341ml bottle, day 1 of the Parallel 49/Central City Mystery Gift Holiday Countdown (can't, or won't say 'advent', eh?) collaboration ADVENT pack.

This beer pours a very, very dark chocolate brown colour, with not so prominent cola highlights, and two skinny fingers of weakly foamy, but generally creamy tan head, which leaves little beyond a few instances of wayward islet lace around the glass as it quickly dissolves.

It smells of mildly roasted caramel malt, milky cocoa, a bready yeastiness, cherry-topped banana cream pie, tame anise candy, and musty, earthy, and kind of perfumed floral hops. The taste is muddled chocolate, caramel, wet dark bread, free-range yeast, sort of medicinal cherry notes, and equally indistinct earthy, weedy, and leafy hops.

The carbonation is fairly light and innocuous, what with its bland frothiness, the body a decently full medium weight, but sort of clammy and pithy in its overly reliant fruity character. It finishes on the sweet side, the strangely muzzled chocolate and cherry headliners sort of just phoning it in.

Meh - if they were just going for a blended Bavarian cake essence, then perhaps they got it right - but for a beer, I want something more tangible, and that ain't this (sorry, CBC). The purported flavours are mixed at best, and when the most helpful thing you can say about a strong beer is that the 18-proof booze is hard to detect, well, that's not all it's cracked up to be.

I enjoyed the chocolate taste in this beer but I found the cherry to be mostly absent. I was really hoping to get a good balance between the two.

This poured a dark brown with a thin tan head that disappeared quickly. There was some chocolate and cherry on the nose but around the edge. It was prevalently bready malts with some licorice notes. A malty taste with some cherry, unsweetened dark chocolate, medium to full bodied followed. The higher ABV was well hidden with just some mild warming. The mouthfeel was lightly effervescent and on the medium side.

341ml bottle poured into tulip 29/11/14

A almost black but a dump down the middle of the glass yields just a short lived film that leaves no lace

S chocolate syrup, cherry cola, cough syrup, I can see where their going with the black forest cake but it doesn't quite get there, chocolate covered raisins, faint licorice and smoke

T the cherries don't taste real but there's lots of them, chocolate syrup, tastes like something that I'd mix in my milk when I was 9

M medium full but a little dead on the mouth, you need to give it a shake in your mouth to get any bubbles

O fairly well concealed booze but I never really got on board with this one, decent but nothing worth looking for

I can see where their going but it could use a little work, kinda tastes fake and a little over the top

Strength is well masked by a ton of malt. Delicious.
