Pours a dark brown in color. So dark that it resembles a black ale / black IPA. Dark tan head with a nice bit of lace gives it the look of a moody, mysterious beer, but for some there's a definite appeal in a beer cast with an overall dark and foreboding visage.

Something acrid about the nose . . . iodine? Sulfur? Smoke? On my last go-round with this beer it was all cocoa and toffee notes up front, and there's some of that here, but it's muted. Lightly sweet malt character, nothing in the way of hops aside from maybe some sharp bitterness poking through the murk.

Sweet and a touch bittersweet on the first sip. Lingering bitter / bittersweet character, with LOTS of roast* malt character. Definitely picking up more of a modern black ale character than that of a traditional, diacetyl-prone British-styled 'winter warmer.' Notes of bitter cocoa and light espresso, but none of the toffee I recall from last year (or whenever it was that I had it last.)

Lighter mouthfeel, but in no stretch of the imagination is this a lightweight beer. The lightness of the mouthfeel definitely enhances the drinkability, and even for the somewhat weighty 6.5% this is a very drinkable beer that I can easily see sitting down to enjoy two pints of by the fireside (cue the hackneyed Currier and Ives tableau, brother!) or even at a local dive bar.

Frankly, the off-note in the nose does a lot to detract from the drinkability of this one, but hell, maybe I just got a bad batch? Shit happens, even for one of the best new (or newer at any rate) breweries in Minnesota.

That 6.5% alcohol does manage to become warming after a few sips, and it definitely improves the drinkability of this (off? maybe off?) batch example on this gloomy Saturday as new dawn fades.

If you get a chance, give it a try. It's a decent beer for what it is.

A-Black, when held up to light more dark brown
S-Not much there, but a little chocolate and raisin
T- A lot of chocolate and dark fruit, very enjoyable. Surprising after light aroma. Little to no hop flavor (as expected) and just a little tiny bit of hop bitterness. About equal bitterness of a piece of mild dark chocolate.
M-Medium-full bodied, nice mellow carbonation.
O- Really like it, packed with chocolate and raisin/dark cherry flavor.

Fairly thick head when poured. It did dissipate fairly quickly. There isn't much nose to this beer. There isn't a lot of flavor to his beer, to be honest. Somewhat of a letdown fo this type of beer.

This is a pretty good stout. Pours jet black with a nice head. Maybe too much head for style, but its not overly carbed. Smell of vanilla and chocolate. The taste is of vanilla and lactose with a hint of dark fruit. The overall body is a bit thin. A little bit of a strange aftertaste like bark of some sort or some spice. Drinkable stout. But not one I would continually buy.
