Can at Gunflint Lodge. Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a small, light brown head of foam. It left sticky rings of lace on the glass. It smelled strongly of roasted coffee, chocolate, vanilla and toffee. Bold, roasted coffee taste with sweet chocolate and toffee backbone.

Poured from 25oz. bottle to glass, good coffee notes. 9.1% alcohol very well hidden. Super smooth, a very tasty sipper definitely got tastier as it warmed up. Cheers

Economart - Spooner, WI

Bottled: 1/14/15

I saw a lot of 3rd St. stuff around northern Wisconsin and kept passing it up until I ran across an imperial coffee porter. Gotta be decent, right? It's black, that's for sure. I see zero light passing through the body. The head is slow to rise but it eventually reaches a finger in height of mocha foam. Carbonation runs up the side of the snifter to keep the chunky ring of foam saturated. It's a good looking beer, dark and menacing. It looks big and bold.

Oh, damn! The nose isn't as in your face big as I was expecting but it's greatly balanced and flat out mouthwatering. The roasted barely is soft and lean. The coffee is complimentary, pure, and quality. That soft roast kicks it off with even handed, cold press coffee popping up in the middle and bringing with it a splash of cream and a roasted cashew nuttiness. Clean, nuanced, and salivary gland inducing. Nicely done!

Where the nose left off, the flavor stepped up. The roast comes across as rich and robust. Cold press coffee picks up in the middle and cols down the roast with bright coffee notes that run through the finish. That cashew nuttiness, oiliness Really jumps out in the back 1/3. The splash of cream is there as well which adds the perceived sugar needed to balance everything. This is a damn good porter!

The body and feel of this beer makes it even more dangerous than you'd think. It's a middleweight with aggressive enough carbonation to keep it moving quickly. Enough to prickle the tip of the tongue actually. The roasted barley leaves behind a soft bitterness and the finish is fairly dry. It's oddly refreshing. Highly drinkable. A beer like this could put you on your ass.

Coffee porters and stouts are usually good no matter who makes them. A lot of times the heavy handed coffee additions help their case. Cool Beans is even handed and flat out good. It's roasty, it's full of good java, and it's highly drinkable. I wish I'd have picked up more of this.

Poured from a 22oz. bottle.

A: Pours a deep dark brown with a thick tan head. Good retention and solid lacing.

S: Roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, brown sugar, caramel and a slight smokiness.

T: Roasted coffee, roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla, brown sugar, and a little bit of earthy hops.

M: Medium bodied, moderately carbonated, with a smooth creamy finish.

O: This one surprised me. I wasn't expecting much as I am not impressed with their regular beers. But this was a damn fine brew. Definitely coffee forward but it melds well with the other flavors you'd expect from a porter rather then drowning them out.

This is a clean, simple porter with out any fuss. The coffee is obviously the main flavor, and this beer doe snot try to complicate that. The aroma is strong but not overpowering, and the taste is clean, but certainly not boring. A solid coffee beer, recommended for a BA looking for coffee without undue richness.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a chalice.

Appearance: Pours a dark blackish brown with a hint of amber. Slight finger of tan head which settles into a thin patch.

Smell: A very roasty and fairly sweet dark malt forward aroma with big hints of coffee and chocolate. Dark roasted barley malt with big upfront hints of coffee beans and dark chocolate along with some burnt toast, biscuit, grains, nuts, caramel, yeast, and smoke. Sweet hints of cream, vanilla, and brown sugar. Some earthy hop hints in the background. A very solid roasty aroma.

Taste: Like the smell hints at, a very roasty and nicely sweet dark malt driven taste with notes of coffee and chocolate. Dark roasted barley malt with big dominant notes of coffee beans and dark chocolate. Also some malt notes of biscuit, toast, grains, caramel, nuts, smoke, and yeast. Sweet creamy notes of vanilla, lactose, and brown sugar. Some earthy hop bitterness comes through towards the finish. A very nice taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Very creamy and smooth for its size and strength. Finishes dry.

Overall: A very good take on an Imperial Coffee Porter. Good rich taste of coffee and chocolate with a smooth creamy body.

On tap in a stemmed 10oz glass at 3 Squares, Maple Grove, MN on 1/31/15.

I am so glad they didn't make this as a stout. American Porter was the best platform for this enjoyable, mulli-leveled treat. The rich coffee/expresso flavor was clearly dominant, but a fine balance of malts and hops led to a very smooth sipper. Very drinkable for how flavorable (strong) this beer is. I plan to repeat.

Good coffee flavor but the ABV is too high and the bottle to big to make this an AM beer.

Pours obviously very dark with a nice thick tan head, smell is very roasted and a little sweet. Taste ALMOST has heat to it (my memory is still fresh with Indeed Hot Box), very nice roasted coffee flavors. Just like a cold press bit with the toasty reminder of porter. Damn good and effective at 9%. Third Street never disappoints.
