The pour is far from bright and clear as this beer is quite cloudy. It does have a huge foamy head that falls to chunky rafts.

The smell and taste are where it really fails. There is a non-DMS vegetative off odor and taste that is quite noticeable. The smell is malt-heavy, like a sweet cereal smell, some very light citrus and spicy notes.

A metallic tang comes out immediately that is unpleasant. The malts are nice, some sweetness, and a bit of peppery spice on the finish. The vegetable flavor is not as heavy as the aroma would suggests, but the metallic taste is quite disagreeable.

The feel is sharp on the tongue and bloating to the belly. It has a slick feel on the tongue which I think is appropriate to the style.

This beer certainly does not match up with some of the better reviews here and I wonder about sanitation and batch variability. Right off the pour - cloudy is not what this style should present. Can't give this a solid recommendation, and hopefully some of the other cans I received are from a different lot, because this particular can was not a good beer.

12oz can canned 6/31/17 poured into a pint glass is a mostly clear yellow gold body and floats a fluffy 2in white head after an aggressive pour and leaves a spotted lacing.

Aroma is a sweet-ish flowery cereal mix that releases well in the taste.
Flavors match. The label's "beer flavored beer" is a perfect description.
Mouthfeel is lighter with a clean finish.

Overall a well crafted delicious version of the style.

Good yellow color, medium carbonation. I think it was meant to be light, like you could have a few while sitting on your porch. That works as it is flavorful but far from extreme in any category. Had. Most prevalent taste is grain but followed by some citrus.

Pours a hazy medium yellow with a thick head.
Smell is a nice mix of grain and citrus.
Taste follows the nose. Grain with a bit of citrus added.
Very nice helles.

Review from BA Mag Issue #117 ( Oct 2016 )

Stunning, Exceptional, Drinkable, Authentic
A triple decocted lager, not something you come by easily in US “craft” brewing culture. South Side Pride is all shiny and crisp with some pretty stellar carbonation from a canned brew. Its dry maltiness has more than enough depth to keep it German-style. The hoppiness comes off a little bitter at first, but then more spicy and herbal in the finish. You know I’m going to say it ... this beer should be in tallboy cans, anything this clean and crushable deserves a bigger format. Easily one of the best American brewed lagers I’ve had this year. Pours a bright golden yellow color - hazy but not opaque. Thick frothy white head dissipates leaving a ring of white foam along the outside of the beer and lots of sticky white lacing. Biggets take away - not sure why this one is hazy? Theres nothing "bright" about it.

Smell is malty with some wheat and grain aromas, and a tinge of lemon and citrus. Not bad.

Taste is wonky - There is the expected wheat and grain flavors, but there is an overarching flavor that tastes off. Hard to place - maybe vegetal is the right word? comes through and permeates the flavor. Slight lemony hop flavor on the back end with some grass wheat - alfalfa like - flavors.

Feel is lighter, but not really crisp. It also isn't a clean feel to it - theres some density to it. Medium carbonation.

Overall this was pretty meh. Doesn't look like a helles lager and the taste isn't great either.

Nothing wrong with this Helles... except I'm disqualified from reviewing as I'm a Northsider.
Pleasant, but one is not enough to do the trick.

Being a Sox fan, the label of this Baderbräu caught my eye. Being a German-style beer fan, the banner graphic with *It's Decocted!* made me double-take. Being just about 4 months old (canned on 09/21/16) gave me pause, but I opted to see if maybe *someone* is making a good Munich Helles.

Poured into my short Becher glass.

L -- Highly effervescent, hazy yellow with a sudsy, but dense, white head. Hazy is a bad ding for this style.

S -- Light DMS with mild citrus back.

T -- Light graininess up front with an off sort of vegetal character and light citrus note. Lightly herbal hop notes in the finish with the graininess and some (very) mild breadiness in the aftertaste, but the off vegetal notes push through as well.

F -- Mouthfeel is soft and smooth with a light body and crisp finish.

O -- Baderbräu's web site says this is the "conversion" beer for your light beer drinker. It follows with, "Triple decocted for 'maximum' flavor, we specially sourced undermodified ,alt to make it all work together." I only wish they'd sourced better malt for the recipe because - even with decoction mashing - there's none of the toasted, melanoidin malt character a good Helles ought to have -- never mind the haziness and less-than clean flavor.

I bought a can of South Side Pride from Binnys single shelf. It poured a clear yellow with white head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent had a touch of lemon. The taste had a weird funk...much like Short's used to have...almost Chalky. The Mouthfeel is lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it's ok certainly did not live up to it's name.
