Notes / Commercial Description:
Imperial Mosaic IPA

Hops climb up twine that’s just loosely tied to the trellis with a half hitch knot—and this Imperial IPA is just loosely tied to tradition. The Mosaic hop imparts surprisingly floral aromas instead of the more expected grapefruit-y notes. On the palate, complex layers of flavors might remind you of guava, mango, stone fruit and lemon, unraveling your idea of what an Imperial IPA should be.

Great fruity imperial IPA. Complex, delicious, and little evidence of high ABV. The malt backbone of this brew meshes perfectly with the floral hoppiness. Crux knocked it out with this offering. Price a bit up there.... but as a 'luxury' item, who cares? Crux continues to produce nothing but the good stuff.

From a 375 ml bottle (bottled June 5, 2015) into a tulip. Reviewed from notes dated August 6, 2015.

A-The beer is mostly clear and orange-golden colored. A one-finger-tall head of white foam has good retention and leaves a nice coating of lacing on the glass. I can see a bit of carbonation keeping the head alive.

S-The aroma is quite tropical with suggestions of mango, peach, and mandarin orange. Malts are pretty light and on the sweet side of things with honey notes creeping in.

T-The taste is more of the same: lots of juicy tropical fruit and citrus flavors that trend towards sweet instead of outright bitter or pithy. There is a mild hit of bitterness on the finish that suggest pine and grapefruit. Alcohol is well hidden here.

M-The body is medium to full in heft with a bit of stickiness and coating feel. Carbonation is average.

O-A nice juicy example of an IIPA and good first beer from Crux for me. If you like your hops on the tropical side of things, look no further. Maybe not the most complex beer around, but I would drink more of this if it weren't so expensive.

L: Pours hazy gold capped by a 1” clingy white to cream colored foam collar that quickly recedes to a thick film.
S: Herbal, grassy, minty hops with citrus, light grains and some floral notes.
T: A yeast driven palate starts with fruit, melon, stone fruit, some mustiness, tropical fruit, light biscuit, with a moderate bitter melon hop finish. Tropical fruit character grows towards the finish and as the beer warms.
F: Has a wild yeast character and texture. Exceptionally creamy, airy, soft palate and medium light body.
O: A big, flavorful, complex beer with an exceptional texture and an excellent job on the hops.

Pours with minimal head, attractive orange color. Bright, tropical fruit and sweet malt backbone dominate taste. Hides its 10% extremely well, and is somewhat lighter bodied than you'd expect.

375ml bottle, bottled 5/4/15, poured into a tulip

A- pours a bright clear golden orange color with a one-finger creamy white head that retains long after the pour, leaving a bit of lacing behind

S- a big bouquet of juicy tropical hops gives aromas of guava & stone fruit, with some slightly sweet floral notes following. Just a hint of alcohol and bready mat

T- juicy tropical hops follow the aroma with flavors of mango, guava, pineapple & pineapple bursting out of the glass, followed by some slightly sweet floral hop. Slightly bready underlying malt compliments the hops before finishing clean, allowing the tropical notes to carry through to the linger

M- medium body with moderate-low carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel and slightly warming, creamy finish

O- juicy hoppy goodness, that isn't overly bitter, and very easy drinking for 10%ABV, very impressed

Pours a rich golden hue with a fluffy white head. The nose is delicious but mild. Peach, lemon, pineapple, cantelop, papaya. It tastes better than it smells. The flavor is terrific. It really let's the tropical mosaic hops shine. There is a nice malt background present too. The alcohol is hide very well. This could be a dangerous beer. Cheers.

I had this beer on-tap in a tulip at the brewery.

Appearance: clear orange hue with a thin layer of white foam and a very attractive lace left on the glass. I like it a lot.

Smell: sweet with a nice grassy hop character. Not overly complex, but nice.

Taste: sweet, rich and malty with a nicely citrusy and grassy flavor. Kind of sweet even for a DIPA, but tasty nonetheless.

Mouthfeel: medium rich body with a good carbonation and damn fine creaminess. Yummy.

Overall: a good DIPA, but not super quaffable. Good, but not great.

Bottled on 5/19/15. 9.5% ABV per the label.

