sampler on tap at the Salem Bite Brew-n-Food festival

rum barrel aged (server said the barrels are from rogue), barrel nicely up front, finishes smooth, mild chocolate/cocoa, sticky, quick tang of hops in the middle that vanishes before you realize it's there. coconut isn't making itself known very much. color of strong dark coffee, no lacing. very nice, best of the bunch today.

32 oz growelette purchased from brewery.
$7
Pure deepest black beer with a larger frothy/bubbly darker tan head..very nice to behold.
Aromas of rum certainly..very strong..than burnt oats and mild chocolate.
Taste is again rum..and vanilla and cream..then dark chocolate and peanut butter cups! Nice fudge ending,,decadent but good.
I found the mouth feel excellent..not to thick but incredibly smooth.
A very nice smooth creamy dessert beer.

I really want to like these guys, and based on the description, I thought for sure this would be a hit for Santiam. Sigh... guess again. On tap at Bier Stein last night.

Although described as a stout, the beer pours a fairly dark amber color with minimal head retention and lacing. I think BS has only recently put this on tap, but for all the world it had the look (and smell, and taste) of a beer that had been sitting around for a while. On the nose I initially got nothing. However, as the beer warmed I did pick up some very light sweet malt and rum, but that really was it. I'll take the brewer's word for it that there's some coconut in this brew, because there was no sign of it on the nose or on the palate. The flavor profile was just more of the same, and there really was nothing exciting or enjoyable about drinking this beer. Alcohol was well integrated into the flavor profile, at least I'll give them that.

Mehhh....

My Tavour foray CANtinues with yet more CANs that they have shipped to me since signing up. I had a pretty good run during New Beer Sunday (Week 693), but I was left feeling unfulfilled. I am doing my best to get to these as quickly as possible simply because they are just so intriguing. It is an integral part of The CANQuest (tm) to have this inherent curiosity.

From the CAN: "Rum-Barrel Aged Coconut Stout"; "Oregon Beer Awards Gold Medal 2017, Barrel-Aged Beer"; "A blend of different Rum barrels makes each batch unique. Batches are blended at varying ages of rum barrel aging to create a tropical Stout to be enjoyed in any season."; "British and US malts and hops, English Ale yeast and finished with natural coconut flavor just prior to packaging."

I Crack!ed the vent on this latest Pint-sized CAN & beCAN a slow, gentle Glug into the awaiting glass. I was surprised when it suddenly started foaming unCANtrollably, filling better than half of the glass with dense, foamy, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with excellent retention. It also filled the room with a coconut rum scent that was especially pleasing. Nose took me back to NMCB-5's 1993 deployment to Camp Moscrip aboard NavSta Roosevelt Roads, P.R. from March through October. As a First Class Petty Officer, we had our own fenced-in mess/lounge/clubhouse with several coconut trees. After touring both the Bacardi & Don Q distilleries, we built our own still & made copious amounts of rum! I prefer a dry rum & yes, they do exist, but even a sweet rum is okay with pineapple juice. I just cannot brook rum & Coke (or any cola) as that is just sweet on top of sweet. Ugh. Color was Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing ZERO light penetration. Mouthfeel was medium, but I was disappointed, given all of the carbonation that made me wait for the head to finally fall away. The taste began like a liquefied Mounds CANdy bar - coconut enrobed in dark chocolate but then, warming, the rum came on like gangbusters! I must have gotten a really good batch! Oh man, did the rum flavor take me back. Speaking of which, rum is the next big thing, along with mead. Rye whisky had its comeback, now it is their turn. I realize that I was enjoying it, but as to the Style, it was well within specs especially their innovative use of rum barrels. Finish was somewhere between semi-sweet & semi-dry, very boozy with the inclusion of the rum barrel aging. Phew. Wotta find!

Thanks to Sharpski for this one. 16.9oz bottle poured into 12oz tulip. Poured a solid black color with more than 3/4 inch of medium brown head that had decent retention and lacing. Lovely beer.

