a simple and pretty good hefeweizen here, old school and rather well done, especially if you like them a little on the estery side. this is robust on the yeast side of things, maybe fermented a little warmer than is in my personal wheelhouse, but its still a really drinkable beer with great carbonation, nice dryness after a fresh wheaty middle, and enough throwback rustic elements to make it come across old worldy to me. lots of body but also lots of carbonation to keep it flowing along, it moves swiftly and is refreshing for how flavorful it is. this seems to be one of their more popular brews, we saw it all around town, at least in the beerier spots in des moines, and i think thats cool. this is a style that hasnt really stayed hot in the american craft brewing scene, which is a shame, its got a lot going on and has wide appeal, i am surprised we dont see more good ones like this out there. crisp for what it is, cool banana and spice and earthy elements from the yeast, and something i could stay on for awhile. underrated here on BA in my opinion...

Pours a hazy, golden color. One inch head of an off-white color. Great retention and decent lacing. Smells of strong wheat, slight pale malt, slight hops, hint of lemon, and slight yeast. Fits the style of a Hefeweizen. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with a high carbonation level. Tastes of strong wheat, pale malt, slight hops, slight yeast, hint of spices, and hint of citrus. Overall, decent appearance, good aroma, and decent body.

12oz bottle without a clear best by date. Poured into a hefeweizen glass 9/1/2014.

A- Hazy copper body. Looks like apple cider. Two finger white head with very good retention, but nothing close to what a German hefeweizen would look like. Leaves a thick film on the surface. Not much lacing to be seen. [3]

S- Grainy wheat and a bit of clove. Not much else. I don't get a lot of banana or bubblegum qualities from the yeast here. I'm not sure what's going on here, but this isn't impressing me very much. [2.5]

F- A bit of pale malt sweetness, some wheat, and a sharp bite of clove. As in the nose, there isn't much of banana or bubblegum that I would expect from the hefeweizen yeast. I'm not sure what kind of yeast they used, but it's not quite right. [2.75]

M- Medium body, smooth and not terribly difficult to drink. Not watery, just not a complex flavour profile consistent with what it says it is. Sharp clove bite on the back end. [3]

O- This is a solid beer that doesn't quite fit what I have in mind when I hear Bavarian-style wheat ale. I'm not sure what yeast was used, but it's not anywhere near as interesting as the original German versions. [2.75]

12 ounce bottle into a tulip glass. Bottled 2/8/17, had 6/26/17.

Pours a clear golden color, with a half inch head and a decent amount of soapy lacing. Smells of light yeast and malt, smoke, a little banana, some cloves, wheat, some black pepper. The taste is more condensed- yeast, light malt and vanilla, more cloves than the nose. Mostly smooth, thin feeling for the style, definitely not enough carbonation for the style.

Should have used a weizen glass, my bad, but not enough malt or yeast, doesn’t feel like a hefeweizen.

Aroma is clove, bubblegum/sweetbread and a hint of lemon. The flavor is clove, bubblegum, spices, a hint of vegetables and a sour/tart finish.

L-Orange/oak colored..big frothy head..

S-Yeasty....cloves, lemons, and light banana

T-Ok hefeweizen flavor...lemons and cloves are predominant but there is some light banana

F-Biggest issue is the overcarbonation, over spritzy feel to this...detracts from the flavors

O-I had high hopes for this one but it falls in the middling range....bring down the carbonation and it would fall more in the 3.75 area

So glad to have found my notes from a late August 2012 visit; I enjoyed 2 half-liter glasses on a late summer afternoon. 'Pints' at the brewery are served in sturdy steins, tall and slender. Enjoyed one in the shady heat of the outside patio, another inside with dinner.

A: A cloudy and yeasty deep golden pour with a healthy white topping, dense & creamy. Lace doesn't stick much in this glass, maybe a wider or flared shape would help? Fairly steady carbonation.

S: Enticing bready/clove/bubble gum scent - as 'authentic' as any of the better US-versions of Germanic hefeweizens I've come across.

T: As good as the scent is, flavors are equally as good. Rich hay, dry grass maltiness, touch of lemon, ample clove/candy sweetness. Very likable.

M: Creamy, well-built and satisfying carbonation. Never too thin - just very refreshing and vibrant. Body is light-medium, the way a lower alcohol weissbier should be.

O: Quaffable. SO good on a hot day. As mentioned before, it's about as authentic a 'German' as I've run across in the US. Love the style and very much liked this version. Well done, Exile!

A- hefe yeast comes through with a little bread, some clove.

Smell: Clove, maybe some bubble gum.

Taste: Strong bubblegum and almost bandaid taste. There is a presence of some spice from the yeast.

Mouthfeel: Sharp from the combination of the high carb and the spice from the hefe yeast.

Overall: The bubblegum/band-aid flavors made this undrinkable. Just not for me. I normally like Hefe's so I was a little surprised.

Pours a hazy gold colour. Smells like cereal malts, pale malts, fruity yeasts, and not much else. Tastes very carbonated, light-bodied, light malts, sweet yeast, fruity, banana, and a slight spiciness.

Sampling right now on 2/9/15. Bottle chilled down to 36 degrees F in my beer cooler and poured in to a "CHEERS-BOSTON' handled-glass stein. Alcohol content (on left side top of label) is 5.2% (ABV).

Brew pours a hazy copper-amber in color with a good 2-finger white foamy head. Some spotty lacing is seen when sipped then slides back down the glass. The aroma is of wheat with a hint of spice for the most part. Bit more going on with the taste with a hint of banana in with the light flavor of clove. Medium-bodied with good carbonation as seen from all the small bubbles rising up from the bottom of the glass. Overall, it wasn't bad as these type of brews can be all over the board.
