Original review from 2012 750ml bottling. Edits for 2013 canning at the bottom.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Very dark ruby with nice tan head and respectable lacing.

Smell: Sweet and fruity, with plum, figs, cherry and raisins. Caramel and spicy, floral notes as well.

Taste: Sweet core of caramel and dark fruits. Hard to identify everything going on here. While raisins may be present, I am getting more plums and cherry. Despite the low IBUs, I am getting some definite floral and spicy notes on the finish from the hops. Definitely not bitter though.

Feel: Medium to full body with light but lively carbonation. Fairly smooth overall, and the finish has a surprising amount of dryness.

Overall: I was a little scared of this beer, as with the low IBUs and the addition of raisins and brown sugar, I was expecting a really cloying beer. This is not cloying at all. While it is fairly sweet, it has a nice balance and strong drinkability. Impressive.

Edit for 2016 canning: Much more chocolate in the aroma and taste, maybe a little more chocolate than I would prefer, which begins to bother me about halfway through the can. The addition of vanilla is more subtle in the aroma, but provides a nice extra finish to the beer that I like. I liked it better before, and my average dropped from a 4.3 to a 4.0, but still very nice.

Had this on tap at the Red Stag.
L: Bright brown under a 1” moussey tan foam cap that hugs the side of the glass. S: chocolate, vanilla, dried fruit aromas.
T: Light roast, chocolate, vanilla, dried fruit, a hint of coffee. No harsh or burnt flavors.
F: Medium to medium full body, medium carbonation, very soft in the mouth.
O: A good beer to drink while sitting by the fire.

Poured from a 12 oz. can into an Indeed shaker glass. Canned on 11/03/13.

Appearance: Pours a dark brownish black with a hint of amber. Moderate amount of bubbles and one finger of light tan head that fades into a thin creamy layer. Leaves a decent amount of lacing on the glass.

Smell: A sweet and roasty malt driven aroma with good dark hints of chocolate and dark fruit. Dark roasted malts with hints of cocoa nibs, mild roast coffee, milk, biscuit, grains, toast, caramel, toffee, and yeast. Sweet hints of creamy vanilla and brown sugar. Dark fruit hints of raisins and fig. Mild hints of cinnamon and nutmeg spicing. Hops are very laid back. A pretty good aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma, a sweet and roasty dark malt driven taste with nice notes of chocolate and dark fruit. Upfront dark roasted barley malt with notes of cocoa nibs, coffee roast, caramel, toffee, lactose, cream, toast, biscuit, grains, and yeast. Sweet taste of vanilla and brown sugar. Dark fruit presence with notes of raisins, fig, and plum. Light notes of cinnamon and nutmeg spice. Subtle earthy hop presence in the background. A pretty good taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very creamy, silky, and smooth. Sweet but far from cloying.

Overall: A very good spin on a Winter beer. Its more like a twist on a Milk/Sweet Stout than the typical Winter Warmer. Good creamy chocolate taste with a nice dark fruit undertone.

A-Black, when held up to light more dark brown
S-Not much there, but a little chocolate and raisin
T- A lot of chocolate and dark fruit, very enjoyable. Surprising after light aroma. Little to no hop flavor (as expected) and just a little tiny bit of hop bitterness. About equal bitterness of a piece of mild dark chocolate.
M-Medium-full bodied, nice mellow carbonation.
O- Really like it, packed with chocolate and raisin/dark cherry flavor.
