Brewed by:
Calicraft Brewing Co.
California, United States

Style: German Kölsch

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Coast is the taste of California. It's a brew for the bracing waves of NorCal or the sunny summers of SoCal. Mt. Shasta-grown malt adds body, while Noble and Crystal hops give it a bright, crisp, refreshing finish. Like the Golden State, this sessionable Kolsch is laid-back but complex. It's going from slopes to shore in just a few hours. Drink what you love about Cali.

Not my favorite style but, as they go, this one is pretty darn good. Smooth golden appearance, sweet tasting. Low ABV (common for the style) makes this very "sessionable." Recommended.

Decanted from a 12 oz (355 ml) bottle into a conical pint glass; best by 10/18/18.
A: Pours a clear, golden color with a half to three quarter inch, foamy white head, with patchy retention and a fair amount of lacing.
S: Aromas of sweet grass and grains, with a pepperiness. Slightly spicy at front end.
T: Tastes slightly lemony, with components of nose still evident. Clean, crisp, although finish a touch bitter.
M: Light bodied with solid effervescence.
O: This is a very well designed and produced Kölsch. That said, the flavor characteristics lean toward a Dortmunder to my palate.

Pours a clear orange amber with a lovely but short lived pure white head.

Nose is negligible and that is even at room temperature! A few swirls releases soe esters that are pleasant but the nose is closed.

Mouthfeel is rich and creamy with light carbonation and very nice balance.

Flavors are light yeasty white bread, hints of celery and green herbs but fresh, clean and inviting. There are hints of wheat and white pepper and an all around pleasant drink that has a wonderful flavor profile for food.

Finish is clean, dry and lightly salty. Very light pleasant bitter character. This is a wonderfully balanced and drinkable beer.

On the pour, the color is a bit dark, in my opinion, but it is a clear deep golden-yellow with a half inch of foamy white head. Surprisingly strong cling to the glass.

The smell is like a yeasty biscuit dough with just a bit of lemon and grassy green hops. Very clean and crisp, there is nothing muddling things up.

The aroma promises a refreshing taste and it delivers. Crisp malts up front, with a bit of grassy hop character, some mild grape flavor and just a bit of lemony zing. There is a little mineral note that is pleasant. But no mistake about it...the malt is the star here and it could maybe use a bit more of a contribution from the hops to bring out the fruity flavors a little more. The finish is floral and lemony, medium bodied, mild on the bitterness.

I am pleasantly surprised by this beer. It is a decent representation and interpretation of the style which inspired it, and overall it is a nice brew. The overall category rating reflects the adherence to style and the high enjoyment factor. Recommended.

I've gotten a couple bombers and a few six packs of this before. Poured either into a pint glass or drank right out the can. A luxurious alternative to American macros for golfing, hiking, sports, beach day, or anything fun. Although, it doesn't really compliment a meal. Get a Coke and save your coasts for later.
It is not by any means overwhelming, in fact, I would barely call it whelming. If you want the feel of a light beer with a ton of interesting flavor, get yourself a sixer, which I prefer over the bombers. I haven't had many Kölsch style beers, but I'd hope they are all something like this.
The awesome green can makes you want to be outside, as you should be. Once again, well done Calicraft.
