Notes / Commercial Description:
This "old brown" is a brewer flagship, and a typical beer style for the region in which it is produced. A blend of 'old' brown beer, already maturated for 6 months in oak barrels, and some 'young' brown beer. Each vessel is sampled separately and blended to taste, so as to obtain the perfect combination.

Each year, the taste slightly different though the main characteristics remain always the same: the aroma is dominated by green apple, red fruits and oak. The taste is refreshingly acidic and very thirst-quenching.

Poured from a 12.7 ounce bottle into a tulip. 2013 vintage.

Pours a murky brownish red with a thin khaki head. Recedes to a thick ring. Slightly cloudy.

Smells of red wine vinegar, dry sherry, and tart cherry. A little bit of cigar box and baking spice.

Big red wine vinegar on the taste, raw cranberries, tobacco. Tart raspberries on the finish. Dry and acetic but juicy. Very little malt or sweetness, quite tart. More of the Oudenaarde style. Could use more balance.

Juicy smooth texture, clings to the tongue nicely.

Overall an interesting beer with some character. Not my favorite in the style but worth a try.

Popping the cap reveals very little carbonation--bordering on flat. I don't hold the lack of head against a sour beer, but I do hold flatness against them. The nose is sour and vinous. Flavor: extremely acidic and vinegary. A tad fruity. But really, this is a very uninteresting Flemish brown, one-dimensional, all sourness with nothing else to offer. I could imagine mixing this with something else to get an interesting beer, but not at the price it's sold at.

Makes me wish I had bought a Rodenbach instead.

Murky brown with not much head. Smells of sour vinegar, macerated grapes and some funky stuff. The taste is insanely sour, with a bit of a metallic feel to it, and not much else - no sweetness or funkiness or anything. That being said, sour beers are awesome, and, as simple as this one might be, it is quite good. Medium body, sour aftertaste.

330ml bottle, day 20 of the 2016 Craft BeerAdvent calendar - nice to see one of the less common sour styles represented in this holiday collection.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, dark orange-brick brown colour, with three fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and yet somewhat fizzy tan head, which leaves a few instances of distant mountain range lace around the glass as it gently recedes.

It smells of sour cherries and raspberries, gritty and grainy caramel malt, red balsamic vinegar, muddled earthy spices, some cedar-esque woodiness, mildly funky and musty yeasty notes, and an ephemeral generic hop bitterness. The taste is some rather tart lemon, cherry, blackberry, and underripe apple fruitiness, bready and crackery caramel malt, tanned leather, plain, somewhat oxidized cooking vinegar, clove and white pepper spice, wet and musty oak, and perhaps some ethereal hints of dark cocoa powder.

The carbonation is fairly sturdy in its headstrong frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and sort of thin-seeming in its attempt at smoothness. It finishes trending dry, the lingering sour fruit, wood, and indistinct bitterness leaning in that direction.

Overall, this is a decent enough version of the style, if lacking a bit of oomph (old-school variety) in certain areas - generally the mouthfeel. At any rate, it's always nice that, if it has to be a sour, at least it's a fruity sour - as opposed to overtly funky or yeasty. Glad I got to try it.

8 oz pour on tap into a wine glass. This is a 2014 keg.

A: big frothy off white brownish head settles to a film. body is a slightly hazy brown red.

S: cherries, apples, raspberries, light vinegar, and a little oak.

T: sour cherries, light bits of oak, wine grapes, light carbonation.

M: Body is really soft lower carbonation the sourness grips your mouth quickly. It let's go gradually but not with much carbonation.

O: this is a great Oud Bruin. flavors are soft but huge and the sourness isn't crazy.

Opted for my tulip for this one.
The appearance was a semi-thick dark amber to brown color with a quickly dissipating finger's of a little white foamy to fizzy head. Just a miniscule concave lace upon the sides of the glass.
The aroma captured a super nice blend of sweet to sour apple cider vinegar, sweet wood, caramel malts, light funkiness, some cherry sour flesh, light raspberry tartness, sweet grass, and ended with a touch of lemon.
The flavor leaned towards a crisp sour meshing of the cherries and raspberries that seemed to meld on into the funkiness and woodiness. Mild acidity. Underscored by a little bit of bitterness, everything came together in the aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a fair sipping quality about it. Carbonation seemed a bit under, but I did see that this is a 2013 bottle (no harm, no foul to me). ABV did feel on par. Semi-sticky raspberry to cherry sort of finish with a really nice tartness.
Overall, an exceptionally nicely aged Flanders Oud Bruin, I'd love to have again preferably fresh just to see the differences.

A- Pours a muddled toffee color (plenty of yeast suspended in this one), and with a minimal head, but rather a vicious ring around the liquid. Carbonation is much too hard to see, and the overall appearance seems to be a little watery, with little to no lacing sticking to the side of the glass. Average looking at best.

S- To me, this smells a lot like sour soother candies, with tart peach, muted balsamic vinegar, Belgian funky yeast strains that are most definitely wild...perhaps some Granny Smith apple and a slightly spicy wood aroma that has a bit of cinnamon. Interesting!!

T- Well this stands up to the style that it is meant to be.....heavy tart cherry, sour citrus, malt vinegar, green apples, sour raspberry, wild yeast and/or bacterium strains to provide a real funky nature and not much else.....this is definitely a sipping beer!

M/O- Medium body with some smooth buttery texture, and there is plenty of carbonation to boot, but it is very tart and could be a little less in your face....however.....I do find that after a couple of tries, the malt sweetness starts showing and it becomes a palatable beer. Not my favorite style but a palate cleanser and thirst quenching most definitely!

"Editie 2012" 37.5 cl bottle bought this spring, served into a tulip glass: promising start, cloudy old bronze, a gush of Champagne foam that settled to a scrim, replenished by steady carbonation. Fair bit of beige flakey sediment. Smells of apricot--no, apricot pastry, a bit of banana, brown sugar on toast, a bit of wood chips. Very tart attack in the mouth, some fruit but not a huge volume of taste fighting through. A bit of caramel. Feels at first leggy and then astringent, with an impression of feeling moisture evaporating off the inside of my mouth. Glad to see a new entrant in this style, would like a bit more from this example, but will be happy to stick with it as the blends will unavoidably vary over time.