Rum and I have a bit of a history, and sometimes I still get a bit of a bad flashback. As soon as I cracked this open, a strong rum scent wafted forward, and it was most pleasant. In the glass, some coconut showed through, although the combination seemed to overpower the base beer a bit. Pretty similar on the tongue, although none of the aspects seemed as strong as in the nose, which is odd for me. Usually, I get more from the palate than the olfactory.

The body was fairly typical for the style, thinner than some, thicker than others. Drinkability was very good, smooth and easy. Overall, a very pleasant brew indeed. Worth trying if you see it.

BIg creamy fluffy dark colored head retains very well, decent lacing long legs, pitch black beer

Nose loads of coconut, a ton of like adjunct coconut and toasted coconut oils, with rum, spiced sweet candy rum, basically like a tropical drink all over, a touch of stout underneath and some cocoa, very fruity, touch of fudge

Taste starts with the stout, cookie dough and dark chocolate cocoa, then but toasted coconut and spiced rum, coconut oil and suntan lotion, then spiced rum and sweet candy boozy rum with spices, cocoa butter, dark chocolate cookie notes, flash of vanilla, so much weird cocktail spices, little bitterness kicking in

Mouth is med bod, a touch thin, decent fizzy carb

Overall mixed, nice rum notes other than over spiced cocktail flavors that get nagging, nice coconut other than the suntan oil thin, decent base beer, but not anything too special

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque in the glass with a two finger dark khaki head with great retention and good lacing. Aroma of semi-sweet dark toasted malt, cocoa and big coconut. Flavor is mild dark toasted malt, milk chocolate, toasted coconut, a hint of coffee and a little rum. Finishes with lingering coconut/coffee/milk chocolate/rum. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess and good mouth feel. Delivers on all its promises, clear coconut and mild rum character. The underlying stout malt is somewhat subdued, but with excellent chocolate flavor and robust enough for the barreling and coconut adjunct. Well balanced, considering that both coconut and rum are dominant flavors; the start is more chocolatey semi-sweet stout with the coconut developing into a finish that reveals the rum component. Nicely done and flavorful.

Had this on cask at Bailey's Taproom. A beautiful mix of the sweet and spicy rum, toasted coconut and chocolate/roast from the base beer. Nice silky mouth feel from the cask conditioning. Really enjoyed this one.

Thanks to JLindros for sharing this.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice dark brown almost black with a thin mocha head that fades to leave light wisps and a thin blanket.

S - Aromas of coconut oil, coconut flesh, rum juice, spices, light chocolate.

T - Taste is similar to the nose with loads of coconut suntan lotion. Rum is light but spiced, faint chocolate.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, body is light.

O - Overall this was a decent enough stout, solid coconut notes.

Santiam Pirate is a good looking barrel aged stout. A lot of the time, barrel aged beers have that thin head and oily look to them, but Pirate is different. Pirate is black as night and clean looking like a polished 8 ball. The head above is impressive and sturdy. Its khaki colored foam sttles with little bubbles popping one by one to ultimately leave a smooth and creamy looking surface.

Straight up Hawaiian Tropic in a glass. Coconut, rum, milk chocolate... all the same. The wood really lingers on in the end though. A touch of cola hits before the wood with a cinnamon/ nutmeg spice thing going on.

Pretty thin, highly carbonated, and very dry. I think the dryness is enhanced due to the wood presence. Despite the tropical infusion of sweet flavors, this is actually well balanced and has a bit of a bitter bite to compliment the barrel finish.

Overall, Pirate sounds, looks, and smells good, but the flavor and texture really turned it around negativity for me. It really needs more body to it. If this was creamy and rich like the appearance implied it would probably be an outstanding beverage. Cheers.

Bottle from Belmont station. Pours out pretty much pitch black, dark and oily, small coating of beige head. Aroma is coconut, chocolate and roast grains, a little bit like a Mounds bar. Taste brings more coconut, a little bit of vanilla sweetness, dark chocolate, followed by a sharp bitter bite. Pretty damn smooth killer bite at the end.
