Notes / Commercial Description:
Imperial Mosaic IPA

Hops climb up twine that’s just loosely tied to the trellis with a half hitch knot—and this Imperial IPA is just loosely tied to tradition. The Mosaic hop imparts surprisingly floral aromas instead of the more expected grapefruit-y notes. On the palate, complex layers of flavors might remind you of guava, mango, stone fruit and lemon, unraveling your idea of what an Imperial IPA should be.

Schwing! Beautifully crafted DIPA, rich and flavorful without being overpowering. Amber with nice tight creamy head, light syrupy, hop nose, malt and hops blend perfectly in the flavor, more smoothness on the finish. Awesome!

Half Hitch imperial mosaic india pale ale. 12.7oz bottled on 09/13/2016. Beer pours straw yellow in color but forms a respectable white head. Aroma is beautifully perfumed with flowers. I've never smelled an IPA as distinctly floral as this; I'm getting lilacs and lavender. Flavor is sweet with white sugar and honey, and a sudsy, heavy mouthfeel, complemented by a moderate dose of fruity and citrusy IBUs. This IIPA seriously leaves something in your mouth -- but it's not an intensely bitter hop bomb, it's just a lot of flavor. Clean & crisp this beer is not.

This beer is like no other IIPA. If I had to find a comparison, 90 minute is the closest, but this is nothing like that. I don't know if this is destined to become a new classic, or if I'll return to it frequently, but I highly recommend seeking it out.

500 ml bottle, poured into a Crux snifter glass. Enjoyed on 9.1.16, reviewed from Tasting Journal.

The beer pours a pale copper color, golden hues with a slight chill haze, minimal glass activity and a thick, soapy white head that has a good retention and lace. The aroma is nice, juicy tropical fruits, mango and pineapple with tangerine and grapefruit citrus that bring out some bright floral notes while the backbone is of strong, sticky sweet malt character. The flavors are good, again, super tropical and fruity, citrusy, floral with the signature herbal/grassy mosaic backbone that offers a bit of pine and earthiness before the sticky and sweet malts come out, amber and pale with some alcohol warmth. The mouthfeel is good, thick and coating, rich medium/heavy body with lower carbonation but soft gentle texture and a smooth dry finish.

Verdict: A really good Mosaic IPA from Crux, it's not my favorite hop, but I really enjoyed this beer. Nicely balanced between malts and hops, good showing of the hop but it's not totally in your face and it's not overly herbal and grassy either. The bitterness is kept in check though it's a bit boozy, still a very worthy beer.

Absolutely love this NWIPA. Kind of stumbled upon it at the Oregon Garden Beer Fest on Father's Day coming back from Sisters, OR. My wife's grandfather was with us from Denver and both of us went into the beer fest and tried almost everything there when we found this one. We then just filled our cups with the remaining tickets with Half Hitch. He made the comment that their IPA's in Denver aren't nearly as smooth as our NW style IPA's. And these Mosaic Hops are now my favorite, including my wife who doesn't like IPA's. Outstanding Crux!

Enjoyed a couple of .3 liter servings at the brewpub yesterday for $6.00.

Beer was served gold orange with a nice white head.

Nose was so fresh and excellent. Tropical and citrus was so fresh and forward!

Taste was very well balanced between the pale and caramel malt bill and the tropical and citrus goodness of the hops used. Alcohol is well hidden. This brew is so dangerously drinkable!

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and very smooth.

Overall an outstanding beer that is worthy of chasing down. Purchased a 500 ml bottle that I will follow up with another review!

Gave a sip to my roommate who mainly drinks Heineken and the occasional Chimay and his only response was "Wow." Very hop forward, I would call it dank but it's kind of just does its own thing. Mosaic quickly turning into a favorite hop variety.

Bought a 500ml bomber at John's Market for $5.99. 500ml is a 'cheater' downsizing....so boo to that . Bottled on June 8/16 --- quite visible and easy to see....so kudos for that.

Bottle says 9.5%abv....Crux website says 10.0%.
Get the math solved, lads.

In the past, any 9+ % DIPA has left me flavor-disappointed. The hop nuance gets lost to the booze.

Pours dk golden. Modest creamy head, excellent lacing.
Complex and interesting taste, an enjoyable quaff, and little predictability in the aftertastes. The impression I have is definitely less of a hop-dominated beer, and more of a malt-dominated one. I'm not sure if htis is the simple result of using solely Mosaic hops, or is it the malt in the recipe?

This is a good beer. Well-disguised booziness, Leaves the tongue a little malt-syrupy & sticky, and a little dry but not really 'dried out'. Session at your peril.

Very well executed beer recipe (questions...Mosaic, or the malt(s)?),
But a beer I can only afford occasionally.
So my 'Overall' incorporates affordability, given what I paid.

just too sweet for me. i hate the high-abv/super sweet brews. i've had others from this brewery- they were good. but this one just doesn't deliver for me.