Pours a murky honey orange with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, tropical fruit, and tropical fruit juice aromas. Taste is much the same with sweet citrus zest, grapefruit juice, and tropical fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with great citrus and tropical hop qualities, but it is extremely sweet and the mild bitterness doesn't balance it out too well.

Serving type: bottle.

This is REALLY an imperial IPA. Hot and sexy, like a 1930s starlet dosed with perfume and lounging in a fur-trimmed negligee. Maybe I'm fantasizing, but this is one lush and lovely big hoppy brew.

Golden color with plenty of white foam. Fruity, but on the lemony side, with papaya, passion fruit. The label mentions guava, which is also right on as guava lingers in the aftertaste. It's a new flavor in my vocabulary, but Mosaic is the Boss Man hop. A little bit hot, but the alcohol is more of a force of nature than a flavor.

This is not very bitter at all. It's just total hop delirium. From the 375 ml bottle purchased at New Seasons Market in Portland. A rather pricey six bucks, but then you'd spend it to have that luscious lady, so what the hell. Make yourself happy and get a bottle.

Crisp pure golden body with plenty of chill haze. Roughly a finger or so of white head which disapparates into a classic ring around the rosies and pack a patch of bubbles in the corner. Great lacing. Warming clears the haze and leaves it that clear light gold.

First whiff of the nose is disappointingly grainy. There's some bubblegum and pepper spice. There's some theme tying i t together as well that I can't quite place my finger on. The label lists floral notes as the primary aroma, but I don't pick up much in that arena. My take is much... pulpier? Rounder?

Flavour starts off on the same notes: round mulchy to begin, some of the sweeter fruits come in after that. Now the promise of the label comes through: waves of guava mango and stone fruit and a peppery finish.
Decent body, appropriate carbonation. Solidly enjoyable, but tough to pin down. I like the formula this site uses to calculate overall score. This one however I feel is slightly better than the composite score suggests, but I really can't bring myself to adjust any of the component scores. Take that as you will!!

Bottled on 3/23/15.
Poured a nice clear golden copper color with a half inch white head that quickly receded to a thin film that left some nice lacing.
The aroma on this beer was huge! Tropical fruits and a slight hint of grapefruit were noticeable right away, with some subtle wild onion smells and flowers in the background.
The flavor was outstanding, with tropical fruit favors very dominant. There was a slight sweetness and some sweet spiciness, like a spice cake flavor as well.
The mouthfeel was medium bodied with a very clean finish.
Overall, this was an outstanding IIPA, I've not had anything from Crux before, but if this is an indication of the quality of their offerings, I'll definitely be buying more in the future.

375ml bottle $6.99. Bright yelllow-orange, clear, lost of slowly rising bubbles and a very sticky head that lingers pretty nicely. Aroma is a lot of fruity hops, tropical, surprising. Flavor is lemon, tropical fruit, touch of alcohol. Overall a pretty tasty double IPA, not sure I'd revisit given the price point but this one bottle was nice.

man this is pretty good! have not seen these guys in colorado until today, glad i picked this bottle up in boulder. its all mosaic here, and its got that juicy lemon pineapple thing that i often pick up when this hop is used in sours. its preserved, or maybe just super fresh, and i like it a whole lot. i should have chilled it a little longer, my bad, but the anticipation was killing me. its super clear in the glass, light and clean, lightly toasted golden color, with a tall white head, looks lovely, super super clean and crystal clear. nose of fresh blooming mosaic, hints of pine and straw, and a very mild grain bill, probably some dextrose or something in here, as there isnt much cereal aroma or flavor, and the body is so light it cant be all that grain heavy. carbonation may be a touch light, but the beer still feels fluffy, and that mosaic bouquet is really ripe. fruity and tropical and all the beers that try to showcase this and fail should take note of this one. amazing how well hidden the abv is, just a touch of warmth in the slightly sweet finish, but all aspects of the hops are there, even that faint mouthwatering tartness, especially in the nose. im not sure ill drop 18 bucks or whatever they are asking for the other bottle thats now in the market, but this was well worth it, really tasty take on a big ipa, great use of mosaic. these guys are on my radar with just one beer.

