A: Black as hell. Mocha-colored head with fine lacing.

S: Sour lactose, sweet chocolate, and caramel. A hint of roasted notes lie beneath it all. Very sweet.

T: The lactose is upfront and a bit souring. Never liked milk stouts for that reason. The chocolate comes through with thick roast. The alcohol isn't too abrasive for being 10%.

M: Creamy, just how a milk stout should be. No real noticable carbonation.

O: Milk stouts have never been my favorite due to the souring lactose. This one is quite sweet, but it's not too bad. One of the better milk stouts I've tried. Check it out.

Appearance: Just about black as night with a dark mocha head; decent lacing

Smell: Cocoa and roast, with undertones of lactose and a hint of smoke

Taste: Sweetened milk chocolate, up front, with the roasted tones taking over in the middle; hints of black licorice, soy sauce, macadamia nuts and vanilla combine to provide a balanced finish to what otherwise might be a very sweet beer; a touch ashy in the aftertaste but the chocolate really lingers

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation

Overall: Pretty decent milk stout but not something to drink in quantity as it becomes a chocolate overdose after a while

22 oz bottle poured into a snifter.
10% ABV, Bottled on 07/29/13

A - Thick inky black, Smoglifter pours quietly, rousing a thick mocha head that dots the snifter in specks of lace but, I'll be forthcoming; I bought this bottle because of the incredible label artwork!

S - Billowing roasted malt wafts from the nose rich with the presence of dusty cocoa, bitter baker's chocolate, and a heavy dose of lactose sugar stirred into iced black coffee grasped at by notes of cardboard oxidation.

T - Lactose sweetness can barely be discovered, buried in the heap of heavily roasted malts and cocoa which cast a shroud of bitter, bottom-of-the-pot coffee and baker's chocolate over the tongue. Notes of smoky northwoods-made maple syrup and blackstrap molasses bring in the finish for an assertive, dark flavor.

M - Thick and throat-coating, Smoglifter has a rich body and creamy feel due, in part, to the lactose sweetness that struggles to cut the strong, acrid bitterness imparted from the heavily roasted malts.

O - Brash's Smoglifer drew me in with it's incredible label that features a crypic-yet-cartoonish comic book-style illustration that suits the beer quite well. Pouring inky black and foreboding, this chocolate-rich aromatic beer is enticing but it's robust bitter malt flavor leans a little too bitter and harsh-finishing for my taste. I enjoy the complexities of Smoglifter's combination of styles, if you will, but in the end, there's a fine line I teeter on and the lack of sweetness throws me off from really getting into this beer.

Pours a thick, deep brown, almost black.

Nose is strongly of cocoa.

Starts with strong chocolate flavors. It's a bit bitter on the tongue but it finishes smooth and sweet, more typical of milk stouts.

It's definitely a heavier beer and almost feels like drinking a meal.

I was surprised to see the alcohol content as it's masked quite well by the chocolate notes.

Overall, it's one of the better chocolate stouts I've had and I would highly recommend it. I'm not usually big on chocolate stouts but this was quite good.

Served in a glass, poured from the bottle.

Pitch black body with a cream tan head, 10% heavy hitting imperial chocolate milk stout. Off the bat the head doesn't stick around very long speckled lacing follows suit. Aromatics, deep dark chocolate, notes of soy sauce, creamy lactose notes, and again big dark chocolate additions the gangs all here folks. As it warms up I'm getting dark fruit notes within the chocolate/milk chocolate notes. Flavor coats the palate with dark chocolate syrup, cream textures of lactic yogurt notes, earthy nutty notes from the cocoa additions...a really great beer as a whole. It gets a bit cloying sweet be sure to share with fellow beergeeks four to eight ounces is enough for me, 22 ounces is unbearable. Mouthfeel mellows out a bit just a touch of booze notes going on, with full bodied malts. Even flowing carbonation going on down through each sip. Overall, it's a nice beer big chocolate malts enough sweetness to induce diabetes disperse this amongst friends.

Super strong stout with some amazing flavors. Looked great with a black as ink pour with a nice brown head. The smell was amazing with hints of heavy cream, dark chocolate, and espresso. The taste was full of malt with the chocolate and milk flavors coming near the end for a semi sweet finish. The beer was noticeably strong (drank at room temp) and very thick. Love this kind of super dark beer.
