A: Pours dark amber / light brown with a small beige head that fades quite quickly.
S: Smell of caramel malts, toffee, some dark fruits and soaked fruits with some fruity esters and yeasts aromas. Nice.
T: The taste is not as rich as foreseen from the nose, mainly malty, but with lots of phenolic flavors and a herbal scent which is a bit disturbing, somehow medicinal. Does not last very long on the palate.
M: Medium bodied with a low carbonation. This makes this ale a bit cloying given the bottle is 500ml.
O: Quite a well made Belgian strong ale, true to the style, pleasant from the nose, but not really exciting after all. Enjoyable but quite forgettable.

12.7oz (?!) bottle purchased at Mid Columbia Wine & Spirits in Kennewick, WA, about three months ago. This was the first place I’d seen beers from Crux, and I have to admit I fell for the cool label. Incidentally, that label lists the abv as 11%, and is stamped with a bottled-on date of “Jan 19 ’15.”

Poured a dark, ruddy color into a Chimay goblet, with a thin, bubbly beige head that vanished on the double-quick (a very thin beige foam collar stuck around).

Vinuous aroma, coupled with fruitcakey dark fruits and booze.

Sweet and bitter dark fruits and apples are the primary flavor characteristics, along with notes of red wine and an underlying boozy flavor. There’s an undercurrent of diacetyl that brings down the drinkability.

Too full bodied for an authentic Belgian experience, and the mouthfeel suffers for it.

Good flavors were present, but they were compromised by the diacetyl and the overall “heaviness.” Although only 12(ish)oz, it became something of a job to finish this, so I’m grateful this wasn’t a bomber or 750mL, as it might well have become a drainpour.

on-tap @ baileys

Opted for the 10oz pour, rather than the offered 20oz pour (yikes). Served in a mini-nonic. Dark mahogany body - aromas of dark fruit, wood, booze. A nice radiating sweetness, rich chocolate malts. First offering from Crux was a pretty impressive BSDA

Pours a half finger of head on a cloudy brown body.
The aroma is brown sugar, raisins and figs.
The taste has lots of dark dry fruits, mildly sweet and a latent alcohol heat.
The texture is soft.
It's great and super drinkable.

Poured into a Gavroche tulip. Pours a dark reddish amber with a half finger khaki head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, dark stone fruit, moderately estery, a touch of alcohol. Flavor starts with sweet dark fruit, caramel malt, clove then develops an herbal bitterness with residual dark fruits and moderate boozy element. Medium bodied with peppery carbonation. The initial impression is very sweet, but the developing bitter herbal element tends to cover and complement the sweetness. A somewhat idiosyncratic take on a Belgian strong dark, but I rather enjoyed it. The finishing booziness is a bit of a negative, but there are plenty of strong flavors here to support it.

Poured from bottle into a chalice
Appearance: pours a clear red with thin white head that quick fades to nothing.
Aroma: Raisins, plums, Bing cherries, slight spice
Taste: dark fruit is the dominant flavor, but it is rather subtle. Mild clove and pepper on the tail end. Caramel and rock candy sweetness. Faint alcohol heat
Mouthfeel: medium body, very light carbonation
Overall: mediocre BSDA, not something I will likely revisit

16.9oz : Teku

Clear, deep garnet colored body with a thin, bubbly light tan head.

Sweet, candi sugars upfront, some molasses, very faint Belgian yeast and dark fruit. Nice, but a bit subdued/one dimensional.

The taste is similar to the nose. Nothing offensive, and some good points, but really lacking in any complexity and fails to leave me with really wanting more.

Medium-thin body, mild foamy carbonation.

As stated above, nothing unpleasant, but also nothing particularly well done either and left me with no real desire to even finish the whole bottle.

Pours like garnet stone (deep dark ruby). Little head that settles to NO bubbles. No lace as well.

Sweet and sour smell. Lots of berry, reminds me of a guerze.

Taste matches the smell--sweet and tart with a dark malt background. The finish is sour and lingers through the aftertaste slowly dissipating. Highly carbonated with a moderate body.