Fucking delicious. This beer comes strait out the bottle with some 'tude. Mosaic hops bounce off the walls and strait into one's awaiting shnoz. Passionfruit, mango, melon, and a touch of balancing cattiness. The mosaic hop dominates this brew in the most loving way, like an older sister before you outgrow her. But, much like the sister, the hops are nothing without a solid base. Your hips will never wield the same pinning-power. The malt back bone in this beer delivers a smooth, sweet, caramely horse for those hops to ride in on, and finishes with a slight crystal bite that helps to clear the tongue of the otherwise lingering mosaic bouquet. This beer rocked my socks off, and made my spine tingle.

Poured medium-dark amber, beautiful and persistent off-white head, readied my tongue and belly for some mondo bitchin drinking. Highy recommended for homebrewers who like to play with hops.

12.7oz bottle dated 03/02/15 tasted on 04/20/15

A – Pours a bright and hazy orange, cloudy appearance with a bright white head. Lacing left behind is sticky and patchy.

S – Peach, tangerine, lemon, orange, pineapple, bright.

T – Mango, peach, guava, fruit nectars, sweet.

M – Medium in body, nicely done, lingering finish.

O – A unique and excellent representation of the style, really a great example of the mosaic hop variety.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a nice head; the retention is good and there are multiple lacing strands that hang around

Smell: Tropical fruit tones, with papaya, lychee and guava; sugary malt tones underneath

Taste: Shortbread malt flavors build initially, with the tropical fruit tones from the aroma developing; the bitterness builds, after the swallow, but it doesn't get near what I would have expected for 80 IBUs; the shortbread returns in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Decent IPA, not the best but pleasant enough

Pours two fingers of head on a hazy straw body.
The aroma is lots of bright fruits: mango, pineapple, lemon, orange and a little dankness.
The taste has a malty start then turns to moderate bitterness and finishes a little spicy. Great profile.
The texture is soft and a little fizz.
Great aroma and taste. A super winner.

375 ml single (muled by my sister from Seattle) poured into a Goose Island tulip

A: big thick 3 finger head, hazy deep peach with a hint of red but light at the edges
S: papaya, passion fruit (but fairly clean and not super juicy), tropical flowery notes.
T & M: follows the nose and still quite clean, though more juicy and more bitterness and some resin. The lingering back end balances flowery notes with the juicy bitterness, but it isn't quite as clean at the end as it is up to that point. Excellent integration of flavors. Hides the alcohol quite well, though the depth of flavor and substantial body suggest that this isn't to be taken lightly. Dries out at the end. Moderate carbonation.

Great beer! If I had easy access to this one, I'd drink it often.

375ml bottle poured into a tulip. Bottled on date has rubbed off the label.

Pours slightly cloudy with a smallish head and very slow carbonation. Head lasts a very long time. Golden. Smell is gorgeous. Lush, floral and fruity. Orangey Reminds me of Fantasy Factory.

Taste is heavy resin, bitter, but backed with a just barely sufficient honeysuckle and citrus sweetness.

Mouthfeel is dry and airy, very nice. Overall, very good beer.

Soft fluffy white head. Clear light amber body that looks pure and juicy. The smell is out of this world. Immediately out of the bottle, this beer smelled cleaner than Nelson and more pure than PtE. Uneven tropical fruit with a stale and sweet aroma, definitely much more sweet than stale. Tangerine and melon. Afterwards...not as good. This beer has a nice grapefruit and tropical fruit taste that is very well balanced. No alcohol detected. The feel is there but somewhat flat and soft.

Overall - This has a great deal of potential. A tweak or two would bring it up there with Nelson or PtE. The Mosaic Hops are awesome. This beer on tap would be devastating to your palate. I think this is a great beer that could go places.

So far, the very best beer of 2015! =)

Appearance. Pours a nice hazy gold with a touch of orange and a finger of thick and sticky looking white head.

Smell. Those mosaic hops. Jammy tropical fruits, yellow grapefruit and a bit of cedar. There's a touch of green onion coming through as well but not super offputting. A touch of sweet light malt as well.

Taste. Big tropical and citrus fruits, that mosaic hop flavour. Some sweet light malts, very little bitterness in the finish considering the big hop flavours but then again, mosaic. It is a little bitter in the dryish finish.

Mouthfeel. Medium-full body, low+ and very smooth arbonation.

Overall. Great stuff. I would gladly drink another one.