500 ml bottle. Pours clean orange copper with thin white hard that recedes to a ring of bubbles, soapy lace. Sweet tropical fruity aroma, mango. This brew is delish, incredibly balanced between sweet and hoppy. Grapefruit, peppery earthy hops stand out, and the sweet malt backbone stays throughout. Surprisingly easily drinkable for an almost 10% abv. Medium soft oily mouthfeel, glides down. Love the balance and softness of this imperial.

L-Pours a gorgeous copper-amber color with a 1 1/2 finger, bone white head into a Deschutes tulip glass. Ironic, this. Decent retention with good lacing. Beautiful appearance.

S-Wonderfully fragrant. The aroma is almost intoxicating. I should have bought a full growler. If this is brewed solely with Mosaic, then the brewers (Hi Larry) at Crux Fermentation are magicians. Tropical fruit like mango with citrus and pine notes. Some nectarine. This is awesome.

T-God, I love this beer. Very well balanced, yet complex. Hops are aggressive without overpowering the taste buds since it is balanced by a delicate malt sweetness that is absolutely delicious. A real treat. No bitter after taste and alcohol content is deceptively non-evident for its 10% ABV. Extremely well constructed. Best tasting imperial IPA above 8% (Hi Vinnie) I have ever had, and the best new beer (to me) in years. Palate follows the nose with this one. This is fabulous.

F-Very smooth and extremely well balanced. Carbonation is perfect.

O-Dangerously smooth given ABV. Tastes great cold and as it warms. Only criticism is its scarcity. Well done Crux!

Bottle bought in southern CA.
Deep Amber appearance. Amazingly fresh aroma and taste. Mosaic is complex in its sweet start and bitter finish. The taste is new to me, but grows more appealing. The carbonation is good and the mouthfeel is a little heavy helped by the malt. The alcohol is hidden.

A beautiful pour, nice bubbles form all around this mouth-watering IPA. Smells like big, juicy hops... And the taste follows through on this promise. An excellent IPA that won't "hammer you down" with hops, but rather, blend them finely into an excellent brew.

Reasonable head that leaves a lattice of lace on the brandy snifter. Light haze with a dirty gold color.

Prickly, cactus-like nose. I detect some very light fruit but this is all biting, weedy, green, raw hop otherwise.

Surprisingly malty start given the smell--sweet. Some alcohol on the tongue, which shows up as warmth in the swallow. The hop shows up in the swallow but, again, not nearly as harsh as the smell might have you believe. The finish, while bitter, is still well balanced. The aftertaste is literally bittersweet. The body leans full and the effervescence low. In short, a wonderfully complex beer.

Bottle. Rather high clarity. I had another IPA earlier from Crux and I get the same stinky-sweetness in the nose. Its odd and slightly akin to rotty fruit. Mosaic hops are evident. Dankness. Candied sweetness. Flavor is sweet hoppiness. Sweetened hops is the best way to describe it. Sugary fruits. Hints of booze and hollers of bitterness. Alcohol is evident. Not worth the price of admission.

Bought a bottle at the Beer Shop in East Longmeadow, MA. This beer poured with a clear golden appearance with pretty much no head and very thin lacing on the sides. Aromas pack a wallop with highly spiced hops mixed with heavy citrus aromas, particularly orange and mango. Taste follows the nose with a very clean and fruity drink; definitely could taste rich grapefruit. Very light body, but not too watered down. Really helps the drink maintain a sweetness and slight refreshing feeling. Overall, I really enjoyed the aromas from this drink and how its mouthfeel complimented the taste.

Look: Golden in color; slight amount of haziness - largely transparent. Pours with 1 finger or less of bright white foam the dies down leaving a rim of white foam on the surface along the sides of the glass and a few flecks of lacing. A few small bubble present from the carbonation. Better than a good commercial beer but not as good as top shelf craft beers.

Smell: Grapefruit, mango, lemon, mild grass and mild hops. Enticing; made me want to take a drink.

Taste: Mild pine start; progressing to a delicious fruity flavor combination of grapefruit, mango and mild lemon; ending a mild hoppy flavor. Very, very refreshing.

Feel: Medium body; mild fizzy sensation from the carbonation; slight syrupy feel. No dry finish. Very nice.

Overall: Delicious, refreshing Imperial IPA. Unique fruity flavor with just enough hops. I could drink this one over and over.

Fresh bottle dated 12/2/2015. Even with vigorous pour into a tall tulip glass, barely a trace of head, very little foam. Tiny bit of carbonation, one or two weak threads of tiny bubbles. The strongest floral and citrus aromas I have ever gotten from a beer, very nice and noticeable from a good distance. Color is a pretty, slightly hazy, sunset orange. The taste is primarily citrus and resiny, quite good. Easy to drink, clean taste and not too bitter, alcohol is not very noticeable which is surprising given the 10% ABV. Overall, a very good beer.

