22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours nearly opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice dense soapy lacing clings around the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation retaining the cap. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, toasted oats, and dark bread; with lighter notes of nuttiness, smoke, charcoal, herbal, wood, pepper, raisin, plum, cherry, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, light-moderate earthy hops, and light fruity yeast notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, toasted oats, and dark bread; with lighter notes of nuttiness, smoke, charcoal, herbal, wood, pepper, raisin, plum, cherry, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal/spicy hop and roast/char bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, toasted oats, dark bread, light smoke/char, herbal, wood, pepper, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Very nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, light-moderate earthy hops, and light fruity yeast notes; with a nice roast/hop bitter/sweet balance, and zero acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Light dryness from hop/char bitterness, increasing through the glass. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is nice. Zero warming alcohol for 7.8%. Overall this is a delicious imperial oatmeal stout. All around nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, light-moderate earthy hops, and light fruity yeast notes; very smooth and easy to drink for the ABV. Very English style focused. Nicely rich English malt complexity, balancing noble hops, and restrained yeast ester flavors. A very enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

Thanks to Bill for sharing.
Pours a reddish dark brown with a thin skim of tan foam.
Aroma has a slight acidic twang to it, otherwise there's some carob, molasses, and light roast.
Lightly tart twang of infection unfortunately. Cherry skins and raisins, molasses and chocolate.
Thin and tart, a little bit off but not awful. Would rather retry fresh at the source.

Similar to the UP IPA, this one came with a strange burnt sugar smell, but instead of vinegar it had a tart lactic acid note. The weird burnt sugar wasn't as strong in the taste on this one compared to the other, but it was definitely souring. Unmistakeable tang of lactic acid, apparently caused by bacteria. Not really drinkable. I wanted to like this newer brewery but their bottled beers (they had a saison at the UP Fall Fest that was good) are 0/2 with me so far and I don't think I'll try another one.

Stone Ship Stout by Brickside Brewery is like walking into an old-time candy store. Aromas and vibrant colors assault your senses -- thoughts of hops vacate your mind. You struggle to take everything in, and your gait slows while you linger over freshly made candies of all sorts. The only remotely nutritious offering (oatmeal fig bars) is jostled from the forefront by portly sweets of molasses, dark chocolate, and licorice, beckoning from behind a pane of polished glass. A confection artist, and new friend, yells “catch!” and hurls a block of baker’s chocolate in your direction. Instead of bitterly nursing a struck noggin, you decide that the company and surroundings redeem the headache.
