360° Pale Ale360° Pale Ale

Brewed by:
Sleeping Giant Brewing Co.
Ontario, Canada

Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
A year round offering based on the similar styles of North American Pale Ale and Amber Ale. Though slightly hop focused, our 360° Ale is very drinkable with a medium-light body, dry finish, moderate malty palate balanced by slight bitterness and a pleasing hop aroma. Simply brewed with North American 2-row pale malt and some crystal malts for colour and flavour additions, and balanced by three different hops added three times, the focus is on aroma with mild flavours. We want this to be your go-to beer enjoyed while sharing a few pints with friends!

A - Pours a slightly hazy copper colour with an orange hue, finger of head with little retention and no real lacing.

S - Scent offers up some floral hops with earthy undertones, a spicy caramel malt backbone with hints of cider and buttered bread.

T - The flavour is mild and unoffensive, the earthy hop notes dominate off the top bringing some bitter citrus rind and cedar notes. Some caramel notes and bready malt flavours come through on the finish.

M - A tad thin, but again, likely due to rough transportation of the growler. Finishes nice and dry, but not to be interpreted as overly dry.

O - A tasty pale ale that offers up just enough hops to keep you pleased, while not overloading the palette, making for an easily sessionable ale. I actually prefer this to their wheat ale as the lingering flavours are more prominent. Looking forward to their IPA once it is released.

473 mL can from the LCBO; packaged Jan 19 2017 and served slightly chilled. Now listed at 4.9%. This is the first Sleeping Giant product that I've had the chance to try.

Pours a clouded orange-amber colour, generating roughly one inch of lumpy white head. Good retention; it retreats at a casual pace, requiring more than 5 minutes to fade down to a wide, foamy collar and thin cap, simultaneously depositing a messy coat of lacing. Looks great, although the nose is somewhat subdued - coarse grains and bread, with light caramel sweetness, muddled orange citrus and a hint of indistinct orchard fruit. Slightly leafy and earthy; not too interesting, but suitable for an EPA/APA hybrid.

The flavour profile doesn't stray far from the aroma, with grainy pale malts, toasted bread and some caramelized sugar featured at the forefront. Hints of orange peel and red apple are followed up by a sturdy, bitter kick from the hop bill, which comes across as grassy, dirty, and slightly piney/resiny. These hoppy notes carry on into a bittersweet finish with some earthiness. Light-ish bodied, with appropriately moderated carbonation levels for a light pale ale - not quite crisp, but definitely not soft, either; it provides a decent bite. Far from exciting, but it'll get the job done.

Final Grade: 3.67, a B grade. Sleeping Giant's 360 Ale is another example of an "Ontario pale ale" - easy-drinking, fairly malt forward, with a firm hop backing. It's passable, but not something to go out your way for. My issue with these hybrid ales is that they often result in a "jack of all trades, master of none" situation, which is how I'd describe this one. English ale fans may not appreciate the pointed earthy/resiny bitterness on the back end, whereas American pale fans are probably looking for something with a more unique hop profile (or at the very least, something not quite so malt-focused). I'm just thinking aloud, though - the bottom line is that this is a respectable flagship brew that I'm not averse to drinking again.
