The light is good to Oatmeal Brown - what looks like a murky, bland, barrel-brown toned beer turns out to be a gorgeously gleaming and clear pecan-coloured specimen when properly highlighted. Its head is thin as a dryer sheet and has a similarly white, fleecy look.

You don't have to be a brewer to be able to tell that this was well brewed using good quality ingredients. The aroma showcases an appreciably full maltiness that is rich with toasty melanoidins and subtle caramelization. It hints at the notes of toasted nuts, confections, brittle and all the other goodies the taste has in store.

Indeed, the brewer's offered all sorts of treats: toasted hazelnuts, pecans and almonds, hard toffee candies, a spongy, chocolate-laced bundt cake, oatmeal cookies, and toasted multigrain bread. While this all may sound diabetes inducing, the beer is far from sweet! It is cautiously balanced with hints of coffee-like roast, cereal graininess, and 34 surprisingly sturdy IBUs.

This 6.28% (how oddly specific) beer is also free of anything resembling dried fruits or any kind of yeast or alcohol derived esters. Though an ale, it drinks with the spotlessly clean, super concentrated and malt-powered profile of a Vienna Lager or similarly hefty, wholesome, broad-shouldered offering. It is, for my tastes, a perfect cool weather quencher.

For such a tiny and relatively new brewpub it astounds me that Beer Academy has been able to produce such a vast array of beers with such consistency and quality. Oatmeal Brown, like the others, is not a beer that reinvents the wheel but rather seeks to perfect and spotlight the brilliance of its design. Those looking for "new" and "different" need not buy; but those who still appreciate good beer simply for being good beer will find it more than worthwhile.