Pours perfectly clear and golden, almost no head. Aroma is very subdued other than booze and maybe some floral notes. Taste is nothing like the smell, tropical fruit up front balanced by sweetness and bready malt character, finishes citrusy on the exhale, minimally bitter, doesnt taste at all boozy for an imperial. Mouthfeel is great, very smooth, medium-light to medium body. Not dry, but the taste escapes the tongue quickly and leaves me wanting that next sip. Really excellent beer

375 ML poured into a chalice because that's the only glassware I have in my hotel room.

Golden body with a copper tinge to it. Excellent clarity. Light head and lace. Only trickles of carbonation. 5

Ridiculously delicious aroma. A bit funky and bursting with pineapple, mango, and passionfruit. Juicy and kind of fuzzy in smell, not sure how, but it is. 4.5

A little less lovely than the nose, but it still has an abundance of juicy tropical fruit. Light orange and unripened mango with some floral and earthy flourishes. Some honeydew and cantaloupe notes appear in their rawer forms here too. 4.5

Surprisingly light-feeling and easy-to-drink. I wouldn't guess this was a DIPA. Bitterness is high and assertive but balanced by light sweetness, earthiness, and a bit of colorful yeastiness towards the finish. 4.25

This was great. Another delicious Mosaic gem.

From month old bottle. Right away noticed huge difference from draft. Tropical fruits faded and more of an earthy muddy quality is their. Draft tasted of pineapple bottle had a slight scallion taste. My confusion of the two doesn't stop me from enjoying this.

Balanced, slightly sweeter mango flavor, not malty at all. Floral hints too. A bit of creaminess in the mouthfeel almost to a fault. This is not an IPA that hits you in the face. More like one that gives you a gentle back massage but then creepily moves to your butt without your permission. Definitely a good beer to add to the lineup of various IPAs out there but not sure when I'd choose this again.

Bottled. Golden and clear. Ok head. Hop smell is as described but light. Balanced bitter to malt. Very smooth on tongue. Balanced front to back hiding the punch. Very nice brew but would prefer a little more hop presence on the nose.

Aroma: Popped the bottle and it immediately smelled of citrus fruits. Strong floral aromas, some tropical citrus aromas. Basically all hop with a clean(ish) malt aroma.

Appearance: Burnt orange color, rocky white head, and bright clarity. Some apparent carbonation, but mostly still. Good lacing.

Flavor: A lot of grapefruit up front w/ some mango, peach, and lemon. Some herbal/floral undertones. Subtle toasted malts. Finish is a lingering bitterness with a resinous quality.

Mouthfeel: Low alcohol/solvent feeling, medium bodied, high carbonation, dry finish.

Overall: Very complex hop character, and less malt flavor than in most DIPA's that I've had, but wonderfully balanced. Very, very good. Get it.

Poured from bottle into a tulip.

Aroma: passion fruit mixed with freshly-cut grass.

Appearance: golden bright with a slight bit of haze. The head is snow white that fades very quickly to a thin veil with lacing only at the edge of the glass. Very little head given the amount of hops.

Flavor: orange initially that almost immediately transitions to the hops. Very enjoyable. Hops are certainly present but not overwhelmingly so. The hops fade quickly in the finish giving way to sweet bready malt. No hint whatsoever of the alcohol. At 9.5% ABV, this beer is remarkably smooth. No off flavors.

Mouthfeel: mouthfeel is thin for a DIPA. This beer's body is more in line with a standard IPA.

Overall: balance is the word. This is hoppy - duh - as a DIPA should be, but this is not a hop bomb. Other flavors shine through. This is an excellent beer, but somewhat an outlier given what you'd expect from a typical DIPA. This seems like a standard IPA, but a DIPA...?! It is so well balanced, thin-bodied, and the alcohol so well hidden....

Distinct bottle label information: BOTTLED ON 06/15/2015

Pale gold body; lots of gently rising carbonation bubbles; thick, persistent, dense head. Very faint aroma of citrus and some pine notes; very subdued malt grain notes. Toasty, honey-like flavor; immediate and lasting hop bitterness. Medium bodied mouthfeel; warm; soft; mostly dry finish.

Wow! An exceptionally well-balanced, complex IIPA. I don't get the lack of distinctive aroma, but, man, oh, man, what a fantastic taste and deep, rich, satisfying mouthfeel! There is a warm, crisp, honey-like taste and feel to things yet it's all subtle and deftly wrapped together. Subtlety with a punch! I don't use exclamation marks much, and I don't rate this an overall "5", yet there is no denying that this is one world-class India pale ale. What's really nice is that there is no overt perception of the high ABV present. It's all about the balance and complexity of the malt bill and utilized hops. Perhaps my sniffer is off this evening, thus the relatively low score on smell, but otherwise a very remarkable beer...
