“von Steuben’s Gose” is our interpretation of a traditional German Gose. A beer most commonly associated with the city of Leipzig in Germany, ours too is brewed with coriander and salt, which gives it a slightly sour finish. For a beer that we first introduced at the end of summer, it’s a perfect way to get through the dog days of August – refreshing, light, and extremely drinkable. As for the name? Well, German-born Major General Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben was a key part of the Continental Army’s victory in the War of Independence. It also just so happens that he spent some time in Newburgh. This is our first “philanthropic beer”, with a portion of the proceeds from each pint sale being donated back to historic Washington’s Headquarters right here in Newburgh. Prost!

A smoked gose is the kind of idea that sounds dumb at first, just because you never heard of one before, but then after you think about it for a few seconds you realize that, yeah, that actually probably should work.

Newburgh's works.

Pours very pale and hazy. Smells very light, appropriate for the style, a lemony tartness subdued by smoke. Tastes like it smells: not so much of a combination of meaty and sour nodes but a sour base smoothed out wonderfully by the addition of smoke.

From 02/27/13 notes. Had this on tap at Pony Bar on the UES in NYC. Served in a pint glass.

a - Pours a hazy, murky pale yellow color with one inch of bright white head and low carbonation evident. Looks ok.

s - Smells of citrus, bananas, sour fruits, cloves, spice, earthy notes, and some bready malts. Pretty nice, I like the citrus and slightly sour notes quite a bit.

t - Tastes of sour fruity malts, citrus, lemon zest, some major salt, yeast, spices, cloves, floral hops, earthy notes, biscuit malts, and wheat. Wow, great taste here. Little more sour fruits and citrus than the nose, and the salt is there and very nice.

m - Medium body and low to moderate carbonation. Body is super smooth and creamy and very easy to drink. Awesome mouthfeel...I think the salt smooths it down a bit somehow.

o - Overall I loved this one; never had anything from Newburgh before but this is one of the better goses I've had in a long time. Nose is pretty nice with some light sour fruit and citrus, and the taste has a little more of those mixing with salt, but in a really nice way. Super easy to drink and the salt is up front but doesn't take over; I thought this was a great beer. Would like to have it again for sure and look forward to trying more of their beers.
