Style: American Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.70%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Not your traditional brown ale. This is a big, bad, bold brown. It's the intersection of a cabernet and an IPA. Or, say, 15th and Broadway. A blend of three oaks added during fermentation creates a red wine-like structure. California Cascade hops bring the local flavor that goes from roasted and bitter on first swig to a soulful, chocolate finish. Generally speaking, not for wussies. But who are we to say?

Had on-tap at the bar at SOMA StreatFood Park. Reviewed from notes.

A - Dark brown, clear body with an off-white head that quickly disappeared before I found a place to sit down.

S - Light nutty bread, milk chocolate, and raisins. Faint hint of hops.

T - Seemed watered down for some reason. The smells were evident in the taste, but to a lesser degree than expected. For some reason, the back end and aftertaste reminded me of how floral fabric softener smells (think chemically synthesized flowers).

M - Easy-drinking, light bodied and light carbonation.

O - An okay beer, not that bad, but not that good. Though listed at 6.7 ABV, it seemed like a session ale. The strange "fabric softener" aftertaste was not appealing, and is what made me not really like this one. I suppose I would have it again, but only if there wasn't something better available.

The pour is a dark brown color with a khaki head. Toasted malt and bread with some strong roasted malt aromas. There is a hint of chocolate, a touch of ash, and some earthy hops. The flavor is far too bitter for a brown ale. Some toasted malt, cocoa, and lots of roasted malt. A hint of coffee, some earth, and burnt nuts. Was not a fan of this beer.

22 ounce bottle with no bottling dates.

Body is a very dark brown, nearing black. Foamy, khaki colored head. Fizzles out to a very thin covering, with pools of bubbles.

Nutty nose, with aromas of almonds and hazelnuts. Sweet chocolate and cream. Light oak aromas.

Very, very bitter from the start. Flavors of ash and charcoal. There's some nutty, chocolate flavors hidden in there, but they are immediately choked out by a disgusting bitterness that tastes like aspirin. Tastes horrible.

First off, tastes nothing like a brown ale. Second off, it tastes like someone ground up some aspirin and added it to my beer. Terrible. Avoid.

I've only had this beer on draft, and it's a nice all around beer. It's a very dark brown with very little head. Definitely has a burnt espresso aroma with the same flavors along with bitter chocolate. Although it's dark, it has a light to medium body and finish.

Received as part of a gift pack for the holidays...was excited to try as this brewer is not one we see locally. Thin coffee/cocoa taste with some apparent hops. Not bad, not great.

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) bottle into a conical pint; best by 10/17/18.
A: Pours a clear brown with a one inch, fluffy, tan head, good retention and solid lacing.
S: Aromas of mocha, macademia/almond, and vanilla are evident. Definitely malty to the nose.
T: Sweet and malty. Flavors of coffee, lactose sugar, and vanilla with a little zestiness, consistent with but not exactly minty. Nutty flavors in the background. Bitterness plays a big role in tamping down the sweetness.
M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Sweet, tingly aftertaste/afterfeel.
O: Definitely an interesting, flavor forward brown ale. A bit sweet for my taste, but I truly appreciate the enhanced flavors provided by the oaking. Would have like to have seen more bitterness offsetting some of the sweetness, but I supposed that would have basically made it a porter.

Pours a half finger of head on a dark brown body.
The aroma is dry cocoa, roasted malt and wood.
The taste is burnt wood, chocolate, milk, and pine bitter at the end.
The texture is crisp and thick.
Tasty and enjoyable.

Pours dark brown with a loverly firm khaki head.

Nose is assertive esters, chocolate, malted milk and creamed sugared coffee - very nice.

Mouthfeel is rich, creamy, elegant, wonderfully balanced and very inviting.

Flavor profile is delicious coffee, malt, chocolate malt and burnt toast, all wonderfully balance with a rich burnt toast bitter.

Another very drinkable Calicraft beer. These guys are doing something right as all three of their current bottle offerings are very good and wonderfully drinkable, along or with food. Whether you like them or not is up to you; but, these are very well made brews.

Finish is dry malt, coffee and bitter chocolate, all long lasting and memorable.

(Notes from tasting)

Calicraft Oaktown Brown:

Appearance: brown with red & yellow highlights;

Smell: light coffee, roasted oats;

Taste/Mouthfeel: slightly bubbly for a stout/dark style beer, hoppy, coffee, slight orange notes.

Pretty good.

Poured into a sample glass.
