so sweet. Fullness of body, longness of length, finish with no finality. Intense is a word, and it's apt and then some. Bee-yoo-tiful.

Whiskey and bourbon-barrel-aged imperial stouts are well known and legendary, but rum barrel-aged? Not quite so much. This is kind of amazing. It's ridiculously intense, incredible, rich and rewarding. Love. It.

Seems like they tweaked the recipe in 2014, and the results are pretty amazing. Don't think there was a better imperial stout produced in Minnesota last year, including Darkness and Silhouette. The rum this stout picked up really just adds an intense, deliciousness.
